  1. I tested two 1911s today after fitting new bushings, and in one case a new slide stop. #1. My Rock Tactical, which I have set up to be able to run 10mm through. 10mm slide is one from ParaOrdnance. Photo shows testing done with the Rock's 45 acp bushing at the top, and the new, tighter bushing lower down. There were two loads tested, 4 of each. More of a function test than a real accuracy test. At this time I can't remember POA for the upper group, but the new bushing brings everything to right about POA. I noticed that while the 2 4 shot groups overlap just a bit, the centers are seperated by about 1 1/2". The lighter bullet/load shoots a bit higher and to the left. I'm not working for accuracy yet, more of a function test. The lighter load(175 gr SWC, 6.4 gr Unique) is almost too light. Both groups were fired from a rest at about 17 yds. #2. My son's 1991A1 Commander. I have set it up be a switch caliber. 9mm/38Super/10mm using a ParaOrdnance slide. 9mm& 38Super barrels were old style pencil Colt barrels, 10mm is a drop in barrel. Pencil barrels got new bushing because the old one's were very loose. 10mm bushing is a drop in, but fit perfectly. The original 45acp barrel also got a new bushing. 9mm slide stop was loose, so I got a new Fusion 9mm slide stop that measured right at .200". 10mm groups were fired from a rest at 17 yds. Unfortunately, due to a very tight chamber, some of my reloads wouldn't chamber, so target only got shot 5 times. 9mm/38Super/45acp were shot at 10 yds, using two handed hold. Gun is set up for 10mm, so it has a 26# MS. Trigger pull is harder, so there is some vertical stringing since I am getting used to the trigger. Target one. 2 groups. 18 shots. 9mm & 38 Super, old bushings, old slide stop. 23# MS. Target 2. 9mm, new bushing, new slide stop. 26# MS. Target 3. Same target, with 38Super superimposed. Target #4. 10mm. 17 yds, from a rest. Test no fully done. 180 TC loads wouldn't chamber. 4 shots of 175 SWC(6.4 gr Unique), 1 shot of 180 TC. Target #5. 45acp barrel, new bushing. 185 gr JHP PMC. Carry ammo.
  2. I decided to fix up my son's Commander to be able to shoot multiple calibers like I have done to my 1911 Gov'ts. Commanders are a bit easier, since their 45 acp slide is already cut for the wider, taller 9mm/38Super ejector needed for the conversion. When Sarco had their ParaOrdnance slides on sale, I grabbed two, a Gov't length for my 10mm and a Commander length for his conversion. ParaOrdnance cut the breechface for the 9mm/38Super/40S&W/10mm all the same, meaning to 40/10mm rim diameter, which makes things easier. I had all the other parts already. I got it together last week, and took it for a test run. Both barrels shot to the same POI at about 10 yds, but the group was about a palm sized group. I could litterally wiggle the buzhing and barrels in the slide. Soooooo, I went looking for new bushings. Biggist problem was, these were the old style thin "pencil" barrels, which are about 1/2" 'n diameter. Nobody makes bushing for them any more, though they can be special ordered.................read that, at a higher cost. Being a bit stubborn, I did some searching on Ebay, and stumbled across 2 Kings Gun Works old style bushings. One in blue and one in stainless. Which was exactly what I wanted. Fitting was easy, or relatively so. The bushing went into the slide with finger pressure, no fitting. However, the lug needed fitting, which took a bit. Fitting the bushing to the barrel took longer. I straight bored them, and then relieved the barrel to allow tilt...................per the directions. The 9mm barrel is blued and the 38 Super barrel appears to be stainless steel. So, I fitted the blued bushing to the blued barrel, and then stainless to stainless. That way he can't get them confused. If he does, no big deal, the blued 9mm barrel will fit in the stainless bushing, but a little looser than its proper bushing. But the stainless barrel will not go into the blue bushing. Hopefully the new 45 acp bushing will get here tomorrow, so I can fit it and go test everything Sunday. Next week I order a 10mm barrel for him, which should be an exciting round to shoot in the Commander. I've been considering getting another Commander slide and fitting it to my Detonic sized frame and building another 10mm for my carry gun. I think it would be great to have a gun that carries 7 shots that have more ooompf than a .357 Mag.
  3. As long as you can still feel, you're doing good.
  4. Since I live on the left Coast in Sunny CA, where 10mms are hard to find, I decided to put one together. I located a ParaOrdnance slide with a breechface cut for 40cal/10mm rim, and a rather inexpensive barrel, and put one together using my RIA Tactical 45acp frame. Once my taper crimp die got here, I loaded up some ammo using two different bullets and powders. Loads were a powder coated 175 gr SWC over 6.4 gr of Unique, and powder coated 180 TC bullet loaded over 12.7 gr WC820(basically AA#9). Barrel must have a tight chamber, because loaded uncrimped rounds that would drop into my Midway case gauge would not chamber more than 1/2 way. I used a flat based firing pin stop, 23# mainspring, and 20# recoil spring. I am probably going to have to go up to 23# recoil spring, as empties were landing 20 feet away. I was very surprised by the groups I got. I am out of practise, and yet they were decent groups. Better than what I expected for a $72 barrel. Group 1, using midrange Unique load, shot at 10 yds, two handed hold. Second group, using the WC820 load was fired at the same target as I wanted to see how much of a POI change there was. Final group was 4 rounds from each load, total of 8 shots, fired from about 18 yds, supported. The primers look like they might be flowing a bit, and the loads aren't that hot. I used an old Colt 9mm firing pin, and it might be undersized. Since I am using a ParaOrdnance slide, I think I will try to find a PO 9mm firing pin, and see if that changes any thing. Today's shooting was merely to test everything to see how it functions, especially the barrel. If it wasn't accurate, then I was going to have to find another one. But it seems fine. Just for giggles, I dropped my 9mm barrel into the slide and fired some shots at 10 yds. Using 124 gr ball, and about 5.5 gr Unique, POI went up about 4". I think I was save that barrel for the dedicated 9mm/38 Super slide that I have. Right now, I can use my Rock Tactical for the 45 acp it came as, and then switch slides and barrels and go to 9mm, 38 Super, and 10mm. I'm debating on going to 40 S&W. But, now to order a heavier spring.
  5. Monday morning I had a checkup, not quite a week since surgery, but close enough. During surgery, they inject a gas bubble into the eye, to help hold the retina in place during healing. Wednesday afternoon, the day of surgery, the pressure in the eye was a bit high, so they put me on eye drops to help reduce the pressure. Monday morning, the pressrue was a bit low, so now I am off the pressure meds. The black spot in my vision, a "1/4" circle, from about the 3 o'clock to the 6 o'clock position is now gone, there is color there again. However, vision in the affected eye(left eye), is still completely blurry over the entire eye. By blurry, I mean I litterally cannot see movement in front of my eye, unless it is in the right position. Dr. says it will probably be that way until the gas bubble is absorbed. Which could be up to 60 days. No "pain" but yesterday it was very irritated, which may be the stitches. At this point I'm not sure if the "cure" is better than the disease or not. But, I'm upright and functional. No bending, or lifting heavy objects for another week. So, to keep myself busy I worked on a couple of project guns. Converting 45 acp 1911s to shoot other calibers. Currently, I am working on getting my Rock Island Tactical 45 acp to shoot 10mm, in additon to 9mm & 38 Super. Slide is fitting, now waiting on the barrel. My son's Commander can now handle 9mm & 38 Super. But depth perception is gone, and no peripheral vision on that side, so I have to be careful.
  6. I don't hurt. But, the eye is completely blurry. I had a post op check up, and the Office staff is going, "What the does chart say?". I'm like, "What chart?" 4 eye drops to be applied 4x daily, at 5 minute intervals, which is tough since I can bairly see the spout on the bottle, and 1 antibiotic ointment. My neighbor had a complete detchmemnt due to a fall, and she had to lay on her stomach or sit face down for 3 weeks after surgery. All I had to do that for was the first day. All in all it could have been much worse.
  7. Have people you know and trust donate in your name. That will help. Here the local bank has about a 60 question list that one has to go through, and any "yes" could disqualify someone. I give about every 10 weeks, but last April I suspect I caught West Nile Virus, so I put myself on hold for 4 months, which is the blood bank's requirement for a Dr diagnosed case of West Nile.
  8. Dr's opinion is that it was just age. The "vitrious humor", the fluid in the eye ball is more like a jelly and shrinks with age. Dr felt that as it shrank it pulled the retinal layer away from the wall of the eye.
  9. I just had surgery this morning for a detached retina. Fortuantely, it had not gotten to the macula yet. It was discovered Friday afternoon, and surgery was this morning at 6. I spent yesterday getting pre surgery physical and lab work. I've been lying face down all day, and am now dosing my eye with about 5 different types of eye drops and meds. Now I can expect increased chance of cataracts. Forntunately, it's not my shooting eye.
  10. http://http://bangshift.com/bangshiftxl/this-remote-control-battle-ship-is-all-steel-has-guns-that-fire-real-ammunition-and-was-built-in-the-1930s/ This Remote Control Battle Ship Is All Steel, Has Guns That Fire Real Ammunition, And Was Built In The 1930s This remote Control Battle Ship Is All Steel, Has Guns That Fire Real Ammunition, And Was Built In The 1930s This could be the most mind-blowing thing that we have ever seen listed on Craigslist. Matt Cramer of DIYAutotune.com tipped us off to this 10′ long, remote control, steel, battle ship with functioning weapons that was built in 1937 by a man who police later suspect killed himself with one of the miniature weapons he had come to be known for. The ship is a tiny (with respect to the real one) recreation of the USS California and it was on the bleeding edge of recreational remote control technology. Even by today’s standards, the amount of functionality it has is incredible. The craft weighs 360lbs and as you would expect, it can be controlled to drive around whatever water you’d like to stick it in (apparently the builder used to use it in his pool and then put it in a local pond when he really wanted to open it up). The guns are the thing that we’re kind of fixated on and you’ll understand why when we tell you that there are 12 of them that fire .38 caliber ammunition and four of them that fire .22 caliber ammunition. That’s what leads us to the weirdest part of the story…the man who built the ship.
  11. I got some, and pulled it apart. I found at least one that had black powder in it.
  12. AR15 and AR/PA10 receivers are totally different, the triggers and hammers, springs etc are the same. Palmetto State Armory changed a couple of small parts, which means they have proprietary stuff. They went to bigger hinge and takedown pins, which I think is a good idea, as well as a larger bolt stop. As long as one stays with all PSA stuff one shouldn't have a problem. Right now, you can get a stripped lower(blem) for $95, and a parts kit for $550(18" barrel). If you want a 20" barreled kit like mine, then it is $600. And free shipping. So, you're looking at $700 or so when finished. Here in CA, we only ship the lower/receiver to the dealer, since the state makes him charge us sales tax on whatever he gets. So, the lower/recevier goes to him, the rest comes straight to my house. PTAC stuff is a bit cheaper but I stick with PSA stuff. http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ar-10/ar-10-upper-assemblies.html http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ar-10/lowers.html
  13. That is the way it USED to be. That was before "Bullet Buttons' were figured out, and invented. That is what held me off for years from getting an AR platform rifle. The whole "punch the pin, pivot the upper up to reload" bit. With bullet buttons, that is no longer the case, though one is still limited to 10 rd mags. One can now buy plastic push tools with a key ring, and hang it on ones finger when shooting, and use that to detach the magazine. One can reload fairly quickly that way. However, if one has a Registered Assault Weapon(RAW), one can use what ever legally owned "hi cap" mags one owns. That is the reason I prefer the M14 pattern rifles. By installing a fake Flash Suppressor or a Muzzle Brake, one can use whatever mags one legally owns. I prefer the ability to use my "hi cap" mags. I have just completed my PA10. I can't say I built it, since putting a AR platform together is like using Leggos. I bought a complete upper, less handgaurd, and saved money. My son wanted the retro, so l got a Vietnam era triangle handguard and installed it. Weight PA10..........9 lbs 0 oz(3 lbs more than my AR15 M4) M14S.........9 lbs 10oz Length PA10..........38 1/4" to 41 5/8" M14S.........40 7/8" Trigger pull PA10...........6 lbs 4 oz(took work to get there, started out at 8 1/2+ lbs) M14S..........4 lbs 8 oz Barrel diameter at FS PA10........... .725"(very muzzle heavy)USN3 M14S............598" Length of Pull PA10..........11 1/2" to 14 3/4" M14S.........13 3/16" http://s752.photobucket.com/user/Sailormilan2/media/PA10M14S_zpsoq25ixpq.jpg.html][/url]
  14. I did a trigger job on it yesterday, and to the pull down to 6# 4oz. Doesn't sound good, but it started at about 8 1/2#+, and it is much smoother now. I will probably go shoot it next week. I am still waiting for the handguards to get here. I finally found out that the triangular front cap with fit any of the handguards, which I wish I had known before I ordered the ones I did. Comparing it to my 18 1/2" barreled M14, the PA10 weighs in at right at 8# without mag and front handguards. Barrel is heavier in diameter, and weight is forward on the rifle. My shorter barreled M14 weighs in at 9# 11oz with sling and no mag. The M14 system has better sights and trigger. One added plus, is that here in CA, I can use what 20 rd magazines I own in the M14, since I have a fake Flash Suppressor on it, while I am stuck with on 10 rd mags in the PA10.
  15. Check out Palmetto State Armory and their prices. I built mine using their "blemmed" receivers, and saved a bunch of money. The "blems" as cosmetic blems. Something in the finish, and quite franlky I couldn't find the blem.
  16. Palmetto State Armory has been having some good deals lately, so I thought I would finish up the stripped lower I got last year. I had started piecing the lower together using AR15 parts, but apparently their lowers are a low profile DPMS varient that have 3 proprietary parts. The hinge/take down pins are larger in diameter, and the bolt stop is larger than the AR15/M16 part. So, I had to get those parts, as well as a different buffer tub, buffer, and spring. 2 weeks ago they had complete uppers, less hand guards, at a $60 savings over a complete upper. So, I ordered one with a 20" barrel. I tried to determine what hand guard it took, but Customer Service at Palmetto had no clue as to which hand guard it was. So, I had to wait till the upper arrived today. It turns out it takes the 12" Vietnam style triangular hand guards, so they are on order from Numrich. My son wanted the plastic painted, and didn't like the dark forest green I originally painted it with. So, I repainted what plastic I have with OD green, covered with matt clear(which unfortunately, gives it a bit of a sheen). He also wants the M16 style carry handle sight, so a detachable one is on order. It weighs right at 8#, with no mag. Compared to my M14, with 18" medium weight barrel, that weighs 10#. My standard M14, with Ewings scope mount and Bushnell 10x, that weights 11# 14oz. With their prices the way they are, one can put together a complete PA10 for about $700. Tomorrow, I will do a simple trigger job on it, and then wait for the rest of the stuff to get here. But, here it is:
  17. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9%C3%9725mm_Dillon To make one, just get a 10mm gun or upper, then get a 8mm or 38 Super barrel, and rechamber.
  18. I just found that Sarco has some ParaOrdnance slides that are cut for 10mm. I'm looking really hard at the 6". That will boost the performance a bit, without having to really hotrod the load, something that is a bit of a No No since it doesn't have a built in ramp. If I do that, I may consider the 9x25 Dillon. 9mm on a 10mm case. It is supposed to be an awesome round.
  19. The problem with mine, is that it won't even start in either of the two bolts that I tried it with.
  20. No rush, Don. I'll periodically check with you to see if it is read.
  21. I agree, Tony. I have spoken with several women that I met on "Dating" sites. Almost every one expected me to move, as they didn't want to leave their families. There was one who refused to move to my house, and my town, and had several other "restrictions". We broke up because I wasn't marrying her fast enough. She always said that she "had" to be married to survive. Then she met another guy, got married, and did with him everything she said she wouldn't do with me............................................................but then he made almost twice as much money as I did.
  22. Does any one have a die to chase the buttress threads on a Mauser bolt shroud? I just got a commercial one that either wasn't finished, or was cut out of spec.
  23. He can send it off, to places like Shuff's or Deans Gun Restorations. Actually, if one has a solid bench vise, with the proper tools one can do it one's self. It really isn't hard to do.
  24. I know that God says He is a husband to is us(Is.54:5, Jer.31:32), but has anyone actually met someone who believes that? So far, I have met two ladies who say that God is their Husband. I was talking with a lady I used to date last night. We dated previously, but broke up because I got her all hot and bothered one night by kissing, though nothing happened, and she wanted to tell me that she wouldn't have sex with me. A fact I already knew. She started out by telling me that I was a "Godly man", and I had a bit of a meltdown. I did(and still don't) not feel that I am qualified or worthy to be called a Godly man. When I objected her calling me that, she insisted, and in the space of about two minutes I went from being a Godly man to a man with no close personal relationship with God. That ended that relationship. Scroll forward to last night. It has been a while, and I was trying to see if maybe I had over reacted. So, we talked about that, and I explained it to her, and I think she understood where I was coming from. Then she says, "God is her Husband", and she won't cheat on Him because He does all kinds of things for her. She will stay with Him, until He hands her off to a man. This was her way of telling me that she wouldn't mess around before marriage..................a fact I already knew. This is now the 2nd woman I have heard say this, though I have heard others refer to that. The first would come into a Christian chat room on a Christian dating site and type, "I don't need a man in my life, God is my husband". I don't think I have ever a guy saying anything remotely similar to this. There is a reason why I have pretty much decided to stop dating ladies from my specific religon. sigh
