  1. I do not have the resources to become a life member. What I do is let my yearly membership expire and eventually they will send a plea to have me rejoin @ $25. They emailed the offer a few days ago and I re upped for another year. Spiris
  2. The 350 ReMag is basically a 35 Whelen in a short belted case. I had one back in the day, in a 600 Remington with the 18.5" barrel and laminated stock. I sure wish I had kept that one. They are worth beau coup bucks now. Spiris

TOM F, you will have to have your bolt altered for proper clearance for scope mounting. Some on this site do that, and do it well. Some new commercial bolt bodies are available on Gunbroker, another option. A new trigger is important, several available, some with and without side safeties. There are many options to make the rifle the way you want it. You already know about Sporter Express for ideas so we await your decision. The conversion will not be cheap, but will be very satisfying knowing that you have resurrected a classic design. Spiris
  4. Not accurate enough with the old barrel? I'm sure you are aware that you can get good original or German k98 take-off barrels to replace the old one. You can also go mild to wild in cost for aftermarket military contour barrels. That's your call. A good place to look is www.sporterexpress.com. Maybe someone here has something that you can use. Good old rifle, good luck. http://www.sporterexpress.com/ Spiris

    K98 Action

Here's one load of many listed at Ammoguide, of which I'm a member. There are a couple with even higher vel. listed with 120gr. 130's @ 2800+ 140's @ 2700+ 120 Nosler Accurate AA-3100 6.5x55 Swede Charge VEL Energy BL 50.0gr 2970 2351 24.0" This load was developed using Nosler pointed, soft-point, boat-tailed bullets. The velocity measurement is by chronograph. Norma cases and Federal 210 primers were used in development Spiris
  6. If you can't find your camera cord, I suggest getting a cheap usb card reader. Providing your camera has a removable data card, nothing could be easier to use, and it cuts down on the wear & tear & batteries on the camera itself. Have a great day! Spiris
  7. Welcome 406pat. It is indeed ambitious but quite doable. The triggers are a little tricky, but they are solid firearms. The 7.62x54R is a potent round and can be quite accurate. Please keep us informed and pictures would be good. Spiris

    K98 Action

The 6.5x55 fits in that niche between the 243 and the 30-06. It's high BC accounts for its ability to deliver accurate, deep penetration that belies its size. In a K98 action, it can be loaded a bit hotter than the 96 actions, adding another dimension to a superbly designed cartridge. It has my vote. But any of the rounds you mentioned should feed reliably. My second choice would be the 270 Win. Spiris
  9. flaco , I've been around this site for 2-3 years and I'm aware of your political views. I guess about the only thing we have in common is the love of firearms and shooting. I'm not surprised by your endorsement of the two authors that you suggest for reading, as they regurgitate the same crap that we have come to expect from the liberal elitists. The liberal view of the world suggests that we need to be cared for and they have the answer. In reality it's more like "do as I say, not as I do". Our very existence as a country rests on winning the WAR on terrorism, that is a truth. Our economy rests solely on the price of energy, yet the liberals really do not want to tap our own resources to reduce dependence on foreign oil. They want us to cut back and conserve while they do not want to inconvenience themselves because of their elitist attitude. We middle class, as a rule, cannot afford a $40,000 solar grid array to reduce our electrical usage. My real beef is their plans for the redistribution of wealth to satisfy their plans for a massive increase in government. The government cannot create jobs, it's the small and big businesses that do that. You know the proposed massive tax increase that's planned by the Democrat's candidate will cause more businesses to leave the country. Remember liberalism is socialism in camouflage. Ah, global warming, many liberals blame the Evil USA for this phenomena. I'm more inclined to believe that we run in cycles of warming and cooling and this has been believed and proven by many scientists. Actually another "little ice age" is coming in the near future. But ALGORE has made a lot of money talking about it. What a joke he turned out to be. I thank God every day that George W. Bush was President on 9/11. He has protected this country in spite of the liberals. At least his legacy won't include oral in the Oval Office as is B. Clinton's. I also think as you age, your views on life change and unless you have more money than brains, your liberal views, indoctrinated in your youth, will fade away. I confess that I actually voted for J. Carter, probably the worst President ever, but we live and learn. Spiris

    K98 Action

TOM F, retaining the same bolt face and generally avoiding feeding problems, the obvious choices are 25-06 Rem, 6.5x55 Swede. 270 Win, 280 Rem for deer family game. If you want a heavier loading then 338-06 or 35 Whelen. The magnum loadings, as stated, will require more work to function properly, but may be what you want. You did not mention what you want to do with this particular rifle. Will you hunt with it and/or punch paper? Welcome to site. There's a lot of good information floating around here with knowledgeable people ready to help you. Spiris
  13. I almost ran out to hug a tree! I appreciate God's Country too, but kinda scary that there's fanatic people like that in our society. Spiris
  14. God's comfort to all experiencing upcoming surgery. I empathize with you as I had a total hip replacement back in 1979 due to a motorcycle accident. I worked for the next 21 years because "when the going gets tough, the tough gets going". Spiris
  15. Palin has rejuvenated the MCCain campaign. She possesses more credentials as VP than Obama does as the Presidential nominee. I was absolutely thrilled with her choice because she is a firecracker. Biden does not have a chance in a debate with this "barracuda". She looked great in her videos firing her rifle too. Spiris
  16. Sorry about your firearm's woes, Doc. Cool on the laser level! I have some background in metal properties because I worked with it daily at the job that I retired from, and know that the softer aluminum, also generally cheaper, will not cut cleanly with your Chex maker and often leaves an uneven burr. Eventually the soft stuff will leave some galling in the barrel because i often had that problem with buildup on the punches in the 56 station CNC punch press that I ran. The problem with the harder aluminum alloys, t1, t3, t6 is that they will cut cleaner, they also will have a tendency to be harder to form, and often crack in doing so. 2024 alloy has the extra malleability due to the addition of copper, but the price begins to go against you. And copper foil or sheets, forget it. Unless one can come across some cheap surplus stuff that works, it's almost better to shoot harder plain base cast bullets. Continue to persevere Doc, you may hit on something that will benefit all. HMMM...I wonder how something like railroad board paper that measures .017-.022 would work, formed and paper glued to the base similar to the old paper patched bullets of yore? Probably too much trouble.
  17. Priceless information! Spiris
  18. I was surfing for chamber adapters and came across this. I had no idea they were into these. I've been mulling over an chamber adapter to fire 7.62x39 in a Mosin 7.62x54R. I might be able to make one on my mini-lathe. http://www.lothar-walther.de/html/212.php Spiris
  19. Karl, these rounds are produced by the millions and I doubt that most hold the tolerances necessary for 200 meter shots. I know its fun to try to hit targets at that range but the round is anemic at that range, and a tenth grain difference in powder or lead will show up big time. A 100 yd grouping is more appropriate for the 22LR and that's stretching it for the average rifle. I have probably 30 different brands and styles of 22LR ammo that I have tested in my two rifles and each likes different ones. You have a fine accurate rifle and you just have to live with limits of the cartridge. Spiris
  20. Kroil is real good if you let it work for a while. You won't get instant gratification. I soaked my VZ-24 action every couple days for three weeks. A little tap on the wrench spun it loose. I've been soaking my M48 action every 4 days for a month or so. I just haven't had the time to try to remove the old barrel. Just hang it barrel down and let the oil work into the threads. Is this a original M70 sniper? Spiris
  21. I believe all Mausers run .055-.060 as a standard projection. Maybe someone has different #s for your 93. Dumb question maybe, but you don't have pistol primers in the cases by chance do you? Just verify the projection dimension first and go from there. If you have a vernier, measure from the bolt face using the vernier stem. If too long, take the firing pin out and grind or file the excess from the striking end, finishing up with a nice rounded end. You should be able to check your dimensions by holding the firing pin manually in the bolt without having to totally reassemble. Spiris
  22. Being the frugal guy that I am, I have used nothing but Bold triggers on all my conversions. That's four, with one being a side safety model on my 270 Win. with Remington barrel on a Turk action because the used stock that I bought had the slot for it. Only one had a tiny bit of creep which I had to adjust. All my Mausers have scope offset positive lock safeties for the firing pin, the budget type with standard shrouds. I have been very pleased with performance of the Bold triggers. For those who can afford the high priced trigger units, I'm sure you'll be happy too. Spiris
  23. Glad to see you're back into it Doc. Hope to hear more of your adventures in reloading. Spiris

    Brazil Bolts

Is this receiver the one that's going to be a 338-06, and Brenden has purchased a reamer for this project? If so, then why talk about the bolt fitting for headspace or not? It hasn't been reamed yet has it? What am I missing here? Or are we talking about another receiver or just 98 bolts in general? Spiris
