Frank46, I believe if you do any tig welding on the receiver, it will need to be heat treated. I could be wrong, but from all the posts that I've read in the past, any welding affects the temper. Do you have to blue the unit? Have you considered using an applied coating? It would require blasting all metal parts, then preferably parkerizing the metal for protection, then filling the pits with epoxy and sanding smooth, then airbrush the coating(I use Duracoat) to your satisfaction. You can bypass the parkerizing if desired, but it's easy to do. Duracoat is far more durable than any bluing and nearly impervious to marking after a few weeks for total drying. You can handle it after a few hours of drying. I know it's heresy to talk about coating Mausers to a few, but for me, It is the only thing that I use due to the cost of bluing. It is a viable option. I'd hang that action with the barrel down and douse the action/barrel with Kroil for a few days before trying to wrench the barrel loose. It usually makes a big difference in the project. Spiris

tinkerfive, I'm thinking that you do not reload and guess that you used factory loaded 123-125 gr HP bullet. They do make heavier SP bullets in that caliber and maybe you can try some of them for accuracy if you can find them. They should perform much better on deer. It will be much like the 150gr 30-30 loads that the '39 is close to in performance. The 30-30 has been doing it well for over a hundred years. I revisited your H&R post and realized that you have a .308 barrel (from 30'06) which would be great if you reloaded. A nice 150 gr ballistic tip bullet would be the cat's a$$. 2200-2300fps is easily attainable out of that round with that weight bullet. Congrats on your successful hunt this year, and many more. bubbamauser, I don't think anyone is saying it cannot be done. Are you telling us that you can load, a regular 180 grain factory 30'06 Core-lokt in your magazine, without any interference? I for one would like to see that. My point is that in using an intermediate action for 30'06, you have to compromise somewhere. IMO, that action can be put to better use in selecting a cartridge that better fits that length action. It's along the same lines as today's modern short actions that cripple the larger rounds that they are chambered for because no matter what, the COL has to be maintained because of the short magazines. The powder space is compromised and advantages are lost. I could care less what people do with their milsurp conversions, as we all have our own ideas of what we want. I'm only offering my opinion. IMO, it's a waste of time and energy, unless you want to use 110gr RN in your '06. As donmarkey points out, after a lot of work, it's still a marginal fit for the 63mm case and you'll have to limit your loads due to deep bullet seating. I'm sure you know the 308 based round's a near perfect fit for that action. You'll be much happier being able to seat your bullets out and take advantage of the extra powder space. A 260 Rem or 7mm-08 besides the 308 or even a 6.5x55 would do that action justice. How about a sweet 6.5x284? NCsmitty

AZ, the PPK styled Polish 64 looks to be a nice pistol. Looks real compact. I just hate the oddball 9MM Makarov cartridge requiring .364 bullets. That's what has kept me from getting one of the C&R CZ-82's that J&G has offered. Too bad someone doesn't offer a standard 9MM replacement barrel for these weapons. Did you see any of their VZ-24 rifles? Just wondering what condition they are in. I'd hate to get one if they're pitted under the wood, as some are. Thanks for the pics. Spiris

That's a nasty cracked case, and you are lucky not to have got some brass particles back at you. Not to nitpick, but there is no such thing as "mildly corrosive". It's either corrosive primed or not. I prefer to treat most surplus ammo as corrosive for sake of the rifle. You just never know for sure unless it's recent manufactured 223 or 308. Spiris

I'll be darned littlecanoe, it is a Blackhawk. I thought they only made the 357 Max in Super Blackhawks. You'll have to give your dies a visual to see if it has a long enough sizing barrel to accommodate the long case. My Lyman does. I use the 180gr psp Hornady Single Shot Pistol bullet under 22gr. of Rel-7 powder. H-110 and W296 will give slightly higher velocities possibly, but only exacerbates the erosion problem being ball powders. Most loading data will be for TC's but will be fine in your gun. Your choice of XTP's should be good too. Seating and crimping will be trial and error at first with your current dies, but should be doable, just back out the seater in the press. Case trimming hasn't been an issue for me, but I do have a Lyman trimmer if needed. Some loads listed on Ammoguide can get 2000+fps with 180gr in the 14" barrels. I have had 357 Mag, 41Mag and 44 Mag single action revolvers and know the "recoil roll" and know that good replacement grips make a positive difference. My concern is the good chance of heavy pitting under the wood line from the horror stories that I have heard. I was lucky in doing a FTF for my VZ-24 rifle a couple years ago, and able to see that the rifle was in great shape. The scrubbed receiver was in excellent condition with no pitting. Got it for an even $100 and sold the stock for $24. The barrel bore was pitted badly and provided me with a practice barrel for threading SR Turks. J&G has the VZ's and the Brazilian '08's, and the Brazilian is probably even more prone to having a pitted receiver. Spiris
