  1. Today was the last day of our rifle season. Used the same rifle as mentioned above. Had a spike at about 80 yds. I muffed the shot hitting the deer in the spine. It was a huge hole. THe bullet came out where the ribs come away from the backbone. I could almost put my fist in the hole where the 185 came out. I was shocked to see that big of a hole, of course that is about the most bone on the deer.

  2. There is a lot of doubt as to how the 185 remmy works at mauser speeds. Well, the gun is a turk with the barrel cut to 19 inches. The load puts the vel at the muzzle at about 2350-2400 cronoed. The target was a 60 lb doe at about 170-200 yds. I hit the doe in the edge of the shoulder, it passed to the other side hitting part of the rib. THe exit hole in the rib was about 3/4 to 7/8 inch. All and all I was pleased with the damage and would say the bullet expanded well for what it had hit. I had been planning to change loads to go to something with a bit more horse power, but I think I stay with this.

  3. As to the rem. 185s it seems I read that it needs about 2400 fps to expand. I have only took 1 doe with the 185s. The shot was up hill and exited out the spine. The bullet seemed to done average damage for the bullets strike location. I would not be concerned to use it again on deer. I have only seen one bear killed. The bear came up in front of a deer driver, who put one round of buck shot in the bears rear. A stander finished the job with a 30-06 and 180 grain bullet. THe buck shot only made it throught the fat layer and just into the muscle. It is amasing the diffence between a bears body and a deer.

I have hear that bear run by dogs is greasy. Both of the ones I have helped butcher were great. My dad fixed some the other week and cut it thin after cooking it. It was GOOD. I hope your trip turns out well. How close to the Outer Banks are you going to be?

  4. THis thread is timely for me as I am planning the same job. I am going to use duracoat for a finish. So if blueing is not an issue, is plumbing solder OK? I got a roll of silver solder contain 45% silver what temp will that melt at? I am a roofer by trade and solder all the time with a gas fired iron and 50/50 bar solder. However, I have never used a torch.

  5. Somewhere I ran across a pic of a simple looking "machine" built just to remove humps. It had a pair of centers and a sliding table with screw feed mounted near a bench grinder. If I were to make up one I would set it up to be used on my 1x42 sander. Maybe not the greatest but to me better than free handing.
