I never tried to make a tap, It's worth a try though. I only need one to chase out some threads on a receiver whose barrel was removed by action wrench that had too short off a clearance groove cut for the recoil lug and crushed the end of the treads.
-Don
I never have made a tap before either. I guess you would have to harden the tap after cutting the threads, and make sure you don't make it to brittle. You think dipping it in kasinite would be enough to do the job?
If it was me, I guess I would buy the tap and call it a tax deduction on the shop.
Good luck on making the tap and let me know how it turned out.

$20 for such a small tap? That's crazy! Wonder if there's a metric equivalent we could find for cheaper or simply another source?
I thought it was high too. You could alway retap to diffrent threads.

I am so sick of Law & Order. It seems like it's on USA an TBS 24/7. I still get a kick out of MASH.

if you click on the link i gave you guys, you will see that they have cleaned the whole place up. it is no longer the "good old days" with open shooting everywhere. they have a real nice setup now with a paved road right up to the range and shooting stations. even has a rangemaster! nice place! and not the "wild westside" it was,

Is this place wheelchair accessible?

Sounds good to me. I bet it will be hard to do though because everbody is all over the USA and finding a location that would suit everyone would be hard to do.
Good luck with this, you have my vote.

UPDATE;
If you thought you could hear somebody cussing way off in the distance, it was probably me!
I applied 2 part epoxy to the barrel and wooden blocks, re-clamped, then waited 2 hours.
After tightening the vise a lot more, I tried it but, the barrel broke free from the blocks right away.
Next I brazed a couple 1/16" steel rods lengthwise to the barrel, they stripped out the wooden blocks.
After that I went to work on another project
I think this vise will probably work if I replace the wood blocks with steel or aluminum ones with bushings.
I don't remember what I paid for this thing, but with shipping to Alaska I've probably got more than $50 into it, so I hate to give up on it to quickly.
Thanks for all the input. I'll let you know how things work out.
Kenny
I would imagine that several folks use wood blocks, but personally think they suck. I use 1 1/2" aluminum shims and a homemade barrel vise. I use a air powered 20 ton jack and two 1" bolts to hold my barrels in place. I have yet come across a barrel that I couldn't take off (knock on wood). I think once you go to steel instead of wood, I bet you will have better luck. Oh ya, don't forget the rosin, it does a real good job as well.

Have you tried rosin? you can get it from Brownnells.

A bit tricky to use. The positive and negative vertical bar zooms you in and out. To go where you want you have to center where you want on the map before you click "+". Using the tab "hybrid" overlays state boudaries, cities, and streets. I found my house.
If you like that website, try this one http://terraserver.microsoft.com/default.aspx It has some cool Aerial Photos.

Their is nothing wrong in starting out on a mini lathe, it's a good way to start out and not costing you an arm an a leg. Your big expenses will be the tooling for the lathe. As you can afford it, buy good quality measuring tools and cutting bits. You can always do pistol and some rifle barrels, and you can tune most actions on a mini lathe. One other thing I would do, is buy some books to help you out as you go along. Once you get better with working on the machine you will want to upgrade to at least a 12x36 lathe.
Good luck

FC,

I am confused on what you are trying to do on a mini lathe. Roy, I know you said you were looking for something to go threw the tailstock, did you mean the headstock? (what's actually doing the turning). What Kenny has suggested is what I have used in the past on my mini lathe. I have done some threading on pre contoured barrels that will fit threw the headstock. It does take a lot of work to make threads on a mini lathe. I haven't found a way to turn threads on a unturned blank barrel. It only took me a few times working on a mini lathe before I jump off in the deep end and bought a 12x36 lathe, It made life and gun work easier and a lot more fun to do.
I hope helped you out
