Thanks, yep heavy mount, I have recently changed it out
no need for such a mount on this lightweight rifle
-
been a long time since I was here
So I have a Mauser 98 action, I trued it, lapped the lugs, welded on a new bolt handle, drilled & taped it, mounted a Ken Ferrel steel mount, tapered the extractor for snap over and added a adjustable side safety trigger, the parkerized it.
going with a 6.5x55 f34 barrel tapper in 24 inch hunter with a boyds FWT stock?
inlet the bolt handle, and side safety trigger, then free floated the barrel, now only waiting for parkerizing and devcon bedding
just finished parkerizing
is the co-op still going, I need to get a 6.5x5x55 reamer?, I know I donated one years ago..

very nice great looking rifle

Pitted
sand/bead blast it, fill the pitts with liquid metal then sand it and spray it with dura coat

Cartridge Pressure Standards
In the U.S., voluntary pressure standards for rifle cartridges are set by SAAMI, a member of ANSI. Most other countries in the world follow the standards of Europe's CIP (Commission Internationale Permanente pour l'Epreuve des Armes à Feu Portatives or Permanent International Commission for the Proof of Small-arms, sometimes referred to as the International Proof Commission).
The pressures in the table below are rounded up to the nearest ksi, ie.1000 psi. Cartridges are arranged, approximately, in order of bullet diameter and then by case volume.
piezo crusher
SAAMI CIP SAAMI CIP other
6.5x55 51 55 46
.308 Win 62 60 52 52
.30-06 60 59 50 51
So the M1Garand should have no problem with pressure
also I am looking at ar30 magazine it is single stack? no modificaion to the receiver
as far as the gas regulater
Schuster DCM Adjustable Gas Plug
my barreld receiver is on its way to McGowen they are going to use mine as abase to make the first 6.5x55
-
I'm just speculating but I imagine the location and size of the gas port could be altered to make up for lower pressure.
midway sells an adjustable gas plug for around 39.00
yes BM59 trigger fits perfectly
should be very interesting

Flaco not home yet still here counting the days, looking forward to getting home, I love the Carl Gustav
724wd, yep my wife, she is a little sniper now she loves shooting, I am sending the barrel to mcgowen for them to make one they have been very helpful

fm,
I had been thinking of the 308 cal Norwegian barrels that you had bought from Numrich. I believe you had posted a pic of that rifle showing spec4 what you'd done.
Did you have any trouble with feeding of the 308?
non they feed great, I make a pocket in theextractor and tapper itso the extractor snaps over the cartridge. works like a dream

Fmsniper, good to be hearing from you again. The M-1 project really looks interesting. Will it be using M-14 mags or does somethng have to be fabricated??
I am going to use a BAR mag, cut it in half and make it single stack, that way I do not have to mill the receiver to fit a magazine
-
The only option for that is to rechamber to '06 Ackley improved. It'll thoroughly clean up a 308 and give the old '06 a boost.

only way I made mine work is that it was a heavy target barrel Shilen, i set the shoulder back about 1/2 inch and finnish reamed it to 3006, it works great, but the barrel was very heavy it had allot of meat on it
when I first did it it was not far enough and I had 3006 casing expanding at the neck so I pulled it off and went deeper, you are better off just getting a good 3006 barrel..
here is the gun i am talking about

Welcome home, are you back at Ft. Irwin?
I'm interested in that 6.5x55 magazine fed Garand, it looks like a real winner.
Jimro
not home yet 50 or so more days, I am getting stationed in the UP Michigan to teach ROTC at MTU, I will be close to home after that I will retire, am getting to old for this Army stuff
good to hear from you Jimro, been a time
I have taken a liking to the 6.5, since I have been here in Iraq I have been working with a few companies on testing gear for them, one is Adams Arms AR 15 Piston system, works great buy the way and the other I was fortunate to see was the 6.5 grendel that one contractor was using, super accurate and vastly out performs the 5.56 rabbit round we carry, well I carried a M14 sniper rifle but thats me
the BC on the 6.5 bullets are very high compared to the 30's so they shoot flatter.but anyway I will walk you all through the project as it is being done, Ken at rock-solid Ind. http://www.rocksolidind.com/ has offered to help me with the scope mount for the M1 and he is supplying me the mount for the K31, he is a great guy to work with.
-
looking forward to seeing your project complete and at the range keep up the good work, let me know If I can help.
Mine is by far one of my most accurate rifles I have no Idea what it is capable of since I have no way of reloading, I do know that with factory ammo it has shot below .25 I love the rifle and it will stay with me till I am old and cant shoot anymore.
I know you all have seen it but its so perdy, remeber there needs to be a extractor cut in the barrel for a new barrel...
-
Gents your best bet is but one, AR10 DPMS low price, very accurate and easy to find.
Love mine will not sell it
I also am getting into the 6.5 grendel area, nothing more than new mag and replace the upper on my AR15 5.56, the round is excellent and great BC

As many of you OL’timers know I have been gone in Iraq for the last year, its been hard to get internet do to my remote locations, but I have it now at the JSS I live. I will be home in about 50-60 days my time is up, cant wait to get back to building, this board is the first I ever posted on years ago and have had a great time with many of you, so I am looking forward to it again.
Since I have been here I have been buying parts and also when I was on leave, my up coming projects are the following
K31 Retro
6.5 grendel in a AR15, with burris lazer scope for my wife, I allready have the upper and the scope,
And a magazine fed, 6.5x55 M1 Garand I picked up a barreled receiver from CMP, and BM59 trigger group from GB
and McGowen is making the short chambered barrel in 6.5x55, this garand will be mag fed allowing me to drill and tap the receiver for a top mount should be very interesting, the stock I have is a boyds laminate.

looks great nice detail on the work you guys have been getting better since I have been in Iraq, will be home in 60 days cant wait to get back to building
-
A lot. Measure, or look at a drawing of, the shoulder of the .308. Then see where on the .30-06 case it measures the same. That will give you the answer.
I did it and yes I had to set the shoulder back quite a bit
-
preference for me is
VZ24
after that 48 works just fine, as does 98, but keep in mind mid length actions have a fewer stocks availible; not much less but some
I have 308's built on most all types of Large rings all work great
by the way those barrels shoot very well
my wife and i tested one I built while home on leave with 168 Black hills it shot .6 with the first 5 shots fired in the barrel.....never got around to doing much else with it I needed to spend family time before coming back here to Iraq
it is built on a ATI lower half, action trued, lugs lapped, devcon steel bed
-
a pretty picture
-
so far with factory ammo .675, will try to get it better
-
parkerized the bold to match the rest of the gun then painted gray , parts of it to give pattern
some of the duracoat came off during the bedding but it is under the wood so not an issue, the pillar was a aluminium tube I put in the drill press and with a file made grooves in it for the bedding to grab, again thanks to Ken at rock solid
-
-
WOW!!! that is sweet!!!
Did u use Duracoat on that paint job? Or is this spray paint?
yes duracoat
-
stock is almost done in-letting, I was a little disappointed because it was not straight( receiver cut) but I fixed it , I use lipstick on the metal to leave marks on the wood to see were it needs to be cut out.
scope on rifle maybe paint it, and just finished the bolt handle cut
with black border or
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v198/FMSNIPER
looks like this
borders kind of match the stock
