  1. has not set their status

  2. Here are pictures of the rifle, it's Belgium blued and ready for rings, and scope.
  3. Gun is Belgian blued, and aside from jeweling the bolt is done. Now I just need rings and a scope, and it's ready to hunt. I should have some pictures this weekend.
  4. Not much free time to take pictures the last week, but I did get the bolt knob extension welded on and forged over cleaned up and polished. polished barreled action and fit the barrel band sling swivel. Sanded the stock and put finish on it, may have a few more cotes to put on yet. Inleted bolt handle into stock, I did get my two position safety back from Don Markey and what a nice piece it is. Now all I need is a pair of Talley Q.R rings and a scope that will hold up to the .416 Taylor and I can go hunting. Sights will have to wait as money is tight right now. Hopefully this weekend I can Belgium blue it.
  5. Hmm sounds odd, I've done two 35 Whelen Ackley Improved's with no work to action or magazine. One a Springfield 03-a3, and one a 98 Mauser. Do you know if you have the correct follower in the mag? I assume you are working with a 98 Mauser? if so make sure you have a 98 follower in it and not a small ring follower. Just remember if you are going to modify a part, and are unsure about it, start with the least expensive part first. I would not think you need any feed rail work done to make this work.
  6. You might get a hold of 4d products, or White Rock Tool and Die. they rent them pretty cheep.
  7. What you are looking for is a 55 degree Whitworth thread die.
  8. The action puller is simple in theory, it's a piece of schedule 40 pipe that 1/4-1/3 has been milled off of it, a hole drilled in it and a round bar to fit the bolt raceway and a hole drilled and taped in it, a piece of all thread and a nut and washer. Put the round bar in the bolt way and the all thread in through the hole in the pipe slide the washer over the all thread and screw the nut down and turn till the action comes out. It's a lot easier than beating your barrels on the bench to try to break them loose. Now for the exact measurements I'd have to go out and measure it to be exact. On another note, I did chamber it this morning and go out and test fire it. It was nothing like I was expecting at all, recoil was more like a big push, like a 10 gauge shotgun. Granted I have the best pad money can buy on it and is 1 3/8" thick.
  9. After bedding has had time to dry, an action puller is always helpful.
  10. I got up early today and started glass bedding my barreled action here are some pictures. To aid in cleanup I tape off around the barreled action and trigger guard. Then I use modeling clay to fill and cover any holes or places I do not want the glass to get into. Once the majority of the glass bedding material that comes out, has been scraped off you can get rid of the tape and wait till it's time to let cure up nice and hard, usually with acura-glass I let set 5-6 hours and pull metal out.

    Bold Trigger

I would think it would fit, but you might call and ask before you order one. I've used several Bold triggers on projects, both for myself and for others and they all worked out well. My latest project I ordered a Timmney only because a friend of mine sent one back that be bought on a used rifle that was broken and they replaced it free of charge. That and their new triggers, at least for the 98's have a wider trigger shoe. Right now my most favorite, and most accurate rifle wears a bold trigger, and I'm NOT going to change it.
  12. The bolt knob is to be welded on with a little more extension and then forged over to make it better looking. It will be scoped as well as sights are in the plans.
  13. Thanks This is a project I've wanted to do since I was in Trinidad, Co. some 20 years ago. Now it is coming together.
  14. Finally got time to take some progress pictures. The ebony forend tip is installed and mostly rough shaped, cross bolts installed, and grip cap gluing up ready to be shaped in the morning. Bolt face has been opened up for the magnum case head.

    Holiday

Both Sat, and Sun, worked on gun projects half day, and Mon. Went shooting from 7:30-11:00 and rested the rest of the day. All in all not a bad weekend. Just wish my parts order from Brownells would have shown up Fri, instead Tue, like the tracking info says it's supposed to.
  16. Yes the days of 50.00 to 100.00 dollor 89's are over for good I think. I'm just adding up what I've already spent on my 416 Taylor, and what I have left to buy and I'll have very close to 850.00 in it and I'm doing everything but the safety myself. Got to love sights on a barrel, with Talley QD rings and rear Peep, and banded front it adds up quick. I figure by the time I put a modest scope on it I'll be right at a grand and that's using a cheap laminate simi inlet stock. At this rate it'll be several years down the road before I can afford to restalk it with a nice piece of English, or Turkish walnut like I really want.
  17. I've been wanting to build a 416 Taylor for many years, and it is now in the works. I found a BRNO VZ 24 action on gun broker and started collecting parts. Here is a picture of what I started with, it was not as bad as the picture looked, and cleaned up well after bead blasting. Since then I've removed the charger hump, threaded the barrel and fit it to the action. This weekend I will start working on my bolt handle, I all but have it inletted in a stock. I don't have a mill so I had to sub out the side swing safety to Don Markey. More pictures to come this weekend.
  18. On a whim, I took a gun to the gun show to see if I could trade it off and get something different. The first few people who looked at it right off the bat were commenting how dirty the bore was, and were asking if it shot OK, so after about 30 minutes I left went home and brushed out the bore, gave it a good wiping down and went back. After returning several people wanted to buy it out right very quickly, and I told them I just got their and was wanting to trade it for something different, and needed to look around first. I ended up finding what I was looking for, and walked away with the new to me gun, 210.00, a new set of dies and a shell holder. Never again will I try to sell or trade a gun with out cleaning it first.
  19. All I can say is you will enjoy it, I know I love my 35 Whelen IMP. a lot. What do you have in mind for your next builds?
  20. I've never seen a Beagle climb a tree but that would open up more possibilities when they did.
  21. I have two beagles, one 10 months, and one 16 months old. Last night it snowed for the first time here this year, and I let my dogs out this morning and ten minutes later I thought one was hurt the youngest was yelping so bad. I looked out the window and they were running around the yard and looked like they were chasing each other and then I saw the rabbit. The youngest dog got the rabbit, I went out and got it from him and it is now in the refrigerator. I love my Beagles!
  22. Call any, or all of the powder company's, and bullet company's and ask for a lab tech. Explain what you are working with, cartridge, action type, barrel length and they should be able to help you out.I routinely call Hodgdon and Sierra from time to time and they are very helpful. I know Sierra keeps a log on the information they give you, and the next time you call, even about something totally different they may ask about your last call and how everything came out, for their information and they might put more research into it if they think their is enough interest in it.
  23. What was the deal? Did he take money and not deliver? I bought 3 mauser kits and they worked great and am very happy with them, maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones.
  24. Posted Yesterday, 06:21 PM i use aluminum bushing under a hydraulic jack That and some rosin.
  25. Clark: I usually shoot a 3 shot group for a hunting rifle. My light load I use Hornady 87grn. Sp's, and my heavy I use 120 grn. Hornadys, both loads using H-380. You might inspect your bedding, and may want to try a pressure point.
