  1. http://www.jdcomponents.com/index.html I have yet to shoot a coyote. I bet these would do less damage than a 150grn in .30'06. I will wind up with a suitable rifle, but will have to make due with what I have for now.
  2. I just didn't add all of the details about my past. Little of it was on paper. I asked my recruiter what to do. In a round about way he helped me greatly without directly molesting too many rules. If it all had been on paper and I was not allowed to enlist I believe that my life would not have turned out as it did. I looked thru my SRB and counted 17 omissions. Works for me. There is always a nay-sayer commenting on our military. Strap a flack jacket and helmet on them, and take them out door-kicking in Iraq. After they change their diaper and dry their tears, their opinion may change.
  3. I like this post. I only wish that our country could grasp the ideas presented here. A long term mentality is not available. Too many people have not got an attention span longer than a 1/2 hour sitcom. I vote with a long term mentality. I look at how I would like this country to be like for my grandchildren and their children, while my oldest daughter is only 12 years old. Too many votes are tainted by voting with your hand out(what can you give me). History has been forged by fighting the good fight. The bill for freedom is still paid with blood, ours or theirs. I would rather pay the bill with theirs at their house than have to have an American Revolution all over again. It kind of seems to me that our government is devouring itself. Between polarised polital parties, legislating our freedom away, and political correctness; We the people are losing what so many have paid the ultimate price for since our Founding Fathers signed their death warrant- The Constitution. If freedom isn't worth a good, long, difficult fight, we owe them all an apology. Was it Stalin or Lenin that said, "They will be defeated from within."? I have not forgotten a day in September when our country was subjected to a brutal attack by cowards. Many that were up in arms that day are now carrying STOP THE WAR signs. They have forgotten. They will also most likely vote Hillary into the White House. Shameful. I wish this was all 20 years ago when my warrior days were beginning, so I could be there. If my parents had been handed my flag, they would not have dishonored my death by carrying my picture at an anti-war protest. Sorry, if I am just a bunch of long winded hot air. I am very frustrated without a place to vent. Feel free to delete my post if it is just a worthless rant from another delusional Marine Vet.

    Spit Upon

I find it strange that this radical behavior just suddenly pops out right after Clinton throws her hat in the presidential ring. How can anyone disrespect a person that has given so much of himself for them. My heart must be too close to honest old American values to understand the behavior of all of these city people.
  5. Tonight I was at about my 12th set of the year. I was calling with a Knight&Hale cottontail squaller, then with a Crit'r call standard. I was hunting over snow with moonlight/fading daylight to just moonlight over snow. I was blowing across about a 5mph crosswind. I had a coyote across the pond running back and forth in the brush at about 150 yards. I just couldn't get him to step out onto the ice. I was in the brush leaning against a tree. One of these times I will score. Sure is fun though. I think he left when I think my reed was frozen to the body and it sounded like when my daughter was learning clarinet, haha. Last weekend I had one sneak up on me in daylight to about 80 yards. If I had been looking through my scope at that one small spot I would have seen him, but all I saw were tracks. I at least want one hide to try tanning this year. It sure is more fun than sitting on a frozen lake staring down a hole not catching anything. I am using a Winchester Model 670 in .30/06 with Federal 150grn softpoints. This is a nice shooter. Some day I will build a nice .220 Swift. For now I will use what I have. Any suggestions appreciated.
  6. They sure have some good stuff on there. I especially enjoy watching Shootout. A lot of it is acted out, but they certainly work hard to depict the conditions of the event.
  7. There was a story going around construction sites that China was completing a skyscraper weekly. Not too bad for a country that still mines coal today in the way that was done here in the 1930's.
  8. I also like Knob Creek. Magical stuff. It has cured migranes, and helped me through my vasectomy, lol.
  9. I have been a history buff my whole life. I guess I wanted to experience those things depicted in the old war movies. I was originally going in the Army. I wanted to be a Ranger. My Army recruiter was a terrible liar. He mislead several of my friends. I met my Marine recruiter, and decided I could make it in the Marine Corps. I insisted on going Infantry. The Marine recruiters were as honest as a yardstick with me. I had high ASVAB scores. They wanted to place me in a technical job. They called me at least 2x a week to see if I had changed my mind on my chosen job. I hadn't. All military jobs are necessary. I was just more interested in beach assault, kicking down doors, and taking hills, and ship deployments. The only ribbon that I wanted and didn't get was the Combat Action Ribbon. I knew I wasn't going into the Boy Scouts.
  10. THe Marine Corps already had a 6.8mm round developed to overcome the shortcomings if the 5.56mm. About time I say. I think that they should just issue the SOCOM 16 and call it good. The M14 is plenty proven and men that train with weapons can handle recoil. I would rather bear a greater burden with marginally heavier ammo for that mighty firepower. But I am just an old fat Machinegunner. When I was getting off easy I was carrying a M60E3. Even my M2 barrels out weighed them.
  11. I believe that many generations of Marines have worried that the "new Corps" would lose grasp on tradition and get soft. From what I have watched on TV, news reports, and talking to them, our heritage is in good hands. My pastors son is a Grunt, and has served in Iraq. He was talking with a family friend that was not a Marine, but had just returned from Iraq. He said that Marines are different. When fired upon it is common for them to run towards the fire. God Bless the Marine Corps.
  12. I read the article in Rifle yesterday. I bet it won't be long before we see one of them on this board. Someone will have to build their .416 Taylor a younger brother. I look forward to viewing yet another beautiful work of art that someone built in their garage.
  13. Those are cool looking gifts. What kind of hide are they pictured on?
  14. You will forever be his favorite cousin. That is a great looking rifle. I love maple. It can be a bit tricky to work with but it is worth it. Good work!!!!
  15. Would a construction crayon work? They are for sale at hardware stores for cheap. Or Grease pencil? Either one should not be too hard to clean off.
  16. Still funny to watch on the computer. At least he didn't get maimed or killed. Then it would not be funny. As Forest Gump always said, 'stupid is as stupid does'.
  17. Beautiful rifle. Great photography also. With the lighting it really shines like a diamond. Fantastic work!

    Barrel Length

Check this out. http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firearms/FAP...=17881&return=Y . A magazine recently did a story about short barreled rifles. It had this Ruger Frontier on the cover. It may have been G&A. The article talked about how handy a carbine is and its usefulness. There was some velocity loss but they had good handling qualities and good accuracy. I personally like short rifles, even if my M38 M-N rings my ears when I shoot at game. My Turk has a 21" barrel and I like its length and looks. Decisions decisions. Good luck and enjoy your project.
  19. That is going to be one sharp looking rifle! I don't see a thing wrong with that bolt. I would be more than happy with it. Working on a piece of wood with that much grain is likely to be exasparating. I understand doing things yourself. Heck, I don't even like help cooking supper. I may not have given myself an A grade on all aspects on my single Mauser project, but I will do better on the next one. I believe I am too stubborn and cheap to let anyone help, other than a bit of working with my Dad (shop teacher) on the welding of my bolt. He kept me going in the right direction. Now that we are older we don't even fight when we work together. Keep showing pics. I will keep looking at all of your projects and learning what I can.
  20. I was going to get a Turk for Christmas, but my cousin with the C&R said that he can't find any. Any suggestions? I need one to build that Tweed. My spare coin has recently been more like pocket lint. I have to use that holiday thing for some good use. Lack of projects is not from lack of want, hahaha.
  21. I used Speer 200grn and H4895. The load worked good on a deer, but never got a chance at a bear. I also deer hunted with 170grn Hornady RN. I finished a 90lb buck fawn we chased for 2 1/2 hours. The bullet passed from jaw to hip. When the bullet struck it did a 180 degree back flop. Won't do that again. My daughter was proud of her deer, but declined on field dressing. My mess I cleaned it up and saved the meat.
  22. Congrats on a successful season. I get excited over all of them. I love it.
  23. Geneolgy is some cool stuff. It helps to know where you come from. My natural family was not here in Minnesota from Finland before the turn of the century. My adopted family started in Tunn Tavern, PA, in 1775. I have always loved history. I hope you find the long lost cousins. I have met some distant ones. I found it interesting how alike we were.
