my flatulent feathered friend, I urge you to keep all of china in perspective, not just the part the press tries to terrify us with. yes, china is wanting a blue-water navy, but they do have a right to one. and though their military is modernizing, it still has a long way to go. china is wealthier today than they have been in a long time, for sure, but that wealth is part of being a big country with lots of people in it. the per capita and discretionary wealths are still low by western standards. and the wealth they have still pales in comparison to the costs of modernizing their nation. that's why they are accepting foreign aid - they need it. they don't have the depth of technology or infrastructure to deal with a big earthquake like this. the fact that they are willing to accept foreign help should allay common fears about china's new status. they have a long way to go.
  2. some people swear by heating up the bore by shooting then applying kroil, and letting it sit for a bit. this is supposed to soften the fouling. the good news is it is fun (you have to shoot it) and easy (just slather the bore with kroil while hot). then brush it out and see what happens. the internet is full of stories of bores being shot clean. maybe it does happen.
  3. well the gripless types are not bad to fire, actually. and the non-detachable mag versions feel just fine. it is less than ideal, to be sure, but it works.
  4. CA law bans AWs 2 ways. one, by make and model, e.g., "Colt's AR-15." That was the roberti-roos AW ban of 1989, in reflex to the stockton schoolyard shooting by patrick purdey. he used an AK. next was the 1999 ban, effective in 2000, banning AWs my series and features. in response to Colt's selling the HBAR instead of the AR-15, the 1999 legislation (SB 23, IIRC) made all "AR- series" firearms AWs. understandable, but not easy to do. the other way was by features - semi-auto CF rifles could not have more than 1 eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil feature, those being detachable mag, PG, FH, and I think folding or collapsible stock. so, if the AK has no PG, it can be sold with a detachable mag. if the mag requires a tool to remove, ii is not "detachable," so it may have a PG. what you saw was a careful application of the current CA adminstrative laws. "PG" means a projection for grasping where the web of the hand can be placed acound, below aline formed by the top of the trigger. that's why some ARs had grips with a web from the stock to the PG. or the AKs had no PGs. or ARs had a mag release button you have to poke with a sharp tool (like a bulet point, a tool per the CA DOJ) to use. it's tricky line-walking pioneered by evan's in orange before they got their official AW permit. all the details above are from memory and if not perfectly accurate are close enough for internet work; I will be glad to be more helpful if you have any questions. ETA: The "series" ban was overturned by a court case, so the "AR- series" guns are no longer banned as AWs. that' why you can get an AR- or AK- style gun, if it does not say "AR" or "AK" on it, if you follow the eeeeeeeeeeeevil features rules.
  5. huh. I was at ontario and the only 8mm brass I found was 15/50, once fired WW. selection seemed thin, and the 1 set of 7.7 jap dies I found was $33. no 7.7 jap brass . still, $12 in the right pockets, not hollywood's pockets, and it's always fun.
  6. you may not need the stain. to see if you do, wet the stock with turp or mineral spirits. the dry wood will darken. if the stock tone looks good, then add the thinned blo in thin coats, wiped off. as to the model, remove the forearm and there should be a letter stamped in the front of the receiver. the folks at 24 hr campfire can help, they have a useful savage forum. BTW if the lever is blued the rifle was refinished. they were color case hardened originally.
  7. tell ya what. clean that stock with a mix of turpentine and boiled linseed oil, about 3:1. that and a bristle brush and a soft cloth. clean it once a day for a few days and you will be quite pleased. as always, try on a small area first.
  8. foaming bore cleaner, sweets, shooters choice, and mpro7, alternated. or outers' foul out
  9. I will do it if you don't.
  10. alrighty. using win vases, wlr primers, and win 150 gr psp bullets: 39.0 IMR 4895 2430 fps 1 moa 40.0 IMR 4895 2470 fps 1.4 moa 41.0 varget 2560 fps 1 moa 41.5 varget 2620 fps 2-ish moa 42.0 varget 2650 fps 1 moa these were shot at 50 yds, the 1 moa loads were all 3 holes touching. this was off bags and a bench, with a leupold 3-9 scope. chrono readings were at 10 ft. 4064 did not do as well, neither did 3031. this is in a 1940s 99R, 24" barrel IIRC.
  11. last night on jackass they dug a hole and covered it with branches so a guy on a riding mover drove into the hole. pretty funny. might be worth it to find that on youtube and show it to wifey....
  12. be advised that "correct grade" does not mean all original as left the factory. CMP staff takes "incorrect" rifles and restores them to "correct." nothin wrong with what they do, and a CMP rifle is probably the only circumstance where "corrected" will mean anything to a collector, but it is not "original." for history, get a service grade. they shoot, too.
  13. to clean such a stock always start with plain ol' mineral spirits. BBQ lighter fluid is an odorless version in a handy dispenser bottle. turpentine works well too and smells good (to me). if mineral spirits don't work try an antique finish cleaner from lowe's or home despot. I worked up a pretty good load for mine with 150-gr bullets, I will look it up when I get home and let you know what it was. IIRC it did MOA with a scope.
  14. where up north? I hunt near charlevoix

    Brazil Bolts

dunno about the bolts, but the girlts are hard to beat.... $90 for a german? you can get them for less.
  16. go to the cmp forums, the folks there are super nice, and they eat, breathe and sleep cmp. they will know what is available at the stores too, sometimes, as folks stop by and relay what they bought and saw.
  17. if you want a shooter, focus on the barrel. for the garand, get a 1960's barrel with the lowest TE and MW. they will loan you the gages. stocks are easy to replace, and cheaper than barrels.
  18. $250 in fair to $700 in excellent is my very rough guess, based on what I would pay, and what I recall from gunbroker.
  19. start wearing a horrible toupee and see what she does then.
  20. see if they aren't standing outside of the home depot....
  21. they are status symbols. truly useless, bred just for idle pleasure. they have no other use - purposefully.
  22. too many people no longer emulate clean-cut success models. instead, the emulate criminal, violent, marginal characters. and then they whine when they find themselves marginalized. the baggy pants thing started in prison. prisoners don't get belts so they can't hang themselves/each other. so their pants sometimes fall down. incredibly, people on the outside started to imitate and emulate that trend. once upon a time, it was a common objective to be confused with somebody smart and successful. now, it is popular to get confused with criminals.
  23. I am so glad I saved my Confederate dollars!!
