    Barrel vise

$0.02 I use a home made barrel vice somewaht like the wheeler , but, made of heavier stuff. also hardwood blocks [unk. except they are not oak which I feel is too course grained and therefor splits under preassure] then two small strips of 150 grit sand paper on ea. block against the bbl. I use a 3 foot cheater on the breaker bar to tighten the bolts on the bbl vise, and pull for all i'm worth and then pull somemore. Have not had one slip if tightened properly [? pull somemore] Used to use a hydraulic press but now feel that with 3/4 in. bolts and a cheater, I can clamp abt as hard. It leaves the barrel reuseable, but, may need to steel whool and perhaps touch up blue. I also believe in a good whack! to get things going ... after you can do chin-ups on the action wrench... Good luck . MV
  2. Fritz: Just tried the chilean 95 bolt in a 93 and it goes fine.... soooo I would say it "should" work. Of course it will not interchange the other direction, 93 [unmodified] bolt in a chilean. I will measure if ya need it , but can't do it till tomorrow , and I don't get online alot now since we have been w/o power since thursday... Lighting is limited currently, but I will check online sometime tomorrow... Geeeze and they think flooding is bad,,,, people should try no power and abt 0 deg. F for a few days!!! MV
  3. Z probably won't toot his own horn but... http://www.mausercentral.com/crestpitremoval.htm I'll do it for him... This was already linked on the old boards but perhaps was lost.... Never enough information as far as I am concerned on how others are accomplishing their projects... thanks to ya Clemson for sharing your method also.. MV
  4. Thanks Z , it looks like it is flatter - farther out. When ya do the 93, please post a pic as I am very interrested in how it comes out, Got one I would consider modifying.. If ya don't wanna post it just drop a PM... Thanks again... MV
  5. Z; Is it designed to protrude, such that you won't notch the right side of the action or is that an illusion [disallusion]?? MV

    Great plan.

Fritz... look at yer 1916 carefully, Mine uses a flat bottom bolt like a 93, in fact a round bolt from my chilean 95 won't go at all Yep just double checked... Chilean 95 ... round 1916 mex... flat. and my 1916 is matching.. I think I saw 93 bolt for sale somplace... I'lll let ya know. I'm gonna screw it back together and put a chamber adapter in it [7.62X39] and let the youngest boy shoot the tar out of some cheap surplus ammo... MV BTW the shoulder would have to be moved on mine to get the barrel back to the inner ring, on the k.kale.... just tryin my hand at humor abt the rework turks...
  7. I have to agree that in this instance money probably does buy happiness... Don't loose sight of the fact that any "buzz box" will cut very nicely indeed, it's just hard on the rod supply. I like what fritz said abt the small rod and the buzz box, it does a fair job. If you have an ac machine now,, don't forget abt. the carbon arch torch, I hate 'em, but some folks are darn good w/ em. Personally I much prefer a good oxyacetelene [sp] torch set with a welding handle [i like the smallest ones cause they are not so unweildy], as well as having a good ole buzz box. But I'm just a poor dumb [old] farm boy. MV

    Great plan.

Yes what you say is true... I'm kinda a stickler abt "cosmetics" sometimes but it is feasible. Better than a 308 in a model 93 anyway, huh. MV

    Great plan.

Well I thought it was a no brainer... Got the barrel off of my 1916 [very clean 7.62] Was gonna put it on my Turk!!! Bummer the threads are only abt .565 and the shoulder is already nearly turned off... not enough left to take anymore... Oh well off I go.. but if you check even tho the headspace was OK on the 1916, as it was, how could it be safe w/ so much of the case head unsupported??? Well apparently it wasn't , upon measuring , the ring [of the receiver] seems to have been shortened also!!! No wonder it didn't fit the stock so good... too bad the turk reworked 98's aren't small rings,, I would have a real freak!!!! Good for a chuckle anyway I hope. MV

    Yee Haa!

Good job done... didn't lose too much either and I had zero probs getting here... MV
  11. Don't know nothin bout arisaka's... Rhinelander has the 45ACP and/or 45 win mag [my personal choice] for the small ring's as well as 98's... Seems to me the small ring is perfect for this, as the 98 action may be "overkill" for the low pressure 45's... opinions are worth what you give for em.... MV
  12. Seems correct however.... how will you get the neck length [of the chamber] correct? How abt the jct at the shoulder and neck?? Not that I know just a question. MV
  13. Can't help it...... carefull bout that burnin' rope method... the more it smokes the better it will look to ya........ Sorry could not help myself..... does sound like it would leave a neat look, thanks for the tip.
  14. Thanks guys.... As I should have known .. there are no shortcuts!!!! Besides I'm not uncomfortable w/ conventional stuff [#8's it shall be]... Appreciate the response. MV
  15. Found the "oversize" 6-48 scope mount screws in brownells' and wonder if anyone has used these. Specifically a friend brought over a nice small ring 7X57 sporter w/ some wallowed out mount holes. The stock screws sorta' half way grab but not stout.... "mushy" if ya know what I mean. Kinda like someone used too large a tap drill. Or should I just go to #8's and forget it??? Thanks... MV
