  1. Speer rebate at Midway: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/509192/speer-hot-cor-bullets-8mm-323-diameter-200-grain-spitzer-box-of-50
  2. I know some "Christians" who didn't vote for Romney because he was a Mormon. I wanted to smack a couple people for what they said in regards to that. Absolute hypocrisy. Romney would have done a much better job protecting the rapidly eroding religious freedoms we currently enjoy. I felt the biggest hurdle that Romney would have to overcome during the election would be his faith, and I'm sure that -- had he been a Protestant denomination -- he'd be President right now.
  3. Odd... Despite the "win", foxnews.com is still listing Romney with more votes. Electoral college? I'm not calling this as done until the final tally is done. Be interesting to see if Romney has a clear votes win, and Obama has an electoral college win.
  4. I'm a little confused by this. Having two Winchester-type safeties, a 2-position and a 3-position, the difference would be the "cycle-the-action-with-the-safety-on" position. Is not having that 3rd position that significant? Most 2-position safeties lock the bolt; the Remington is one of the few that allows cycling the action with the safety engaged. The Savage 110 has a pseudo 3rd-position. I'd rather have a safety on the LEFT side of the shroud, so I don't have to shift my thumb over the grip when operating it. The Savage safety up high on the tang is very effective as well.
  5. If Davis is OK with still giving out his info, post it here. I thought that someone said he wasn't doing bolts, but I don't remember exactly whether it was him or not. Give him a call and ask. If he wants business, this is the place to post it. I had him bend a bolt for me some time ago and he did a nice job.
  6. As far as contour, it's a matter of weight. I'm seeing a huge difference between the F-34 and F-14. Compared to Douglas contours, the F-34 is HEAVY. The F-14 matches Douglas a little more closely. I'm reading at least a pound, if not more. Look at these dimensions: http://www.douglasbarrels.net/dimensions/ http://www.midwayusa.com/Content/Legacy/barrel_barrel_blank.htm A&B's "light" F-34 weighs as much as Douglas' #5. I've never heard anyone complain that Douglas' barrels were too thin. If I were building a "bean field" rifle, I'd use a heavier contour. The F-34 would be nice. For something I'd want to carry, the F-14 would be a better choice. I like compact, handy rifles. Some folks like a minimum of 28" of barrel and 12 pounds. To each his own.
  7. Check out Shaw or Douglas for pricing. Shaw appears to be either $170+$115 or $135+$115. Call Shaw. There is a wait: http://www.ershawbarrels.com/scb-price-list.php http://www.douglasbarrels.net/pricelist/ Another older link someone had recommended for work is the Hunter's Den: http://www.thehuntersden.com/services.htm "INSTALL PRE-THREADED AND CHAMBERED BARREL ~ $160.00". That plus the cost of an A&B barrel is very fair. I don't own any A&B barrels. Try reading customer reviews. I was impressed with what actual customers had to say about performance: http://www.midwayusa.com/brand/adams-and-bennett
  8. "where in the the U.S. Constitution it says we have a two party system?" It doesn't state it in the Constitution. I only have history to rely on; this country has had a "two-party" system since its inception. We have a "winner-takes-all" electoral college. Spoils to the victor. Loser is S-O-L. Always has been. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two_party_system "and I should to get the F@*k out? Do you know how stupid that sounds?" The only thing that "sounds stupid" is wasting a vote for a candidate that has NO opportunity whatsoever. I'm sure the winning candidate will reflect highly on those losing votes while sipping some fine whiskey in the Oval Office. I don't think anyone should leave the USA because of differing opinions; I was only reflecting on the futility of voting options for third party candidates. People don't usually leave because a candidate loses; Alec Baldwin would be in France right now otherwise. "So I write in a vote for a Constitutionalist, over Communist one or Communist two" You can vote for or write-in whoever you want. Vote for the Green Party, Libertarian Party, Constitution Party, Opus and Bill, or whatever. If you think it makes a difference in national elections, good for you. Ralph Nader and Ron Paul have been the perpetual losing candidates for years.... "Maybe in the next election". Now, local elections.... That's another issue. Third-party candidates can make significant inroads at both city and state levels. Those local candidates and their new ideas can sway the views of major parties. Remember: the Republican Party was the champion of African-Americans after the Civil War, while Democrats opposed the "Carpet-Baggers" ruining the existing oppressive establishment. Times do change indeed. I'm not using any profanity and I have no rage in my heart. I realize that changing set minds can be a wasted effort.
  9. You can write in "None of the Above" and really blow their minds. Or just leave it blank. That'll show 'em! We have a two-party system in this country. Short of anarchy, there is no other "path". Well, you could always move to another country, I guess. I'm not enamored with either candidate, either. But I have to pick a direction. It's the lesser of two evils. "You just gonna hold that stick of dynamite, or are you going to fish?"
  10. I like a 20-21" barrel for non-magnums. Nothing to apologize for. The "classic" 6.5 is the 6.5x54 MS, and no one complains about its compact 18" barrel.
  11. The 6.5x55, 6.5x57, and .260 Rem (and the 6.5 Creedmoor as well) are the same in terms of ballistics. The difference between each will be the "vehicle" carrying them. The .260 Rem and 6.5 Creedmoor are well suited to "short" action rifles, specifically rifles designed around cartridges with a 2" case (.308 Win, .243 Win, 7mm'08, etc.). The 6.5x55 and 6.5x57 were designed from the beginning to work through 93-98 Mauser actions. I like the 6.5x55, especially in my 96 Swede. It's accurate and gentle. I also like the looks of a 140-160 spire point/boat tail seated out to maximum length )without touching the lands) in the magazine. It's a graceful, beautiful cartridge. It, or the similar 6x57, would be my choice for building a standard 98 Mauser rifle. If I came across a good deal on a .260 Rem in a 98, set up correctly to feed and function, I would readily grab it and be quite happy as well. The F-14 is about as close as your are going to get to the Douglas sporter profiles. The F-14 only comes in 21" though: http://www.midwayusa.com/Content/Legacy/barrel_barrel_blank.htm My guess is that you will save a pound between the two barrels. I'd probably go with the F-14.
  12. .270 Win is good. So is the .260 Rem. Both kill things very dead. To me, the .260 Rem, 6.5x55, 6.5x54, and 6.5x57 all scream "lightweight rifle". The .270 will probably feed better (without alteration) from a stock Mauser magazine; its taper is close to the original 8mm case. The .260 is based on the .308 Win, and has less body taper than the 8mm. It's also a shorter round. .308 family cartridges sometimes require some magazine/follower/rail work. The 6.5x55 will require no work to function from an 8mm magazine, and is also commercially available.
  13. Anything 6.5 is nice. The 6.5x55 might feed a little easier and require less work than the .260 Rem. The 6.5x57 uses standard base brass (as opposed to the 6.5x55); it's a semi-wildcat though and a hand loading proposition. Douglas offers the 6.5x57 (Spence Special) as a chambering.
  14. Then why get it? Get something you want. You know you have a hankering for the .35 Whelen and 6.5'06. Shaw has unthreaded barrels in YOUR caliber for $135 ($170 threaded)....
  15. My baby/toddler daughter went everywhere I did, and I was most appreciative of the baby changing stations in the Men's room.
  16. These stocks have the comb starting about equal to or after the bottom tip of the pistol grip: Gary Goudy Classic, G & H High Comb Classic: http://www.gunstocks.com/Stockstyles.html#5 Look at the Kodiak, African Mannlicher, and tiger Mannlichers: http://kilimanjarorifles.com/features/geometries.html Even Boyds' Classic (JRS) stock has the comb set back: http://www.boydsgunstocks.com/Classic-Replacement-Stocks-for-a-Mauser-Rifles-s/45.htm Revolution Stocks appears set back far too: http://www.revolutionstocks.com/savagestocks/savage110stocks.php
  17. You can always set the forward end of the comb back, creating a more open grip. Look on the web for images; I've seen some where the comb starts later than yours, almost to the rear of the pistol grip. The forward end of the comb really doesn't do anything, i.e., your cheek is nowhere near it.
  18. Both links reference a "Turtle Club" and pilots: "Started by a group of test pilots during the Second World War, The Turtle Club in Fairbanks, AK...." "....started as an informal "drinking club" between World War II pilots,...." The wiki link you gave adds the word "sweet" to what I gave you as a response: "Are you a turtle?" "You bet your sweet a$$ I am". I don't see where the "T" ties in. I figured it was phone-texting talk. LOL.
  19. Something along the lines of: "You bet your a$$ I am..."?
  20. You'll have to get the new barrel installed to see how things will fit in the stock. My guess is the new barrel will clean out most of the old barrel channel. If the gap is too big on the black (ebony?) fore end tip, you could use epoxy/bedding compound tinted black to fill it in. Bishop made nice stocks. If you're happy with the fit and look, why mess with a good thing? You could always eliminate any white-line spacers to modernize things a bit.
  21. If you can remove the bolt from the action: - Run a long cleaning rod from the rear of the action and let the front of it exit the muzzle. - thread an over-sized bronze brush (35 caliber?) onto the rod - slowly pull the rod and brush back That should grab the mouth of the case and pull it back.
  22. I was a big synthetic fan for a long time, but I really like the laminated stocks now. You can get a pepper-laminate from Boyds: http://www.boydsgunstocks.com/Classic-Replacement-Stocks-for-a-Mauser-Rifles-s/45.htm Finished stocks are $92, unfinished are $69. The Royal Jacaranda stock simply looks crazy! The Classic that Boyds offers has very clean lines. Laminates are strong and stable. Also, as it's a wood stock, tweaking things and modifications are much simpler compared to synthetics. I'm happy with the synthetics I have, but I won't be getting any more.
  23. I really do like RSS feeds. The RSS feed seems to work ONLY if I'm logged in to the board. That's not the way RSS should work; my RSS client (Sparse RSS) has no option for passwords. There must be a flag somewhere to fix it.
