  1. I am working from memory here, but I believe that the older H & R Mausers (the Ultra Rifles) were on FN actions. More recently, they marketed one (the M-340???) on a MK X action.

  2. Sometime I think surplus should and should not be chop.up. This is one of the time I am saying something. Don't, if you are looking for a project I have a turk action that been part sporterized and a 260 Rem barrel to trade if you are interested. Action been drilled and tapped with scope mounts, action true and lip removed. I think it has a bold trigger with swing safety. I have to check on the trigger and safety. Turn down bolt handle.

Semi- Is your turk a M-1903? If so, I have an excellent cond all matching 96 Swede, except for the stock, which is very nice full fiddleback, but is a non-match number. I bought it 20+ years ago to sporterize, but it is so crisp that I could never bring myself to touch it. Now I am glad that I didn't. If you have any interest, maybe we could work something out.

  3. I know everyone here was wondering this. Today is the 111th anniversary of the first commision testing of the 1898 Mauser. I know, big weeny. But it got me thinking. 111 years ago they were testing something that yet today, we are still fascinated with just as it was. Sure we clean, polish and alter somewhat, but we admire the design more than any of the others. I recently saw a Holland & Holland catalog. Their "repeating rifle", as they call it, "is based on the original Mauser design with refinements". In the picture was a beautiful rifle - drop dead gorgeous. It had a Mauser action. It had a thumb slot for crying out loud. They used an ex military receiver for a rifle that cost almost as much as my house. Are they being cheap? No. They are using what they feel is the best.

I'm amazed at what the minds of some came up with 100 years ago. More so than new modern "break-throughs".

    Just my random thoughts.

That is pretty amazing, isn't it? Both the 100+ years and the H & H Rifle. But I feel the same way. I prefer them to anything else. The more I learn about them, the better I like them.

  4. A lot of turks had czech bolts. Was that the cheybogen show? How is it?

    Hi Don,

It was the Birch Run show on 1/10. It was very well attended, but I didn't find much else of interest, except an OK Yugo 24/47.

I was at the Cheb. show (last fall, I think...) and it was pretty small. I didn't find anything I couldn't live without. Maybe it will be better in May.

  5. I picked up a really crisp one at a gun show last month. It is marked with a z inside a circle underneath the root of the bolt handle, on the safety wing, extractor collar and the cocking piece, and is also marked with the Turkish crescent moon. A Czech bolt that went to Turkey? Anyway, I bought it for $40.00, and was happy.

  6. I came across a new action to me last Friday.

I didn't have a caliper but it looked to be small ring with large threads ( 98) and std length ( I think )

It had a hand guard lip that raised above the ring that ran from 10:00 to 2:00.

    What is it?

There were no recognizable stamps and it was mixed in with Brno's, Styer's, FN's, Obendorf's

    Oh yea and LaCourtina's.

Maybe a M98a? Marked "Kar 98" on left rcvr. wall? I have one made in Erfurt that was shortened for a .250 Sav., and I like it. But supposed to be limited to low pressure rounds because of the very thin ring.

  7. Anyone know for sure?

Same as std length Mauser? Same screw spacing, bottom metal, std length bolt????

There in one on GB that I am considering. It is actually a receiver only and I wanted to know if there was anything

special about it. The bolt stop & ejector assy looked different but I don't know if that means it needs a special bolt.

    I'm sure someone here knows.

    Thanks in advance!!

I am no expert, but I think the screw spacing and bottom metal are interchamgable with a std. M98. The bolt, however, is different, the lugs extend farther forward, more like a M96.
