  1. If you're willing to do a 280 Rem AI, why not a 7X57 AI?
  2. My numbers for the 280 Rem still show 0.660 to lop off. You might be better off keeping the 7-08.
  3. [EDITED 2X] The 7-08 has a shoulder diameter of .454 at 1.560. The 7X57 has a shoulder diameter of .430 at 1.730, body taper 0.7823 degrees. (0.454 - 0.430) / 2 = 0.012 (half the diameters to establish the opposite side of our triangle) x = (0.012) / (tan 0.7823) = 0.879 (distance down the 7X57 taper to get to a 0.454 diameter) 1.730 - 0.879 = 0.851 inches (base to 0.454 diamter on 7X57 case) 1.560 - 0.851 = 0.709 inches (deeper to 7X57 0.454 diameter) 0.709 X (16 threads/inch) = 11.34 threads So, at an absolute minimum, you'll have to take at least 0.709 off the end to clean out the shoulder of the 7-08 chamber. That's assuming an absolute minimum dimension 7-08 chamber. That will be 11.34 threads, or 12 full threads ( or 0.750) with open sights on the barrel. Is my math right now?
  4. Look at the Colt 1903. Grip safety and side safety. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colt_Model_1903_Pocket_Hammerless
  5. Absolutely insane! I can't believe that law enforcement would even attempt that. A simple "no" should have ended things. Threatening to put kids with CPS is low.
  6. Went to the local Cabelas today. Primers: Any kind you want as long as they are 50 BMG. Powder: They actually had some! Bought some Bullseye. No W231. Mostly Shotgun powders. Mid-range powders non-existant, other than 4198. Loaded ammo: over 100 boxes of 204 Ruger, plenty of 218 Bee, 30'06, 270 Win, 7.62x54R. Had quantities of 45 ACP too. Just about everything except 9mm Luger, 40 S&W, .223 Rem, and .308 Win. Even plenty of 10mm Auto. 38 S&W (not 38 Special) and 221 Fireball too. Bullets: next to nothing. No .224, .308, 9mm, or .40. Shelves were quite empty. Much Heter's ammo, steel case (7.62x54R), and brass (7.62x54R and evrything else). Anyone have experience with Heter's? If I needed to do a varmit shoot today, 204 Ruger and 221 Fireball would be the saviors.
  7. Paper? You need a mild, range-friendly or varmit caliber. 22.250 is way overkill, as is the 220 Swift. How about: .225 Winchester .250 Savage 6MM Benchrest Remington .22 Benchrest Remington Doesn't have to be a repeater either. You could fashion a loading/magazine tray to feed from.
  8. How does it feed as-is? If it feeds reliably, why the extra effort?
  9. The only reference I see to the type of powder is "smokeless". I wouldn't worry about it. The best powder for the 7X57 depends on what you want out of it and the bullet weight. For the heavies, IMR 4831 seems a solid choice. My Hodgen #27 lists it as the fastest with a compressed chage for the 160 grain bullet. Velocities for a given pressure with the 160 grain bullet and IMR powders are in the following DESCENDING order: 4831 4350 4064 3031 4895 4320 The only surprise here is the 4320, which has a burn rate slower than the 4064. Go figure. Get a couple manuals and compare. If 3 manuals list a certain powder in the top 2 or 3 for a given weight, you're home free.
  10. I understand waterdogz' frustration. I'm in the same mindset. I cringe every time I turn on the TV and see an image of an elementary school.... I wait for the other foot to drop and an announcer to proclaim some new tragedy. Terrorists kill and destroy for a reason: attention and/or recognition of a cause. Shock value is just icing on the cake. The monsters performing these acts are no different. It's all about making a statement or recognition. And the press today milks it for what it's worth; ratings and nothing more. The news stations and these villains keep each other alive.
  11. I'm with you, Bro. We need some uplifting posts in the sporterizing sections. Hopefully some winter projects are in the works that will be shared soon. Unfortunately, there's much chatter around the water cooler about all these whack-jobs deciding to die and TAKING EVERYONE WITH THEM! Many folks on this board fear the loss of something we enjoy and are passionate about. It's tough focusing right now. We are in a sad state in our economy, drought, political division, and a morality downward spiral. I think for many people, there's a sense of hopelessness. I don't watch the news on TV; it's just too damn depressing. Our world seems rather cold and empty at times. I don't know what kind of world my young daughter is walking into any more. God willing, I'm hoping we run out of bad things to talk about and can focus on some positive energy. We have no lack of many wonderful people, inspiring stories, and incredible heroes to guide us.
  12. http://www.foxnews.c...intcmp=features https://en.wikipedia...ilitary_service I don't know a thing about his politics, but the following quote shocked me: "He was among the first wave of U.S. soldiers to land at Normandy during the D-Day invasion and the only member of his Army unit to survive. He killed several Germans and was wounded in the leg. Later he was bayoneted by a young German soldier whom he killed with a rock. He was captured in the Battle of the Bulge and survived a massacre of prisoners. In later years, he refused to discuss the military service for which he was awarded the Silver Star and three Purple Hearts." Today's not only Christmas Day, but also a day to remember a hero. RIP, Charles Durning
  13. hylander: Sent a message your way. If he's OK with posting his info, You can post it here.
  14. Everything that I'm seeing on the 'net is stating that M98FN trigger is for 2" trigger guards, and the M98K is for 1.75" trigger guards. My educated guess is that the FN version is fine. I'd call Timney. The Boyd's Bold trigger is also has good reviews, and costs less.
  15. If it's accurate now, removing the steps could screw up everything. Have the barrel cut to length and a simple crown. You can fill in screw holes with black-colored epoxy. Or you can get one of those paint-on type finishes and fill holes and pits with whatever you want: JB Weld, epoxy, etc. (Just don't use toothpaste).
  16. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Howa-1500-308-Winchester-NEW-BARREL-CHEAP-/251194993769?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a7c636c69 If you can get something like this really cheap, you can have the threads cut off/cut down and rechamber for the 300 Savage. It will vary by original barrel if you can do this or not. I'd ask before you go crazy on purchasing. Not 8mm Mauser, but a new barrel with a modern contour.
  17. http://www.ershawbarrels.com/scb-price-list.php For $170, you can get a Shaw barrel fitted and chambered for your action. I think you'll pay a gunsmith that much to do what you're asking to do. Why get rid of the steps? For a "shooter", they help make the barrel more rigid.
  18. I get these calls all the time. Some guy representing himself as being from Microsoft calls, addresses me by name, and then says "we have been monitoring your internet activity and received warnings that your machine is infected with viruses". Area codes are always different, even when the same guy calls back; they must be using VOIP. They are definitely reading off a script. Most of the callers appear to have minimal knowledge of Windows. Guy said he was a college student in the L.A. area, new to the US from India. I'm suspecting the calls are from overseas... He slipped on the actual time; it was way off from Pacific time zone. The caller points you to a web page with a remote access program. They also have a secondary page/program if that first one doesn't seem to work. Have some fun! Do everything in your power to keep them on the phone for as long as possible. Ask them where they're from, talk about sports, the USA, whatever. Pretend you are doing what they ask, just make sure nothing "seems to work". A computer reboot can "take forever"! Be a completely trusting idiot. My record is over 45 minutes....
  19. 98 Mausers are generally fitted to the inner torque ring. Earlier Mausers are fitted to the receiver face. Arms manufacturers are USUALLY quite good about accurately keeping things "true" as part of the manufacturing process. My educated guess is that the bolt raceway, inner torque ring, receiver face, and receiver threads should have all been cut from the same setup/fixturing. "Should" is a big word, and sometimes things don't work the way they ought to.... I'd be mostly concerned that the locking logs are both engaging their recesses. I'd also be concerned about a good muzzle crown and a clean-cut, concentric chamber. A quality barrel is critical. Everything else is overkill for most hunting rifles.
  20. You're talking about "blue-printing" the action. Is the C-ring out of alignment with the rest of the action? Unless you've actually checked, any discussion is trivial. Yes, it can be trued on a mill with a special fixture. When we're taking 0.001 or less, why would you want to use a mill (or a lathe)? Lapping might be a simpler route.
  21. A note to all my Brothers and Sisters out there who answered the call... God bless you all and thank you for your service in the US military. You stood above your peers and kept this country safe. You are truly an inspiration!
