  1. Does the barrel actually fit in the receiver?

Most folks visualize barrel threads as true, sharp "Vs". They aren't; they have flats (or rounds) both in the root and on the crest.

The actual thread engagement between the receiver threads and barrel shank threads occurs on the angled part of the thread, or the 60 degree part.

A barrel's threads could be considerably under the spec major diameter or SLIGHTLY over (provided they don't "bottom-out" on the flat (or rounded) receiver root. The actual plunge depth for either scenario should be the same.

If its a left hand thread it may be a 6.5 barrel for a norwegian krag. If so lets make a deal!!! Jim

  2. Well I did it my self!! Put the bugger in my padded vise and pulled one way then the other and BAM! it was apart and...............RUSTY!!!!!!! out came the Kroil,CLP,wire brushes, steel wool and 3hrs later! PRISTINE!! Put it back together(that was a little touchy but it worked) Took it outside and fired off a full 5 rds as slick as only a Krag can do,American or Norwegian!! Gonna get me a deer this Fall!!!! 6.5x55 is a great little(?) cartridge . All the best from up here JITC

  3. If its not bright after a bunch of elbow grease, its never going to be, unless you bore it out.

A dark bore is not the end of the world (or maybe more appropriately, the end of the barrel).

Dark bores can shoot just fine, but they usually require more maintenance (e.g. they foul more quickly).

I've had some good luck shooting 303 bullets out of corroded 308 barrels that weren't accurate with 308 bullets.

    303 bullets are 312" - 308" = 0.004" oversized.

I AM NOT RECOMMENDING THIS TO ANYONE.

To do something similar with a 6.5 mm using a commonly-available bullet you'd have to go to a 270:

    277" - 264" = 0.013".

Is this safe? I don't know. I would NOT try it.

What I would try is getting a cheap and commonly-available 270 bullet mold and try sizing down cast bullets until reasonable accuracy is obtained.

How would I do this safely?

First, I'd slug the bore. I'd do this by driving a piece of 00 buck lead shot down the bore from the breach with a brass rod.

Based on largest measurement of the slug, I'd add 0.002". Then I'd try to find a common sizing die that was that dimension. Chances are the measurement will be 0.268 and there are no sizing dies. If so, I'd get a Lee push-through at 0.243" and either ream it out myself or talk a guy going by Buckshot at http://castboolits.gunloads.com/ into reaming it out for me.

What I'm going to do is JUST leave it the way it is!! My arms are getting tired and there is no improvement. I'm reloading some 6.5 soon as dies get here and will see then how it shoots.

The guy I traded with never fired it so I have no reference points . Many thanks to all(the electro route looks interesting tho) JITC

  4. Just got a Norskie krag in great outer shape but the bore is Dark, dark, dark!! Its a 6.5x55. I've got the barrel filled to top with Shooter's choice for Overnite but I tried about 30 or 40 patches and it is still black. I used Kroil/J-B paste and still not clean.

More elbow grease or what? Any suggestions? Is this condition from corrosive ammo? I want to hunt with this but now I'm a little sceptical. Thanks from the CANUCK and greetings from up here, JITC

  5. Just got a Norskie krag in great outer shape but the bore is Dark, dark, dark!! Its a 6.6x55. I've got the barrel filled to top with Shooter's choice for Overnite but I tried about 30 or 40 patches and it is still black. I used Kroil/J-B paste and still not clean.

  6. HEY, IF THE 08 COCKING PIECE IS THE SAME LENGTH AS A K98 I THINK THAT YOU ARE IN BUSINESS, EA!

I'VE BEEN MAKING MY OWN VERSION AND MAKE THEM SLIGHTLY LONGER TO WORK WITH THE LONGER

COCKING PIECE ON THE 03 TURK. SO I'M THINKING THAT LENGTH / CLEARANCE TO THE COCKING PIECE

IS THE ONLY ISSUE. I DON'T ACTUALLY HAVE ONE, I MADE MY COPIES FROM A PHOTO THEN FIGURED OUT

WHAT THE DIMENSIONS SHOULD BE AND LENGTH TO CLEAR THE 03 Vs THE 98 WAS THE ONLY ISSUE I

    CAME UP WITH.

AS TO FITTING , IT WOULD BE LIKE ANY OTHER SAFETY THAT CAMS THE COCKING PIECE BACK EVEN IF

YOU WERE SWAPPING STOCK SAFETIES BETWEEN RIFLES .

    TINKER

Ok I'm done shouting now, I hope you heard me way up there.

Hey tinker that was loud and clear!! I'll try it soon, hope it works. I think it looks a lot "cooler" than the chapman 2 position swing safety. Jim

  7. Thanks to all for great info on the 25-06 magazine length. Now I know what one of the new barrels will be on my Midway order. Still thinking about the second project barrel though......................hmmmm!!!!!!!!

Well I just joined this august foum and am buildinga 9.3x62 on a 1908 DWM action that had a really poor Barrel. As a CANUCK I mostly hunt Moose ,deer, and black bear. I live on my farm in Southern Ontario where there are lots &lots of deer&bears. My moose hunting is usually a 16 or 18 hr. drive north. My major question is has anyone ever shot one?? What is recoil like? I'm told its milder than the 375H&H and 338 win. but more than a 35 Whelen. I reload everthing I own so LOADS are not a problem. I have brass, bullets, dies etc. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks JITC
