have homemade vise and wrench that works very well. Didn't want to add cheater, it just felt to tight. I didn't compound it all the way down. I left about 3/4 of a turn to snug up. The rifle is turning out to be nice and light. The barrel is only 21 inches long but fat and makes the gun feel nose heavy. I want to thin it some.

Thanks again for the help. I am a custom wood worker by trade but am learning the metal work. My dad used to be very good at gunsmithing. He is 72 and not much help now. I will have to take a few pics of his work sometime.

Valve compound did the job fast. I will remember that trick. I did check threads with another barrel to make sure they were indeed right.

Having problems getting the barrel on my 93 action. I would say the barrel was a 30-06 take off set back and chambered for .300Sav.. I was told it was threaded for a SR. but I can't get it on my action. It will thread down till the last 1/4 inch easy, then locks tight.

The book I have says "12 threads per inch, V type 55 deg. pitch". In the pic, my caliper is set for a 1/2 inch. I count 7 threads. That would mean this barrel would have 14 threads per inch.

I can't find anyone around that has a SR barrel I can check the action with. I have run a pick around the threads in the action. They feel good with no gunk or rough spots. I hope from the pics someone can tell me if this barrel will work.....Thanks for any advise.

Never tryed any of the new light lead. 15 or more years ago my dad got his hands on some 50 or 55gr lead. They were awesome on Crows and Groundhogs. I use the .240 for groundhogs at 250-350yard ranges. The loads are right up to max for nice flat shooting. If I were to do alot of pd or target shooting I would back the loads down to increase barrel life.

The .240 and 6mm-06 are both nice hot little rounds. I might go for the 6mm-06 if I had to do it again. The Weatherby brass is very expencive but you don't have to make your own (not sure if anybody makes 6mm-06 rounds).

I did a .240 weatherby mag on a commercial FN98. Try some dummy rounds, if there are any hints of a problem then work on it. Nothing worse than a jam on a hunt

Friday I just got my 2 stocks ordered in May. Not Happy it took so long but was worth the wait. They are from Richards Microfit. They did a 1st class job on the inletting. I just pressed them in a bit to take a few pics. There are no gaps anywhere. Must fight urge to tap with a mallet and run to the range. I have spend days in the past getting an action in a stock. It shouldn't take more than a hour to get these to fit right. The 1st is of my daugthers Savage in .243Win. She picked the wild stock. Just click on the pics to enlarge.

The 2nd is my 93 Mauser in .300Sav. Again no gaps, just very little work for great fit.

The bolt on the 93M is the first one I have ever done. I also took the charger hump off.

I too am working on a rifle for my 13 y/o daugther. Got her a Savage 10fx in .243 but she likes

shooting my M98 in 243 better. Turns out I have a rollover cheek piece on mine. Kids a smaller heads

and a high cheek piece lets her look through the scope with comfort. If your daugther will be using a

scope, make sure she doesn't have to pick her head up to see through it.

My dad has a 98m action out to shaw for a barrel install....think they told him 10-12 weeks.

I think it is $60 to have it fit to your action. that seems a bit steep to me, since they make and are selling you the barrel.

if you end up in the $80 range, you might want to check out "Midway". They have 7x57 barrels for

$89.99. They are out of stock on the 6.5 barrels. Iam looking for a 6.5 myself, so if you find some
