  1. There is one main cause about the coming food shortages that NO one talking about; Government Policy. In 1959 the American Farmer could raise enough food and fiber to feed the world 4 times. There were approximately 4 Billion people on the planet at that time. Today there are 7 Billion people on the planet and the USA must import up to 38% of some of its food; what happened? Its called vertical integration and consolidation and influencing government policy by multi-international corporations. The best way to beat this is to raise a garden and grow as much of your own food as possible before they make it illegal or require you to have a license/permit. P.S. some cities already require a permit to have a garden and the Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois pushed through S.510 into law that may limit/regulate raising a garden under certain conditions. It seems that sharing your surplus and home canning will be a NO, NO under Durbin’s law once it is fully implemented.
  2. Mauser LR barrel die I have needed a Large Ring Mauser barrel die to clean up the threads on a Mauser barrel. I was going to buy one from Midway USA but they NO longer carry or offer a die. What they had was a hex shaped carbon die that sold in $30 range. I decide to look and see what Brownells has to offer and Holly cow they want $189 for a HSS 1.10-12 die Where can I buy a die for a large ring Mauser that’s reasonable? Hell I would think for $189 I could have someone like Regal make a die.
  3. I’m raising a garden again this year. I have so many food intolerances that I have to watch what I eat so raising my own is one of my few options. If you buy fertilizer make sure the type you buy is for a garden. Regular lawn fertilizer has waste products in it like heavy metals that will absorbed by the plants. I would also suggest you added a little sulfur to your garden since you have sand. Sulfur is considered the 4 nutrient behind Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium (potash). Then you need to add some magnesium and calcium. The old timers got around this because they burned wood and then dumped their ashes into the garden. Without knowing it they got everything they needed except extra nitrogen. Here’s some info that explains it better than I can Nutrient Concentration and Function in Plants Plants require 13 mineral nutrient elements for growth. The elements that are required or necessary for plants to complete their life cycle are called essential plant nutrients. Each of these nutrients has a critical function in plants and are required in varying amounts in plant tissue (Table 1). Macronutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and sulfur) are plant nutrients required in the largest amount in plants. Micronutrients (iron, copper, manganese, zinc, boron, molybdenum and chlorine) are required in relatively smaller amounts. Additional mineral nutrient elements which are beneficial to plants but not necessarily essential include sodium, cobalt, vanadium, nickel, selenium, aluminum and silicon. The nutrient elements differ in the form they are absorbed by the plant, by their functions in the plant, by their mobility in the plant and by the plant deficiency or toxicity symptoms characteristic of the nutrient. Nutrient Deficiency or Toxicity Nutrient deficiency or toxicity symptoms often differ among species and varieties of plants. A nutrient deficiency occurs when the nutrient is not in sufficient quantity to meet the needs of the growing plant. Nutrient toxicity occurs when a plant nutrient is in excess and decreases plant growth or quality. One way to understand the differences in nutrient deficiency symptoms among the plants is knowing the function and the relative mobility of the nutrient within the plant. Table 2 describes the general symptoms of nutrient deficiency and excess often observed for those nutrients. Some nutrients, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, chlorine and zinc, can be easily remobilized within the plant from old plant parts to actively growing plant parts such as young leaves. Other nutrients, such as sulfur, iron, copper, manganese, boron and calcium, are not easily remobilized within the plant. Therefore, the deficiency of the mobile elements usually initially occurs with older leaves while that of the immobile nutrients occurs with the young leaves or stem tips. Five types of deficiency or toxicity symptoms are observed: 1. Chlorosis - yellowing of plant tissue due to limitations on chlorophyll synthesis. This yellowing can be generalized over the entire plant, localized over entire leaves or isolated between some leaf veins (i.e. interveinal chlorosis). 2. Necrosis - death of plant tissue sometimes in spots. 3. Accumulation of anthocynanin resulting in a purple or reddish color. 4. Lack of new growth. 5. Stunting or reduced growth - new growth continues but it is stunted or reduced compared to normal plants. Nutrient deficiencies may not be apparent as striking symptoms such as chlorosis on the plant, especially when mild deficiency is occurring. However, significant reductions in crop yields can occur with such deficiencies. This situation is termed "hidden hunger" and can only be detected with plant tissue analysis or yield decline. However, experience with growing a specific plant species or variety can greatly help in distinguishing poor crop performance and possible nutrient deficiency symptoms from normal plant growth. Table 1. Essential plant nutrients: their relative amounts in plants, functions and classification Name Chemical symbol Relative % in plant* Function in plant Nutrient category Nitrogen N 100 Proteins, amino acids Primary macronutrients Phosphorus P 6 Nucleic acids, ATP Potassium K 25 Catalyst, ion transport Calcium Ca 12.5 Cell wall component Secondary macronutrients Magnesium Mg 8 Part of chlorophyll Sulfur S 3 Amino acids Iron Fe 0.2 Chlorophyll synthesis Micronutrients Copper Cu 0.01 Component of enzymes Manganese Mn 0.1 Activates enzymes Zinc Zn 0.03 Activates enzymes Boron B 0.2 Cell wall component Molybdenum Mo 0.0001 Involved in N fixation Chlorine Cl 0.3 Photosynthesis reactions *Relative amounts of mineral elements compared to nitrogen in dry shoot tissue. Generalized Symptoms of Plant Nutrient Deficiency or Excess Plant Nutrient Type Visual symptoms Nitrogen Deficiency Light green to yellow appearance of leaves, especially older leaves; stunted growth; poor fruit development. Excess Dark green foliage which may be susceptible to lodging, drought, disease and insect invasion. Fruit and seed crops may fail to yield. Phosphorus Deficiency Leaves may develop purple coloration; stunted plant growth and delay in plant development. Excess Excess phosphorus may cause micronutrient deficiencies, especially iron or zinc. Potassium Deficiency Older leaves turn yellow initially around margins and die; irregular fruit development. Excess Excess potassium may cause deficiencies in magnesium and possibly calcium. Calcium Deficiency Reduced growth or death of growing tips; blossom-end rot of tomato; poor fruit development and appearance. Excess Excess calcium may cause deficiency in either magnesium or potassium Magnesium Deficiency Initial yellowing of older leaves between leaf veins spreading to younger leaves; poor fruit development and production. Excess High concentration tolerated in plant; however, imbalance with calcium and potassium may reduce growth. Sulfur Deficiency Initial yellowing of young leaves spreading to whole plant; similar symptoms to nitrogen deficiency but occurs on new growth. Excess Excess of sulfur may cause premature dropping of leaves. Iron Deficiency Initial distinct yellow or white areas between veins of young leaves leading to spots of dead leaf tissue. Excess Possible bronzing of leaves with tiny brown spots. Manganese Deficiency Interveinal yellowing or mottling of young leaves. Excess Older leaves have brown spots surrounded by a chlorotic circle or zone. Zinc Deficiency Interveinal yellowing on young leaves; reduced leaf size. Excess Excess zinc may cause iron deficiency in some plants. Boron Deficiency Death of growing points and deformation of leaves with areas of discoloration. Excess Leaf tips become yellow followed by necrosis. Leaves get a scorched appearance and later fall off. 1. Adapted from: W.F. Bennett (editor), 1993. 4. I heard she was rapped by 200 men and that a small group of about 30 Egyptian women and a few soldiers freed her. I don’t know what the hell some people in this country are thinking anymore. We are bringing people in our country that will do the same thing here if they’re given the chance. My wife and sister is armed and I would like to see ALL of my nieces and sister in-laws armed. If it was up to me I would repeal ALL gun control laws back to the day after the Constitution was signed. As far as I’m concerned if you’re not in jail in a mental hospital or illegally in the country you should at least have access to a firearm for self-defense. I know that’s a lot for some to take but we need to restore the checks and balance in this country between the people the bad guys and our respective governments or we are going to see in the USA what we have been watching in Egypt and elsewhere. I would rather live with the risk of an estranged gun man than loose anymore of my freedom/rights or have my country turn into a cesspool
  5. From what I have read they did a number on her, Beaten, rapped, brutalized. The average American is ignorant of the world. Just imagine what’s going to happen when all hell breaks loose in the US and all of these third world turds we have brought into our country in the name of political correctness start their rapping hordes
  6. Found this interesting link to a story where a man buried a gun and ammo for 15 yrs without a problem. He said he used an oil to coat his guns but it sounded like Cosmoline to me and he nitrogen flushed his storage tube with nitrogen but I don’t know why oxygen absorbers won’t do the same job. Mylar bags are easy to find. You can buy them direct from a supplier like Sorbent Systems online now days with out going through a middleman. P.S. oxygen absorbers are also sold as chemical hand warmers http://www.backwoodshome.com/articles2/wood115.html
  7. Good point Don! I too have heard that those universal V wrenches can crack a receiver
  8. I have also heard of a product called Spot Check used to find cracks. I hate it when a guy loses a receiver
  9. Guys I’m not an FFL and certainly not an expert. I’m chiming in on this conversation because I don’t want anyone to get in to trouble. I thought long gun transfers through the mail had to go from FFL to FFL. I have heard of being able to mail yourself your own gun but I also know the post office people won’t allow it some cases because they don’t have a clue about the law. Personally I would have an FFL send it even if it’s not necessary to just to add an extra layer of protection to the transfer. If I remember it correctly the guy on the other end/purchaser has to meet the NICS background requirements or he can’t have the gun. If you send it through an FFL dealer then that dealer can send it back to your dealer if the guy fails the NICS. If you send it to an FFL dealer by yourself and there is a problem then you either lose your gun or must find another FFL to get your gun back. (Guns in limbo are bad) Just a thought
  10. I feel your pain karl. I read a similar article the other day as well. We the people of the USA are broke and we are bailing out a bunch of leftist in the EU. At the rate we are going its generation Z that gets stuck with all of this debt.
  11. I am thinking about un-sporterizing a large ring Mauser and putting it back into a military stock with hand-guard. Currently the rifle has a 308 barrel on it that is a sporter configuration setting in a fancy Boyd stock. What I want to do is take a 308, F54 barrel and cut it like the original military barrel so I can add the original type sights and have it fit back into a military stock. I don’t want 8mm, I want to keep it 308. I just want to go back to the original look. Problem is I don’t have an old barrel to go by. Does anyone have the measurements for the steps for a barrel that fits a large ring full length receiver? I need the measurements from the barrel shoulder forward. Thank Guys I hope someone can help. (P.S. I have everything I need to do this with except the measurements)
  12. The Free trade boys have sold the USA down the river. China had at best a WWII Navel Fleet and a grossly under equipped Army, but thanks to NATFA, GAT and Globalism China is emerging with one of the Worlds more equipped militaries in the world. I have friends that scrap at a professional level: the Chinese have been buying all of the 4140 and 1040 American made scrap steel they can get their hands. They really want the steel (4140) from telescoping hydraulic cylinders from frameless Dump trailers. This is the type of steel used for gun barrels and cannon. I remember telling my friends that some day the USA is going to get this steel back from China in the form of Bullets and Bombs. It looks like it’s just a matter of time. P.S. I wonder how many people know the real reason the government stepped in and saved GM. Back in 2000 the remaining bulk of US manufacturing capacity capable of producing war materials was in the hands of 5 companies, GM, Ford, Toyota, GE and Lockheed Martin. Buy 2008 our remaining capacity was still in those same 5 companies but GE was in trouble with their appliance Division and Toyota was having trouble. Of the remaining US companies GM represented 40% of ALL remaining USA manufacturing capacity capable of building war materials. The government had NO choice but to save GM or risk relying on out side sources for weapons and parts. Something that can not be done. So when you guys say the global boys sold us out, YES they did and they did it in a big way, one that I call treason!
  13. This country is becoming one sick puppy when a man can be arrested for defending his family, property and life from a gang of thugs.
  14. Karl and Dr. HESS I would like to add that you could put fluoride in the drinking water of the lower classes to keep them dumb down and docile. You would also want gun control. You could claim it’s for the children and you could sell the idea to the dumb down masses as being reasonable and law-abiding After all you don’t want people waking up from their slumber and figuring out what you’re doing to them. An armed society would be a lot harder to control than an unarmed society. You may be forced to start wars in foreign lands so you could have an excuse to send your troops out of the country thus allowing foreign troops to come onto your home soil and control the crowds. Since most soldiers would be unwilling to fire upon their own people using foreign troops would solve the problem of the few bitter clingers that refuse to give up their freedoms and their guns.
  15. Well Karl maybe the State of Arizona needs to look at this ruling the way Chicago looked at the recent McDonald Supreme Court case ruling. Chicago didn’t say “oh well the Court has spoken so if people want to exercise their Right to own a gun then let the people have their way” Instead Chicago said this means we can force people to jump through a thousand hoops, pay high fees and wait and wait and wait until we decide they can get a permit. Why doesn’t Arizona take the Chicago approach or why dont the State say up-yours Federal government we have the 10 amendment. What’s Obama going to do arrest the Governor and legislature?
  16. Swamprat I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. But please don’t beat yourself up or blame yourself for not sharing your feelings with her because swamprat, she knew. This woman was with you for 42 years, you have been blessed my friend. Her passing may rip at your heart, but she went peaceful in the night without pain while she was with someone she loved.
  17. There is a swedge tool for reforming primer holes in once fired brass boxer brass. I do not remember the name of the company that makes the tool but with the price of brass if there is a way to salvage the brass properly I think it would be worth it I encourage caution using primers held in place with locktite. It might be something you could do in a survival situation using short loads but being safe is far better than being sorry.
  18. I need some information would a CZ24 stock fit a full length large ring Mauser receiver? The stock in question is for a CZ24. I believe there is a Yugo 24 model that is an intermediate length mauser receiver like the Yugo 48. I’m not talking about a stock for those intermediate actions. I need a military stock that fits a full length action and I heard about a CZ24 stock that I can afford
  19. FC, I believe that what you requested is called the M3 money supply and the Fed No longer makes that info available. By knowing the M3 money supply figure you would have a direct correlation to the true inflation rate. I think the best guess number is currently 16% more money is being printed than is being destroyed. Or 16% more money is being added to the money supply currently
  20. Ken do you know if they have anymore of those castings? Ken I don’t know if you’ve seen this free book or Not but this might help you “A guide to the drilling reaming and broaching a bolt action receiver at home” by Raymond Benwood Don’t be afraid to share this book with others. The author on the 1st page in his book asks that his book be shared with others freely. In fact he says that it is his personal desire that his book be stored copied and shared with others for the purpose of promoting a 2nd amendment culture. These links were active the last time I checked. The JPFO link is No longer available on their page but is still active. The scribd links seem to be the best. I suggest everyone makes copies and share with friends while this type of info is still available. I printed out a copy so I could see/have the template’s that are used to cut/mill the magazine feed lips and ramp area http://www.scribd.com/doc/3615602/BA http://www.jpfo.org/filegen-a-m/boltaction.htm http://www.scribd.com/doc/14066913/Selfmade-Mauser-bolt-action-receiver
  21. Did you do the bolt for that gun? If not who did? Where did you get the handle. I have a mauser bolt that has set for 10 years and I would love to have the bolt handle made to look like the bolt on your build. Do you have pictures of the bolt alone that you could share
  22. My first answer is yes. I’m going to assume the stick welder you have access to is an AC welder. This is my suggestion… Set up the bolt in a holding jig. Use a heat sink Wrap the bolt lugs and entire bolts in wet towels Use heat control past in the cocking area Use a 7018 rod (they have them for AC welders) When you draw the arc hold the rod so the arc is away from the bolt and points toward the handle. When you do start welding DO NOT hold a constant arc and try and fill the whole area with one pass. Weld like your tack welding the bolt on and removing slag with each pass
  23. Our families are the greatest asset that we have and when they are gone their memory is with us for ever. I will never forget the day that we buried my father. I spent most of the time holding the hand of my grandmother at the funeral home. The anguish that was on her face is still with me today. Even though my father was the oldest she always called him her baby because she was so young when she had him. Horsefly it sounds like you have been blessed to have a very wonderful grandmother.
  24. Well FC this must be the week for crazy stories because the next 2 makes little to NO sense to me. The first article says we (the Obama administration) are seeking to negotiate Peace with the Taliban http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Military/2010/0127/Afghanistan-summit-Why-is-the-US-backing-talks-with-the-Taliban The second article is from a dubious source but seems to confer with the first article. Since my family has a long history of military service if there’s any truth to it then needless to say I’m not happy. The jest of the article is that Obama is willing to cut a “deal with the Taliban” or has the title says “surrender” http://www.whatdoesitmean.com/index1329.htm P.S. Please don’t get angry with the messenger I’m as shocked as anyone that we would have to deal with these people. The first article is bad enough and like I said if there’s any truth to the second article then I demand immediate “Impeachment” proceedings against Barry or what ever his name is. Brokengun
  25. One reason for the shortage maybe the increase in demand caused by RBN talk show hosts promoting Mosin Nagant’s has a cheap survival rifle. This has been going on now for over a year. Most people wanted the M44 rifles instead of the 91/30 but I look for the supply of those guns to start becoming in short supply
