  1. We had plenty of exchange students in similar circumstance at my high school. Most came around after a few weeks. Most knew some english but were too shy to use it wrong and be embarassed. Once they found out that we weren't the French(made fun of them) they made friends and enjoyed their stay. It will get better for both of you.
  2. Love the pic. The M2 .50 machinegun was my thing. Nothing like knowing how to use one. My Brothers gun position in Iraq had a sign. It read " One way tickets to allah, punched here", in arabic and english.
  3. Idaho residents have it made. Their licenses and tags for elk are around $42, as opposed to non residents that pay around $550. WOW! Plus the million gallons of $3 gas it would take to get there from Minnesota. I would love to go out there, but the bank hasn't said it was OK yet. I should have gotten a career that included vacation time. The west is the best.
  4. I ate cat on the grill in the Philippines back in '90. It sure is good with that banana ketchup. Is eating them inhumane? I had dog trouble living in town. I asked the local police what to do after several complaints. These were dogs that were more than a little iffy with my kids. I was told off the record that it is very hard to locate a single shot, but more than one is easy. Now that is the kind of advice I can live with. I bet those poor kitty cats are thirsty. I bet they would love a little Prestone Koolaid.
  5. I've always wanted to go "from Phoenix Arizona all the way to Tacoma". Someday............ The lottery deal would be tough. We had a lottery for antlerless tags in MN for years. Now we can buy OTC bonus tags. I would still rather hunt out west, even as much as I do love it here. My father-in-law took an cow elk last year up on the (Moggion?) rim last fall. He didn't fare well on the draw this year either.
  6. That is a sharp shootin' iron.
  7. The regular bullets are probably just fine. So is the Winchester .30'06 I always used for deer hunting. I guess I just need something to tinker with. I guess that is what makes this stuff so fun.
  8. I might be thinking wrong about this, but I think the oddball is operator error. I wish I had the patience to wait between shots. I have improved a lot with doing more shooting. I did not bed this gun as it fit the original stock so well. I also so far like the 2 stage trigger. Anyone have any experience with the 180g Barnes bullets? http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a20/usmc0...0grainSpeer.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a20/usmc0...grainSierra.jpg This has been about as good as it gets for me with H4895 and Varget with the BT bullets. These were the bullets I wanted to work. I was hoping for better before trying the Accubonds for bear hunting. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a20/usmc0...180NoslerBT.jpg At 225 yds very hot day, no waiting between shots http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a20/usmc0...ips225yds-1.jpg
  9. I have been getting good groups with 175g sierra (H4985 & Varget)and 200g Speer bullets (H4895). 3/4 to 1" groups at 100 yds. I have not been able to get accuracy with 180g ballistic tips. This is with a Turk sporter 21" barrel. Any suggestions appreciated. I have loaded long and short OAL.
  10. He sure doesn't look very friendly. It would be a cool hide for the wall.
  11. The carriage bolt method worked very well for me with my barrel shortening project. I found that a 1/4 inch bolt worked better than a 3/8 inch bolt. I used valve grinding compound that I got for cheap at Napa. I will use it again. I know that Brownells sells a lap for this purpose.
  12. Thanks fellas. This is my present favorite rifle. I look forward to future projects and more favorites. 8x57 is an awesome round. I look forward to hunting with a rifle I worked on and ammo I assembled. Thanks for all of the help.
  13. I finally took some pics. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a20/usmc0...rtedTurk2-1.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a20/usmc0...rtedTurk1-1.jpg 5 shots of 175grn Sierras, full-length sized, 49grns Varget, 100yds, 90 degrees no cool down period. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a20/usmc0...49grnVarget.jpg 180grn BT 225yds. Could be better. 5 rounds 90 degrees no cool down. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a20/usmc0...ips225yds-1.jpg My groups are starting to improve now that I discovered my scope was loose. My Father-in-law smacked his nose and brow and moved it in the rings. Not much bleeding due to rubber ring on ocular.
  14. I learned to hate the media in the first 'Gulf War'. When the SEALS landed during a tactical mission, only to meet flashbulbs, I learned that hype is hype. The best thing they could have done is to spray them all. Thin the herd. Most media types are not worth the small package of toilet paper that comes in an MRE. They want a name, irregardless of whether they observe OPSEC or any other guidelines. The media is the imbedded enemy. America can't take the truth. War must be Hell. I can't say it is, as I have been close enough to taste, but not close enough to qualify
  15. Sounds a lot like Utopia to me.
  16. Are there any pipefitter jobs to be had over there? I am glad you had a good time with the kids. That Idaho trip would be awesome.
  17. I killed a lot of pigeons and a few larger snowshoe hares with my old crossman 760 (500fps)as a kid. I think those breakopen or side cockers with 1000 fps would be awesome.
  18. It sounds like a day that you will remember forever, well worth the drive. I could use an interesting adventure, haven't had one in ages.
  19. I didn't feel that anyone was better than me when I got out, but for a long time I felt like I was 4 years behind my peers. When I became a foreman I suddenly understood the advantage I could not have gotten in school. Coming home on leave I saw friends starting careers and beginning their lives, buying houses and cars and such. I don't know about now, but E-3 pay didn't go too far when I was one. I was happy for my friends with homes, vehicles, and toys, but they were out of my reach and I felt a bit left out. After spending 10 long months on ship, most of it waiting for the beach landing in Kuwait that never happened, my brains were scrambled eggs. I bet it is much harder to feel your place at home when you have been gone much longer and spent time in far more dangerous places than a smelly old ship.
  20. The world is an unfriendly place to both of us. The difference is Israel doesn't expect to make/buy friends. When your response to being over-run is nuking yourself, you have a different view of your unfriendly neighbors and do more to keep them in check. They are not afraid to swing Teddy Roosevelts big stick.
  21. Fresh cut hay attracts rain, just like tornadoes are drawn to trailer homes, around here anyway.
  22. A Marine Brother of mine said that the rules of engagement were troublesome. He didn't say that they could only return fire. My take on it was that they could engage an enemy carrying weapons as long as it was with personal weapons, just not crew served weapons like machineguns. Silly! He said that they had a bunch of trouble with the 'Hajis'(Iraqi forces). He said that they had times when maneuvering into position against the enemy, the Iraqis that were with them would change frequency on their radios and warn those enemy forces about what was going to happen. He also said that they would block Marines from forceably stopping vehicles trying to drive through checkpoints. On several occasions they shoved them out of the way to disable those cars with fire. One car they disabled belonged to a 'cleric' with his family and he thought he was above the rules. He ranted and raved at them even with many weapons trained on him. I personally believe I would want to stop before a checkpoint that was heavily armed, rather than risk my life and family and get my car shot to pieces. They engaged vehicles like that on most patrols. He was not impressed with the Iraqis in any way shape or form. He said that they weren't even trustworthy as interpreters, as you couldn't expect them not to give information to whoever they encountered. The society there doesn't live under the comfort of having set rules. Everything is negotiable. If you don't feel like stopping at a stop sign, don't. If your neighbor is an insurgent, don't tell anyone as he might get killed. He is your Arab brother. He might be keeping your country from becoming a stable peaceful home, but don't tell. If I lived in a war torn place my troublesome neighbor might find allah with my bullet. The Marines there are doing an amazing job in my opinion. They have never been known as great 'peace officers'. They were made to seek out, close with, and destroy they enemy. I doubt I could have stayed out of trouble.
  23. That is a classy looking rifle.
  24. You guys play big-time. I am a mouse amongst giants. I hope I get this involved while there are still surplus guns around.
