  1. I'm thinking it is 308 Win. but still don't know the origin.

Bore diameter at crown measured with my dial caliper is the exact same ID as a spent 308Win neck - I measured both. My dial calipers said .307 (?). A .308 bullet rests upside down in the crown .192" from cannelure. I measured the distance from the chamber opening (front edge of extractor groove) to the base of the neck at the shoulder to be 1.602". If it were 7.7 Arisaka I think that measurement would approach 1.874" and bore diameter would be .311".

I also chambered a spent 308Win case and it chambered to the extractor groove.

If there is anyone out there who has a 308Win cartridge or spent case and a 7.7 Arisaka rifle, I'm wondering if a 308 Win would chamber? I believe the 308Win's wider body would prevent it from fully chambering in 7.7 Arisaka - its taper is more severe than the 30-06 in which a 308Win will not chamber. That would be very helpful and give me additonal confidence that it is 308 Win.

Hey Bob I've got some .308 cartridges and I will try to chamber them in my 7.7 tommorrow and will let you know

  2. depends on if you want to save the barrels or not.On my 99 I had a sewerpipe barrel that I did'nt want to keep anyway,if you have the Midway type barrel vise with wood blocks you can make a pair of blocks to fit the receiver and put the receiver in the barrel vise and use a pipe wrench on the barrels

  3. I spent too much on a sporterized type 38, with a 308 Win barrel. The receiver has lots of holes, half of them stripped, most of them off center. The stock is ugly and cracked. It closes on a no go gage.

I found a new gun shop, right under my nose in New Kensington! They have lots of milsurps, including a crate of Arisaka barreled receivers, for $9!!!!!

    1. How can I tell a type 38 receiver from a Type 99 receiver?

    2. Are any parts interchangeable between the 38 and 99? Same barrel thread?

This rifle is hardly worth putting more money into, but I can spring for 9 bucks! I tried to sell the piece of junk for $40 at a gun show, and got a lot of laughs, but no offers. My wife likes how short the rifle is. If I can get it shooting, it would be a good rifle for one of my kids.

    Thanks.

I do'nt know a whole lot about them but I do know the bolts will not interchange.I like the Arisakas,If I knew where the crate of them were for $9 I would buy them all.

  4. Real good way to "F" up a receiver.

Mike, please explain why this would damage the receiver.I'm not trying to be a wiseass I have seen and heard about your work and hold nothing but 1oo% respect for your craftmanship,I only would like to know since I am very inexperienced in this area and would like to know for the future.I personally have done this a couple times on these receivers and actually I do'nt cycle the bolt but if it just drags a little I put lapping compound on the guide and just push the bolt in and out a few times and it seems to polish the raceway to allow tthe bolt to not drag anymore.
