  1. Pretty much what I had in mind. The wood looks "bleached" Like the stain faded. It is evident when the butt plate's removed that there is a stain on it. I'm thinking of adding a step of a applying some Solar Lux American Walnut thinned about 8-1 with DA to bring back and even out some of the tones. Then a coat of BLO, but not enough to make a sheen. I'm not sure what the original finish is but it sure looks like an oil finish. I really never cared for semi-buckhorn sights, but they line up automatically when it's brought to the shoulder. I sent my Uncle a very sincere thank you today. Edit; does anyone know how to check which model this is?
  2. Welded or forged? Davis May is hard to beat for forging bolt handles.
  3. Cool, Thanks. I have both those powders. I looked through my reloading stuff last night and found this in 30 cal excluding match types and FMJ; 165gr Partitions 165gr Accubonds 150gr Accubonds 150gr Sierra FP 170gr Hornady FP 170gr Partition RN 170gr Rem Core Lokt I'm leaning toward the 150gr Accubonds, but I'm willing to bet the 170gr bullets for the 30-30 would be an awesome deer load at 300 Savage velocities at iron sight ranges. The gun has no scope, nor is it drilled and tapped so it'll never have one. Serial number puts it right around 1951. Picked it up today, updated with pics, bluing is almost 100%. One small ding in the stock, 2 small scratches on the receiver. Wood looks great but a little "dry" The thing is beautiful! Pics didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped.
  4. I imagine Tom Green's already responded?
  5. Thanks all. Plumbum, we currently hunt Eastern Roscommon County. I look forward to cleaning it up and shooting it. I just priced brass, egads! did prices really go that high? And loaded ammo is over $20 a box? I'm open to stock cleaning suggestions. I've never tried to clean up a stock without damaging the finish before. I figure it could use a good cleaning and I don't want to damage the finish or the checkering. Also if anyone has any 300 Savage pet loads I'm all ears.
  6. Today I was told that I inherited my grandfather's deer rifle. I kind of have some mixed emotions about the whole thing, which strikes me as a bit odd. It was only a few years ago that my father gave me his dad's old Winchester 30-30. I worked up some good hand loads and I've taken it out every deer season since hoping to put venison in the freezer with it. I filled my doe tag with it last season, probably the first time that rifle's taken a deer since my grandfather "upgraded" to a 30-06 in the 70's (my brother has the 30-06). Anyway, my mothers dad, realizing he probably wouldn't use his old rifle again, gave it to my uncle a few years ago. My grandfather passed away last December. I remember visiting my grandfather a year or so ago and he had mentioned that he gave the rifle to my uncle hoping he'd use it to go deer hunting but he never did. There aren't really any hunters in my mom's family. Yesterday my uncle brought the old rifle with him when the family visited my grandmother for mother's day. My uncle gave my parents the rifle to give to me. He felt my grandfather would want me to have it. It's at my parents house now. It's a Savage 99 in .300 Savage. I haven't seen it in at least 10 years. It was always kept in a case in the hall closet. My father says it looks almost new but could use a good cleaning and there's an old box of shells with it with 12 left. Probably the only box my grandfather ever bought. He wasn't much of a hunter and probably bought it just to go "up North" with the guys. Looks like I'll be needing some .300 Savage dies and some time at the range. And yes, I plan to put some meat in the freezer with it.

    May 11

Congrats Jerry, Going on only 11 years here.
  8. Definately check out their website for the requirements. If you have further questions, call them in advance or check the CMP forum. I bought my first Garand last spring, shipped to my door, it was a relatively painless process. What to look for depends on what you want in the end. I planned to build a "new" M1 for JCG. I bought one of the "woodless Danes" replaced the worn parts, bought new stock hardware and ordered a new stock and barrel. Then I'll find a smith to rebarrel and repark. I'm not that far yet. If you're keeping it as is, I think I'd look for the same thing I'd look for in any other firearms purchase. You can easily replace any worn small parts. Barrels are another matter.
  9. They voted for Barack because he supports gun rights. It's true! It's on his site. Barack Hussein Sportsman's Rights The Dems won't even count my State. Obama_FactSheet_Western_Sportsmen.pdf
  10. From what I understand, the dog is fine and they didn't destroy the raccoon. I was sort of surprised they didn't. I don't know what kind of dog it was, I was told one of those "Paris Hilton" dogs. Don, one of my ex girlfriends lived out in the country, they raised chickens, rabbits and had a huge garden. Something was stealing from the garden at night and it was thought to be a raccoon. One morning the cat came home all beat up, nothing serious just some fur missing and some good scrapes. We figure she got into it with the raccoon. The night time garden raiding stopped after that night.
  11. OMG you guys! I just got home from work and midnights told me an unbelievable story. I found out tonight that my department responded to a frantic call from a resident about his dog being attacked. Seems a Raccoon got ahold of the dog and took it up a tree. I wouldn't have believed it except that I listened to the 911 call and the officer that responded told us that the raccoon was absolutely huge.
  12. Happy Birthday Brendon! - Pat
  13. I like the center left also. I wasn't sure what to expect when I opened this thread though.

    Gearpay

245 Auctions on Gunbroker accept this form of payment. Wonder if it's a safer or less safe alternative to paypal. Probably too soon to tell. Sounds like it might be a fairly new thing.

    Gearpay

Anyone use Gearpay to pay for auctions on GB or AA? Or is anyone aware of any problems with them?
  16. If you're talking about my cat, I have no doubt. She fits the sterotype of a house cat almost perfectly. She adopted us back when we lived in a small apartment. The story Karl wrote a long time ago about Tawney chasing off an intruder that snuck accross the border into her teritory is one of those posts that sort of stuck with me. Some animals are smarter than some people.
  17. I'll giver her a go; Karl's cat is fatter than my cat. SKS's (or is it SKSi?) are better than Mausers and Mosins .270 is better than 30-06 and 9mm is better than .45 ACP. Yankees make better chili than Texans I was all exited about voting for Hillary if we had a do-over primary here in MI. I once had a nightmare that Barack was sworn in as President, Hillary was the Veep and Pelosi was present at the ceremony in a stage of undress. (visualize that when you close your eyes)
  18. My wife and I watched it the other night. At the end we both looked at each other and said "huh?" I liked it just enough to put it one notch above "Eyes Wide Shut"
  19. One of my bosses showed me this site some time ago. Global Incident Map
  20. Since Midway seems to be trying hard to price itself off the list of companies I buy reloading supplies from, I've been buying more from Grafs. Has anyone heard of F&M? F&M Reloading they're prices look pretty reasonable and I can't believe I haven't heard of them.
  21. Has anyone else noticed a common thread of mental illness? I think most States closed their last mental health facilities years ago. I might be mistaken, but it seems none of the shooters had really close family ties either. I don't expect to see a movement to make mental health services more available or open up State hospitals again and I think our society has "progressed" beyond the traditional family. It takes a village now you know. It's easier to hold guns responsible than to concede that perhaps the social enlightenment of the past few decades wasn't the greatest thing after all. That being said, I'm seriously considering picking up an AR lower this summer before I can't have one, and picking up that Browning HP I've wanted for a long time.
