  1. Millions of old firearms were made without serial numbers. I have never seen an old Stevens or Springfield shotgun with a serial numbers. Now having a firearm with a serial that has been filed or ground off is something entirely different. In Illinois when a sell or transfer is made a record of said transfer must require the serial number of the firearm or if No serial number is available then a description of the firearm is required. Plus we have a lot of older firearms that have a number but unless you disassemble the firearm you can’t find it. American arms made a lot of revolvers that way over 100 years ago. I say if your concerned check with an attorney knowledgeable in firearm law. Personally if the firearm doesn’t have a filed off serial number I wouldn’t worry about it.
  2. I normally try to stay out of political conversations but since I live in the not so great state of Illinois I thought I would share at least one attempted accomplishment of Obama while he was an Illinois state senator. He supported an Illinois Senate bill SB 1195. The Bill made it out of committee in Both the Illinois House and Senate. Had the Bill made it into law virtually every semi-auto in the state would have been banned. To make things worse those firearms were subject to CONFISCATION within I believe 90 days of the passage of the Bill. Fortunately A ground swell of grass roots activity sprung up in Illinois at the last moment and stopped the Bill. That’s right Ladies and Gentlemen Obama supported a “Gun Ban, Confiscation Bill” while he was an Illinois state senator. If this guy gets into the white house expect the same thing to happen again. P.S. I never voted for Obama to become US senator although some gun owners did because they thought they were getting him out of the Illinois senate. Personally I didn’t want to inflict Obama on the rest of the nation.
  3. Bubbamauser I have to ask what type or brand of Appliance epoxy paint did you use and where did you get it?
  4. Dr.Hess your right Ron Paul is the Best. The main stream media is trying everything they can to undermine Ron Paul. Paul has placed 2nd in Nevada and 2nd in Louisiana yet the media is silent. The Ron Paul message is getting out there, I just got my latest shotgun news and there are 2 ads in it for Ron Paul, both paid for by private citizens. Personally I’m voting Ron Paul. I know their undermining him but if there is NO clear leader going into the GOP convention, then the issues that Ron Paul supports will have to get some attention. Hilary or Obama will be a gun owner’s night-mare but my hope is that Ron's strong support for gun rights will be part of the republican plat-form.
  5. Z1R, what do you charge for altering a bolt? I have a Yugo bolt that I forged, it functions ok and looks ok but I’m not happy with it, it’s to short. I will probably need a new handle welded on to lengthen it. Where I forged it at the root is fine it’s just the length and angle that I don’t like. If you would prefer I can call you, I assume your contact info is in the link for McCabe guns?
  6. This is just a suggestion but before you replace the spring take a look at the lip on the magazine box and see if it’s bent. The magazine box lip has a very slight upward bed in it so that the latch can hold it in place. The latch also has a very slight angle on its contact surface. If the contact surfaces are ok then I would replace the spring.
  7. I have printed out the book being offered by JPFO as a FREE down load and read it several times. The amount of information is incredible, each time I read it I find something new. I suggest that everyone goes to JPFO, burn a copy on to CD, plus print out a copy. Then please set down in a nice comfortable chair and read it, I think you will be surprised. This guy tells how to cut the magazine feed lips and cartridge ramp, plus suggest how people can come together and form builder squads and share in the cost of making the broaches. Guy’s in my humble opinion this book is a must read for gun owners interested in the Mauser Rifles. http://www.jpfo.org/boltaction.htm
  8. I'm as giddy as a school girl with her first kiss. www.jpfo.org has a free down load for a book on the drilling, reaming and broaching a bolt action receiver at home. the guy that wrote the book builds his own mauser large ring receiver and shows step by step the method that he uses. When completed he uses a standard large ring bolt, trigger guard, trigger and sear to finish the build. This thing looks like a regular mauser, with some very suttle differences, that an un trained eye may not even catch. He built this thing using standard tools that most home gun smiths all ready have available
  9. You need to use either a steady rest or a follow rest, depending on the cut that you are making.
  10. I too have been thinking about building an ultra light right on a Mauser receiver. The question that I have is much can the barrel be turned down and still be considered safe. I have seen some old Mauser military barrels that were fairly small in the chamber area and they were 8mm.
  11. I know a man that is a professional scraper; he told me last year that the Chinese are taking all of the hydraulic cylinders from semi dump trailers that they can get. These cylinders are made of 4140 and 1040 hardened steel. That’s barrel steel for rifles and artillery He also told me the Chinese all taken all of the copper and brass they can get their hands on.
