I've always used a propane torch and tap the sights with a dead blow hammer as I heated. No pins or screws under the front sight?

AZ, Bubbamauser built a 7mmrem mag on a turk.

Brokengun, I will mount the reciver in a fixture. Various alignment tools and test indicators are used to ensure the threads are aligned with the receiver axis.

It worked well for a couple of years then I had a house fire and when I recovered it, the spring in the bolt was shot so the steel was softened. I don't have any more takeoffs or turk receivers but I don't know if I would do it again just because of how scared everyone was of it. I didn't hot load it but I never experienced any signs of overpressure setback etc. I'm in PA so it was overkill to begin with.

I did fire it the first 20 times with oiled cartridges with a string. it had at least 100 rounds through it before the fire.

This was the first Gunsmithing site I ever visited and I learned so much from the people here.

I have gotten them off with MAPP but I have never managed to make it work to attach one. Oxy Acetelyne is your best bet.

I actually moved as soon as I finished that house(of course) we got another fixer upper in a much better neighborhood with room for a shop and a nice yard, just no time to use any of it Give me a call I'm still in the city but up on the border with bellvue.The dogs are getting old not as much energy anymore.

I have been at some other gunsmithing sites due to a resentment against the "gunsmith in charge" here for a few years now, I got a birthday call from Tanglewood a couple weeks ago and decided to stop by and see how everyone was doing.

I think the webbing looks just fine. I probably will do the 300 when I get a few other project caught up. I've been messing around with a couple AK-47s that have distracted me.

 

I'm really surprised that some of the other posters have not jumped on this thread. This was was a hot topic a few years ago. I only know of one other member to build a

short belted magnum on a K-Kale, (a .300win mag) and he's still alive.

Clemson is right the only time I had to do this was for a 300 win. I have polished up rails and the feed ramp for '06 6.5 and 243 but didn't need to open them up to feed.

I should have paid more attention to your caliber.

I use an empty case covered with black marker to see where it is catching and start to open it up there with a file, checking often with the case covered in marker , but remember they call me bubba

You have a good eye, I bought it used but it said golden and the rest was unreadable from being polished. I didn't know it was an '03 it appears to have 2 grooves though

your right If I don't reload it is a compromise, but a 257 roberts if I don't reload is as big a compromise in other ways, I would need to reload my own 180 but the min oal for almost every other powder and bullet weight will work in the yugo mag without modifications

I never loaded corelokt or tried 180's ,I do know from loading data that I can load 180 and keep them to a lenght that fits and get maximum velocity (ref. Modern Reloading) everything I read about this conversion says it is one of the hardest to do and thats in no way true, none of the mechanical explanations put forward in this thread hold water if someone reloads. In my case the intermediate actions are now the cheapest I can find So if some one wants to build what they want on the most inexpensive action still available I will give actual hands on experience as to what is involved. Everything I hear appears to be read from a post and I know there have been plenty of them, I wish I could remember who told me this would work on this board about 4 years ago but I was not the first to do this by any means.

my point is some people have a yugo action and a 30-06 barrel and want to know if it will work and yes it will, with not much more work than a standard length (filing the magazine)

do whatever you feel will work for you, nothing is a waste of time or effort if you want to do it. If you decide to go the 30-06 route take lots of pictures, I 'm starting to think I have a magic M-48 that functions with minimal work and all factory ammo. heres the link to the last argument over this.

filing the front and rear of the magazine box works pretty well, there is a picture somewhere where too much was taken off and there are dents in the front from the bullet tips, I haven't had that problem though. once the magazine is opened up I polished the feed ramp a bit and it was good to go for me.

I'm restocking it, but this is the one I originally posted with the cut out stock

This is going to piss the purists off but it has worked and held up well for me.

I did the same thing the first time I tried to chamber a barrel before I had a lathe.

I figured I need to move the barrel in so I slowly filed the shoulder around the Circumference until I brought it back in enough, if you bring it in a little too far you can ream it again.

I know this will not ,and did not, produce a blue printed shoulder but a used barrel that shoots 3" moa with factory ammo works for a hunting rifle in my eyes

(my barrel was an ebay special so it wasn't in contact with the inner ring if yours is you will need to file some off the face also.)

Now that I have a lathe I may redo it but most likely it will stay as is, too many other projects

I have to say I agree with what almost everyone has so far, If I were building a rifle as a gift with a deadline I would run it up to Tanglewood for the bolt handle. but when I asked how to do it for the first time I got a response with directions( alot of the info from tanglewood). I don't see the direction or encouragment anymore. I also probably will have a different outlook on performing all of the work myself after I can perform all the work myself and have for a while. It has been my experience that sporterizing bolt action leads to gunsmithing to building semi's from parts kits and then to complete home builds(or incomplete ) I am trying to say all the info builds on it self and is not as hard as some make it appear to be (if I can do it anyone can), if you choose to try. In the beginning I needed the information to make a decision on wether I want to try though.

I'm not trying to split hairs, all the parts I could reasonably buy I did on my first project (scope rings mounts reamer (Ebay) bolt handle ) but if I was not encouraged to try to do things my self I would have never improved or moved on to bigger things. I remember a post on how to chamber a barrel with a ratchet extension and the procedures for doing it. I welded my first bot handle due to a link to a post by a "Mad Jack" that explained every aspect of the process.

The encouragement of the members of this board is why I tried to do alot of things and I hope Tinker is right and this direction is temporary because it would be really sad if its not.

I have been going through some of the recent posts and am starting to see a trend toward recommending work that people would glady post directions and their experience performing a few years back now being pushed into the realm of professional only projects. I'm interested in your opinion because the only reason I have a lathe and can use it a little bit ,weld and so on is because of what I started to learn on this board a few years back and all of your recomendations. I am greatful for what I have learned in a relatively short period of time and I think other's would like the same opportunity. I have less experience than the senior members here and personally like their work and aspire to it, so I feel a little uncomfortable posting right after them that something is manageable and here are the steps to do it after they post it should be done by a professional.

I need to know what other members think

I don't diagree with you , from the lee reloading manual 3.40 would even be too small for some loads (200gr imr4320) minimum OAL 3.440 but if I'm reloading it anyhow,I can equal the ballistics of that load with one with a minimum oal of 3.295 using a different powder(200gr accur 2700).There are 3 in the 200gr range that are 3.44 but none of the other weights come very close to the minimum oal 3.34 I also have shot cmp 30-06 through this with no feed issues. I can say I put various loaded gun show ammo through this to reclaim the brass and some did take a little nudge to chamber but nothing a little more polishing on the ramp would'nt fix.

I got mine to feed by loading the standard military magazine with 150gr. and chambering.

I opened up the box to at the front and rear until I got a caliper reading of 3.340 and then took the feed ranmp down even with the front of the magazine (a very minimul amount) just so I had it at the Spec OAL in case I ever used handloads I didn't roll or heavier bullets.

I just measured 2 other yugo mags and both can be filed down and get the spec OAL on both of them the box will be a little thin but it will be in the stock 100% so I don't think this will be an issue or it hasen't been for me.

I don't know where this myth that they cant be used for 06 length cases without major mods comes from but it is incorrect.

My first one was with screws and I have put almost a case through it by now with no problems The last two I did were with rivits just so they look more authentic (I can't tell a diference firing either ones). Sonics rivit advice is what I do also. works well.
