  1. Never thought they would ever bring this back. Check out the price, wow, alot higher than it used to be. http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=38870/Product/PROFESSIONAL_DRILL_JIG Brenden
  2. Well Well Well, looks like its Heath's big day. Hope you have a good one. Brenden
  3. IMHO, an 8mm mauser is the most versitle and prob. one of the best rounds ever produced. As for drop, well you get that with any gun. Look at the 30-30. It drops like throwing a car from a bridge. I hate 30-30's because of that slow moving chunk of lead they throw and how they drop a foot at 200 yards, untill I bought one this summer. That slow moving "rainbow" gun has become one of my favorite rounds and has smacked a few deer as well. 8mm is the same, its a great cal and one that deserves more respect. Like my dad always told me, when i talked about how flat my 7mm was, he reminded me that most shots are within 100 yards. Hes right, and a 22 mag would suffice at that distance. You've got a hell of a round. Brenden
  4. .257 bob would resolve any feeding issues, but a .250 &.300 savage are such classic rounds. I'm still trying to decide if i want a .250 or .300 on my 93. Most likely go the .300 route since I will have a .257 bob pretty soon. Have fun with that project! Brenden
  5. Hope they get everything straightned out and get you to feeling better. I guess I have been blessed with good teeth. Nine years of using tobacco, and never a problem one. Believe I should quit before my luck runs out. I believe that dentist,(i'm sure some may not be like this) like everything else in this world, love the cash. They kept working on my mothers teeth, a bridge here a root canal there, she finally got tired of being jacked around. She had all of her top teeth pulled and it was the best thing ever. She hates the false teeth with a passion, but they are better than nothing. Hope you get to feeling better Karl. Brenden
  6. That is an intresting read Ken. Thanks for posting that. Brenden
  7. I lean more towards .416, because thats what I dream of on a P-14/17, but if your gonna do a big bore.....458 Lott, or a .460 Weatherby Mag. 500 A-Square would be impressive if one could handle the recoil...600gr bullet at almost 2400fps with over 7000 lbs of energy...may be over kill for rockchucks tho. Brenden
  8. 98 and gun nutty have stated what imo is the best stuff out there. I think Kroil would cure a.i.d.s. lol. My mexican looked as bad if not worse than your turk. 30 mins of cleaning with Kroil, and it looks like it came off the production line. Brake cleaner (available at napa for $3) works well too. Brenden
  9. Good looking gun. Now for a list of questions...is the barrel SS? and what kind of finish do you have on the rest, kinda looks like parkerizing...Bolt looks very good as well, another example of your excellent forging jobs/shaping to the teardrop look? Very nice work. Should make a nice long range hog knocker. Well done! Brenden
  10. Wow. I can't believe i missed that one, great buy! I looked at a p14 saturday. It was a 7mm mag sporterized by Centrion? (sp?). Decient looking, but i'd rather have a non-molested gun to start with. Black syn. stock painted bubba camo. $250. Should have talked to the dude some more, I WANT A .416 REM MAG BAD!!! Build something huge on it Heath, well done. Brenden
  11. Happy Birthday Rob. Have a good one! Brenden
  12. Thank you Jeff. The stock came from sporterexpress.com , its a Boyds peper laminate. They are on sale right now for $72 (if they have any left in stock). They are a nice stock, but made for a barrel w/more meat towards the end, not a F14 contour A&B barrel (a F34 would have a better wood to barrel metal fit) Metal to wood fit everywhere else is very nice for a mass produced stock, surprised me. There is alot you can do with them to make them look good. I'm getting better at shaping but still have a long ways to go I just got it beded with steel putty about 1 hour ago, turned out very nice. I'm pretty proud of this one, my first complete diy. Brenden
  13. Hey Bill. I've Dura-coated a couple guns for myself and a few for friends. I like the gun blue. One can add a little more hardner to it and get a nice glossy looking finish. It doesn't wear that much at all, I coated the bolt on my 338-06 and that has cycled alot of rounds since i've done it. You guessed it, not really any wear. A couple topics before this, you will see my .308 build. That one is going to be stainless steel finish, I ordered it Thursday so we will see soon how it does. I'm a believer in dura-coat, and so is my dad and he first cringed at the idea of it. He loves it now. Just remember to get things very clean and give it a rough surface to adhease to (sand paper works well- a rough grit). To fill in pits or odd placed numbers/letters on an action, you can use anything (steel putty works). I just let mine air dry for a couple weeks and its good to go. All my coatings have gone on very smooth and lump free if I did my part of having it clean. Harbor freight has plenty of cheap air guns to use too (under $10). Its good stuff! Brenden
  14. Here are some progress pics. Still have to chamber (will happen with in a week or so) Finish Shaping stock/Clean up bolt some more. Dura Coat Some my not like my bolt style, but for me on this gun I didn't want a long sweep away from the gun. I like a bolt to be long and straighter than normal. Makes it easier for when I get excited on these WV eleven pointers and go shooting like crazy Brenden
  15. Happy Birthday Odiesdad! Brenden
  16. If you have access to an arc welder, then you are in luck my friend. I used to do some welding and then put it down for about five years. Started back up not too long ago and have welded 3 bolts. There is nothing to it. You don't need a tig, Take your time and keep the heat high enough, but not too hot and you will get good welds. The main thing is to clean all the slag out, you won't get pockets if you get it all out. A 7018 rod is ok. But, you can't beat a 3/32 6013 rod. 6010-6011's will work, but are a little harder to run (for me anyway). Just remember, angle your stub/bolt so that most of your weld is on the back side of the bolt handle. That way, if you make a mistake, its easier to hide . Good luck! Brenden The best way to start, and this is how I start before every bolt; get a piece of scrap metal and burn 5-6 rods, just running beads. This will get you going, getting you back into the niche, and you'll be fabing up bolts in no time.
  17. I'll be thinking and praying for ya tonight Jerry. I'm truly sorry for your loss. I wish I would have gotten that much time to spend with my Grandmother. I still get teared up thinking of losing my grandmother. Like FC said, they hold the family together. After she passed 5 years ago Christmas day, the other half of the family hasn't contacted us. We try to contact them, but they have no intrest. Such is life I guess. Again, sorry for your loss. Brenden
  18. I'm all for discounts if possible. I'm in for one. Brenden
  19. I enjoy doing my own work. Four years ago, I never saw myself doing things like welding bolt handles or reaming guns. Joined this group, made friends with my mentor Tanglewood, and damn the things I have done. I'm now welding my own bolt handles on, drilling and taping my own guns, and chambering. I'm still learning how to checker stocks, maybe a few builds from now. 2-3 position safties are next on my list. I don't have a mil, but i have determination. Some day I would also like to rust blue, but for now Dura-coat works. I never really did find things in life that I truly enjoyed or was proud of. After going down the wrong road in life, I found sporterizing. Wow, the enjoyment it brings, and the pride that it gives me. Its been a learning expierence, and one that is far from over. As long as i'm living, I'll be building. Doing my own work gives me pride, and also gave me that kick in the butt I needed. I can do anything if i put my mind to it. I love this hobby. Brenden
  20. Very nice Roger, you have reason to be proud of your grandkids. Heck, those are pretty dang nice bucks too. Congrads to them both! Brenden
  21. Thanks Bob. I realized last night that instead of jumping in with both feet, I need to forget what I think I know and read up on this a little bit more. Thank you for your advise, thats pretty simple and straight foward. I have a checkering gauge that came with my kit, I can't remember if mine is a dem-bart or what brand tools I have, I know they were cheap that way if I decided I didn't like trying checkering, I wasn't out much. Thanks again. Brenden
  22. Yeah its still country. That black guy that use to sing for Hootie and the Blowfish, Yeah now thats country! Yes and I'm being a smart ass. Brenden
  23. Thanks Guyes! I'll have to check that book out. Brad, you've opened up my mind, that cup is good for something other than drinking out of. Thanks!
  24. Thats a nice sporter Bob. Checkering makes her stand out. Very well done indeed. Now you've got me thinking about removing the schnabel on my 8mm sporter. Hmm..decisions. Maybe if I incorporate checkering into the stock, it just won't look like a plain jane penis shaped stock. Anyway, good job! Brenden
