  1. Real good way to "F" up a receiver. Remove the metal form the bolt guide or the edges of the guide channel on the receiver. The guide rib length on a commercial is shorter. Most often it is not a problem when using a milsurp bolt but there are always exceptions. It will be harder to remove material from the guide rib in a cosmetically pleasing way.

Tom, drop me a PM and we can discuss your project. I've done lots of 6.5x55's on Mauser actions, they go together like bread and butter.

    8mm Mauser Barrels

The Yugo Mausers tend to have very good barrels on them and are some of the best candidates to keep in 8x57 and sporterize. Here is one I did using the issue barrel: Sorry to all those who have already seen this one a million times, lol. But, it shows how well these rifles can shoot, even with open sights. And, it also shows how the issue barrel can be reworked to a more pleasing profile. 8mm barrels are not that hard to come by. If you are looking for pre-chambered barrels then they are as are people with the proper reamer. If however, you are willing to start from a blank then there are numerous makers.

Look at the 260 Rem to get an idea of what the 6.5x55 will do.

    Forend Keys

Know how some old Muzzle loaders had a wedge that held the barrel in the stock? Same thing. Think forend screw only sideways and without threads.

    K98 Action

I've gotten to where I seem to tighten the barrel, or is it the action, about the same each time. Estimating crush is practically a given now. There are many ways to skin a cat. Each cat skinner has his preferred method.

    Where To Begin

Fabrica de National arms (sp?) Mexico are not FN mausers. They are Mexican made. The Model 24 mexican is Belgian (FN) made. Only 10,000 of the entire Yugo rifles were FN made. Many of these were refurbed into m24/47's. But as Brenden says, lots of unscrupulous sellers out there. Buyer beware.

    K98 Action

I'd bet you can find 9.3x62 ammo for about the same as .35 Whelen which isn't too common itself. besides, what's wrong with you that you don't reload?

Ah, hindsight. Since you already have a .30-06 the .270 seems somewhat redundant although it is a nice cartridge.. The .300 WM is a step up but depending on what you hunt may not offer much over the '06 except for recoil. I'd be tempted to build either a .338-06, .338 WM or 9.3x62. Bear in mind that the magnums conversions will run you more since there are feeding & bolt face issues to contend with.
  11. NECG front sight that I customized. Here's the rear sight: Some of you may remember this from long ago: The engraving came with the action. It is a style I will learn to do eventually. I used the original stock to make this pattern from. When I modified the pattern the wood in the original pattern was too nice to not use.
  12. Judging by the markings left on the receiver it started life as a G-98. Then it was customized intrawar and given commercial proofs.
  13. Clemson, the 257 is done, it just needs a stock. Too bad wood is so expensive, at least the kind I like, lol. Perhaps more importantly, wood just takes forever. Maybe I should mix some Viagra into the finish?
  14. Here's a quick pic or two of a 9.3x62 I'm working on. Stock was just inletted today. Since the pic, I have finished the schnabel, and it looks good if I do say so myself. Here's the action.
  15. Dude, Sorry to hear but I'm sure you will do fine. We'll say a prayer and you listen to LC. We'll all be pullin for you and wish you a speedy recovery!
  16. That's whatthe owner wants to know too, lol. I am working on the pattern stock. That's all that really remains. Only the owner is trying to convince me to install irons on it after he refused my early attempts to install them. My concern is that they'll look like an after thought now, which is exactly what they'd be.

Yeah, I'm glad you chimed in, I did want to be misunderstood. I meant it is a good working stock of good design. I really like the dark wood. With that long barrel it will get some good velocity and not be far behind the 9.3x64. the 9.3x62 is one of my favorite cartridges. It and the .338-06.

Schweeet! Have you shot the 9.3x62 yet? That's a no-nonsense stock on the 9.3, gonna get it checkered? I like your blog!
  19. I didn't say it couldn't be done.
  20. Roy, 3.340" is only the cartridge oal. You cannot load a cartridge to 3.340" and have it fit the magazine. You need some clearance. Most every commercial '06 uses a magazine of 3.400". Anyway, yes, the M48 can be made into an '06. Heck, many factory rounds will fit with no mods. But, just try to fit a round of milsurp 150 grain FMJ into a magazine of 3.340". Handloaders that like to seat bullets out and those that may want to use ALL types of factory ammo cannot do so without extensive mods. Is it rocket science? No. But it ain't plug and play either. I say extensive because most folks want to screw on a barrel and go. Anything more and they are befuddled. To open the magazine to teh proper 3.400" length takes it out of the realm of easy and into avanced. That extra .060" is a lot. Here is what can happen if you get too thin on teh box: If you are willing to limit yourself with regards to OAL then proceed. Many peole only want a ralatively short 150 grain bullet anyway. But why limit yourself? Heck, the .308 is a much easier conversion AND you will have an overly long magazine that will allow you to take FULL advantage of the cartridge's fll potential.
  21. Here are pics of that Vapen Falun conversion to 8x54 K. The story, as I understand it is that the firm of Vapen Falun would convert your standard Swede 96 to a sporter. Of particular interest to me is that the rifle is all matching. What I particularly like is the way they cleverly converted the military stock. Look at how carefully the pistol grip was added. One day I'll refinish the stock (when I take the time to learn to checker, maybe 2020?). Shown is a 6.5x55 round and an 8x54 K. It is simply a 6.5x55 necked up to 8mm. teh original 6.6 barrel was bored out to 8mm. Really a neat conversion. And a great deal for teh $125 I think I paid. The rear sight was missing the folding leaf so I made a replacement. I'll have to get in some range time to adjust it to the correct height. If I ever get around to redoing the stock, I'll probably blue it too. For now, it's just gonna be for fun. Closeup of the pistol grip conversion: Rear Sight:
  22. I had a blade for one of those, just can't seem to find it, sorry. If I come accross it I'll let you know. I got mine on Ebay. here's some that might work: http://www.e-gunparts.com/DisplayAd.asp?ch...perSKU=&MC= http://www.e-gunparts.com/DisplayAd.asp?ch...perSKU=&MC=
  23. Mine has a dovetail. I might have one of the pinned sight blades. Any idea what the width of the slot is?
  24. I actually made it to the range a few weeks ago and was very happy with the results. Some cheap hotshot ammo was all I could get, I left my expensive Norma ammo sitting on my desk. Even so, it shot about 1.5" at 100 yds. That leads me to believe that with some careful handloads I can do better. realistically, 1" is about as good as I can shoot. I liked the very low level of recoil, even with the 140 grain loads. The stock on this isn't super. One day I'd like to refinish and recut the checkering. But, I had it on hand, it cost me nothing, and it works well with the sight.
  25. Happy Birthday pard! Hope you didn't mow after all.
