I really like what you did with the rifle. The stock looks very nice!

 

How long is the barrel you put on it?

the barrel is 21"

I'm almost finish now. I forged and shaped the bolt handle, drilled and tapped it for bases and now all I need to do is install a low safety and touch-up the bluing on the reciever.

I think it will be a pretty handy little sporter

Thanks, I have a couple that I have already pulled the barrels on so it sounds like I just drill all the way through. That also means I don't have to fool with using a bottom tap, I can just use the taper tap on all the holes. the thing that had me second guessing is that on the Wagner website he says not to go all the way through on the front holes, but I guess he's refering to instances where you don't remove the barrel.

I just bought a wheeler engineering Fixture to d&t mauser receivers for scope bases. The instructions are pretty straight forward, except it doesn’t say how deep to drill the holes in the front receiver ring. So how deep do I drill the holes?

I mostly lurk around here trying to educate myself, but I thought I'd share a project I'm working on.

Note: No collectable mausers were mutilated during this project

I was going through some of my odds and ends last weekend and decided to try to cobble together a little .257 roberts with the stuff I had on hand. I had a Turk 98 action with a satin nickle .257 roberts barrel installed, several military trigger guards and a beat up Laminated German military mauser stock. Most of the work was slimming up the trigger guard and reshaping the stock, but I ended up with 6lb 13oz sporter that if nothin else is unique. I still have to forge the bolt and reshape it, finish removing the stripper clip hump and D&T for scope bases, but it should make a handly little deer killer:

Morgansboss, I certainly saw nothing offensive about your post.

I posted the pic of the lever release guard just to show an example of what it would look like on a military guard. The one I had was on a Westernfield sporter, and the lever movement was stiff enough that an accidental opening would have been nearly impossible.

I used an argentine 1909 hinged unit on my last project mainly because I like the way they look.

Just a few days ago I sent a VZ 24 barreled action to Skaggs gunsmithing to have a .257 roberts barrel installed. I did a thread on the entire project here:

Here's the excerpt about Mr Skaggs:

Packed the rifle and shipped it priority mail on Nov 3rd to Skaggs gunsmithing. I got a call on Nov 8th from Mr Skaggs to inform me that my rifle was done and being shipped, and I received the rifle back yesterday, Nov 15th. That's an 8 business day turnaround back to my door!! Wow!!

I am not a machinist or a gunsmith so I have no way to do critical measurements, but the work looks excellent. The crown has been recut to a target style, and the barrel has an excellent looking ".257 roberts" stamped on it.

Needless to say he'll be getting more of my business.
