  1. Thanks Don. I am the proud owner of a 1910.

Are we confusing Spanish 1916's with Mexican 1910's and 1936's ? My recollection is that Spanish 1916's are a mixed bag - possibly with and w/o vents. Unless I'm mistaken the bolt and receiver below are from a 1916.

  2. I ran across a scrubbed (standard length?) mauser sporter that had a barreled action - please help me guess its origin/identity. Of course we'll have to assume the whole barreled action is original and not a mongrel.

    Characteristics:

    • Belgian proof mark on 8mm barrel, serial number on barrel (E on top LG all within oval with crown), heavy pitting on barrel
    • Well executed notch in front receiver ring (perhaps to accomodate longer cartridge?) SN matches barrel
    • Very, very faint numbers on rear bridge perpendicular to side - can't make them out but might be SN because two numbers match, but may also be 308
    • Straight bolt handle
    • Smooth as butter

I wish I could've removed it from the stock to see other markings.

Perhaps we'll never know but I'm thinking it is an FN of some type. The unknown for me is the notch in the receiver.

  3. I've got a Carl Gustava (SP?) 1918 that i tried some time ago to get the barrel off of. I set my action wrench a little too tight and now the reciever has been smashed down just a touch to make the bolt a no go. I have lightly sanded inside and have gotton the bolt to go in about 1/4 an inch past the extractor collar. Sanding is going to take forever to get this thing to accept the bolt. Any thoughts or am i just screwed?

You've stated that the front ring is pinched, perhaps you've visually verified that. But thinking about this this from afar - is it also possible that your rails are no longer aligned with the front ring due to rotation or a change in the (perpindicular) angle of the rails to the front ring? I recently had some barrels removed and that seems to be the case for one of my receivers.

  4. "As to our culture as a whole I see the Church being refined and true Biblical doctrine being a growing focus. Having said that, our pastor was forced into resignation. The reason boils down to this statement made by one of the deacons, "you people focus too much on the word". That statement will tell you why we left. We left a SBC church, and while still in the SBC, we are more along the line of the Founders Movement and consider ourselves in line with much of the doctrine of Reformed Baptists. "

    Littlecanoe -

Is your new church an "Acts 29" church? see http://www.acts29network.org/

  5. That 1909 action would translate into some serious barter for gunsmithing services, Bob!

    Clemson :D

Good to know. I'll be in touch early next year - still enjoying your earlier work. I've got to score a few barrels and develop an overall "gun portfolio plan".

  6. That 1909 is worth $50 but I'll be nice and give you $100 for it. Serious though, I place more value on the original actions then the d+t ones. I would deduct 25-30% for the sporterizing.

    QUOTE (Clemson @ Mar 26 2008, 02:40 PM)

To take it a step further, a DWM-made 1909 Argentine action is better fitted and finished than virtually any commercial bolt action ever made. It is better than the FN Commercial Mauser, and arguably better than the pre-64 Winchester. To make an action like that today would cost an enormous sum -- easily $3000. To get that quality for $300 is quite a bargain.

What was the final price on those Argies?

    Clemson

$230 each, I would have bought them both at that price if I had the spare change. Actually if I thought they'd go that cheap I would have bid, I didn't expect it. Remember the bottom metal alone is worth $100+. The Brno went a little high for my tastes though.

You're busted Don. The above in italics is your comment from a thread titled Mauser Actions Available, 1909, VZ24 posted March 26, 2008. Good, clean fun and posturing but I'm not really looking to sell right now. I am, however, considering trading some for gunsmith services if I can find someone interested.

  7. What would be the approximate market value of the following unmolested, original condition actions ( receiver, complete bolt, triggerguard, trigger, action screws, etc)

    Unmolested

    • Argentine Modelo 1909 (excellent, no pitting)
    • Venezuelan FN Model 24 (very good, no meaningful wear, only mild pitting below wood line)
    • Chileno Modelo 1895 (dang near new with 7x57 carbine barrel and sights )

Approximate market value of other actions appropriately d/t'ed with forged or welded bolt handles ?

    • DWM 1908
    • early-40's bcd (Gustloff?)
    • VZ24 - 1937
  8. I think most of us gun folks go through, what I call the, wish I had syndrom. We start fresh out of school and married and start having families, and wanting this or that gun ,but can't have them because you've just bought a house, your car needs upgrading, then there's braces, and couple job changes. The wanting seems to get worse, and the list of wants builds. The years rock on,the job is steady and reliable, the house is paid for,and you have the nicest and best cars of your life,so you start buying a gun now and then because you can and not feel guilty. After 20 years of that, you finally clean out the closet, and wonder, what the crap am I doing with so many guns. That's my story any how. Jerry

I recall my recent post in the thread titled Winter Projects?

"It seems that recently I'm always focused on what's next to trade for or buy. My philosophy this winter will not be having what you want, but wanting what you have. I know that's not as much fun but that is where I am."

However, don't confuse having less with the right to have more, if desired.

  9.

What is conventional wisdom regarding purchasing a commercially semi-inlet stock versus providing to the same shop a well-fitted pattern of same stock? Said differently, and trying to keep all other factors constant; am I better off sending a stockmaker my well-fit pattern or ordering an inlet stock by name? Will duplication of my pattern be better than the generic pattern of the stock maker? Are the tolerances performed on pattern tighter than stockmaker's "generic" pattern?

I hope this is on-topic for this thread

  10. It is on consignment. I am interested, but would throw a lower bid at it. Fun to tickle the mind with, or lead to a future project if nothing else. Thanks.

I have some 350 Rem brass if anyone has a need. Mostly once-fired; perhaps some new. No longer have the Rem 700. Will check on condition and count if there is some interest. Would let go for a song or barter, plus shipping. Might even have the dies. PM me.

  11. is that oneof the ones from SARCO a while back? i have one im not going to use either

This came from a barreled action purchased from a gun shop in Idaho - don't know its earlier origins. Had a very nice action attached to it. Wasn't aware SARCO had sold FN 24 carbine barrels.
