  1. Your being there was probably a great comfort to her. You have my sympathy. LL
  2. If you know how many you have, you have too few. LL
  3. Pretty much any thing built on a X57 case would be nice. 7X57, 257 Roberts, 6mm Remington.
  4. I have tried O/A, SMAW and flux core wire feed. I really like the wire feed for building my decorative metal fences. For bolts, I will tack with the SMAW and then finish with the gas. The quick tack lets me get it out of the jig to work on. LL
  5. A friend died, and his estate is being sold off. I stood there and argued that the prices were too low, and I was told that they had thousands of actions to sell, and it would take forever holding out for a higher price. I bought a very nice Siamese complete for 75, and a Charles Daly standard bolt face action with what looks to be Argie bottom metal for 100. When I say dickering, I am thinking I have to dicker up. I did not feel too bad about the Siamese or the Daly as I understand they want to get rid of the stuff, and I don't have a use for either, but I thought the Mexican's were too cheap. I feel guilty buying them at the price they are asking. I have an option on the lot at the price they are asking, but I think I need to throw in extra cash. LL
  6. Seeing what z wrote, I should buy the lot. LL
  7. Don, I know where several and a box of parts are. I just am curious about where I should start dickering. LL
  8. What should I expect to pay for a clean, pit free action? I am thinking of my next build and think a lighter rifle might be the way to go this time. LL
  9. Pat , been there, done that. FC, Yes there is still such a thing. My daughter was paying her ex $1000 per month. LL
  10. I'm glad things are looking up for you. Take your time, you need not be in a hurry. Enjoy, relax and be darn grateful to have escaped with as little damage as you did. LL
  11. The Northwest normal is to chain the front. That said, if I have to chain my Ford, I chain the rear. I do not want the chains wopping on the through the fender well headers. LL
  12. A 38 has two gas vent holes on top of the receiver, and the 99 has one. The two are left and right of top center. The barrel tenons are different sizes and pitches. LL
  13. Bearing in mind that it has been a long time since I was drafted, and seniltiy is getting to be a permanent state, let me try expanding. Also, there may have been official rules about this stuff that we were not privy to, and the way we operated may not have been in complete alignment with those rules. They made me an MP. An MP of lower rank can in certain instances tell a higher ranking enlisted man what to do, but that authority went with job title, not rank. Within the MPs, we had many specialists, but I never saw a real corporal. Depending on where and what I was doing, we had either a desk sargent or a sargent of the guard for each shift. If there were not enough NCO's in the unit to provide complete shift coverage with NCOs, some specialists would be given temporary NCO status equivalent to their specialist rank. They may not have been the senior specialist on that shift, but they would be in charge, would assign duties to the other specialists and privates, and answer for the screwups. On the sites, the missle crews were run in the same manner. That is, a NCO was in charge of each shift, and if there was a dearth of NCOs, they made one temporarily. LL
  14. I do not know if I will get the wording exactly right, but here goes. A specialist does not have the same command power as a NCO. That is, a corporal is in a command position, while a spec 4 is in a technical position. An E4 of either outranks a PFC, but a Corporal would be able to order a Spec 4 about even if the Spec 4 had time in grade.
  15. That is a nice Garand. I really enjoy mine. Have fun with yours. LL
  16. Some of us are here to learn and share, others are here to make money. Make your own inferences as to which camp pushes hiring out the work. A few threads back, I made a comment about niche artists. I stand by that comment. A semi-articulate individual with a tig set up, and little other talent, lambasted me for stating that forged bolts had their place. My comments defending forged bolts and myself was deleted for no apparent reason beyond the niche artists defending one another. Do the niche artists do what they do well? Yes they do, but overall, they certainly are not cranking out guild quality work. You may be able to chamber with run out in the low tenths. You may be able to checker like Monte Kennedy. You may have a caustic bluing system that works like a jewel. You may be able to machine safeties, scope bases, barrel bands, and trigger guards. But, if you do not own a tig set up, you had better farm out having a bolt handle welded on, or the rifle will be less than pig poop. You are not going to get a whole lot of people to offer their help or opinion if they are going to be ganged up on by those seeking to make money off the members. It's a good thing I never thought life was a popularity contest.
  17. That should make for serious deer medicine. What weight bullet are you planning to use? LL
  18. A large portion of the votes for O were based on color, the economy, or dislike of Geo. That hardly constitutes a mandate. The economy votes are the ones that amaze me. The state of the economy, whether deserved or not, is laid at Geo's feet. While I feel sorry for anyone losing their house, I really do not think Geo is responsible for the individual decision to take out HELOCs for toys, to buy more house than one could afford, to sign for an ARM, etc.. What ever happened to personal responsibiltiy? And what I find amazing is that the idiots that got themselves in trouble now feel confident that they are able to make a rationale decision about who should lead the country. For the most part, the fumb duckers said to hell with the country and voted for their own pocketbook. There is a YouTube video floating around of a woman interviewed during the victory speech party. She has her two daughters with her and states that now she no longer has to worry about making a house payment or putting gas in her car. O is going to do it all for her. She said she never thought there could be such a wonderful man. Idiots one and all.
  19. Bases to take Weaver style rings are fairly easy to make. Use 12L14, as it will machine and blue nicely. Making them is a worthwhile project and the skills will serve you well in the future. If you can get away with making them into #8 holes, use an end mill and plunge cut. IIRC, it will be a 13/64ths end mill. Just check the end mill diameters against the diameter of the recommended drill bit for a #8 tap job. LL
  20. Not quite Frued. More like a life time of observing those around me. I had the opportunity to spend my entire adult life working in the same place, living in the same small town and observing the people around me. In some cases I have been able to observe 3 generations. It has been fascinating. LL
  21. You miss the point. He may be nothing and believe in nothing. His actions are anti gun, but who or what controls his actions? The point is a bit abstract, but it is not completlely beyond grasp. If someone was paying me to smash old dinner plates, I might care a fig less about the plates and a lot about the money. The currency of an adult child of an alcoholic is acceptance. LL
  22. I'm just thinking as I go here, but I do not think the problem with Obama is necessarily any of those that have been put forth. This is off the top of my head, I have not heard or seen anyone else put this forth, but I believe the problem with O is that he is the adult child of at least one alcoholic. He is not for change, he is the changling, having learned at a very young age to adapt to whatever situation the alcoholic parent put him in. Additionally, he learned to alter his view points depending on the mood or disposition of the person in authority he was in front of. Charming and glib but completely devoid of integrity, he will spout what he believes will gain him acceptance at the moment. He may not be racist, but if his racist pastor promotes racism, he is not going to disagree. He may not be for gun control, but if his handlers are, he is going to do what pleases them and gains him a modicum of acceptance and what he interprets as love. I have to think about this more, but if I am even a smidgen correct, how are we going to fare as he sells us out to gain acceptance by world leaders? Not well I venture, and if I am right, this is even more scary than if he really was a racist, Marxist etc.. LL
  23. Trying to get someone to remain friends is one of the rules in the cheaters play book. It is textbook cheater speak designed to make them feel better. I had to read no further to know that you had been replaced prior to getting the letter. The true facts are that none of this is about you. It is all about how broken she is. LL edited for typo
