  1. I was in JROTC 1976 to 1980. I attended a Catholic all male high school, Christin Brothers College H. S (CBC). It was a school known for excellent quality education. We had several Jewish class mates that wore a Ya mica under their Garrison Caps. They were good friend and we never thought twice about it. I know we have never had Israel attack us. Couldn't this be a step to include these youngsters into The American tapestry. Wasn't one of the hightest decorated units in WWII made up of Japanese American soldiers. Many of whom were in internment camps before they enlisted? I see what the big deal is. Ralph
  2. 1+ on the aluminum Christmas Tree and tricolored light wheel. Sounds like a great time. A Merry Christmas to all. Ralph
  3. OK, I think I figured out how to fund future builds. After first posting this I got on a selling kick. Non of my guns, not that desperate. I started looking around the house for things I could sell on e-bay. Mostly odds and ends of stuff just sitting around. Anyhow in over the past 2 months I have put $1,200 in to my build fund. I also bought 2 more Yugo 24/47's. I am back to working on the Turk. I'm taking the hand guard retaining ring off and truing up the face of the receiver. The stock will be bedded in January. I will then be able to get it off for a barrel and bolt handle. The 2 new 24/47 will be a 308 for my Daughter and a 243 for me. Ralph
  4. WOW guys. I was just trying to say that all you guy are lucky. We don't have anyone (that I can find ) with in a 100 miles to tread a barrel or weld on a bolt handle. If anyone wants to relocate I'll be your first customer. If not, Clemson will be getting my work. Ralph
  5. On my way back from Deer hunting on Monday I stopped for gas. In side the station there was a stack of business cards for a "gunsmith". I asked the clerk if he know the guy. "Oh yeah he's real good". I grabbed a card and went on my way. I've been looking for a real "Gunsmith" in the St. Louis area for 4 years now. My thought was to maybe get some hands on time with the stuff I've been sending to Clemson. I called the guy. I tell him I'm going to need a barrel fitted and head spaced. I am also going to need a sporter bolt handle welded on. There is a long pause. "I've never done nothing like that before." "I'm a out of work machinist and am doing this to make ends meet." We talked for a bit. He mainly fits / replaces broken parts in Grad dads old shooter. I don't blame him for making a buck. Not a total loss. As we talked I did find out he puts together 1911's. I would like to do more on my builds. I don't have the equipment needed or money to buy it. As it is it takes me 6+ months to finish what Bill starts for me. So I guess I'll still be sending my stuff off to Clemson. Ralph
  6. Nice Buck, Congratulations. My Daughter is 25 now. She started scouting and reloading with me when see was 4 or 5. She loves to hunt. I just need to get used to her choice in pink camo. Ralph
  7. Way to go for him, I think he should have given that jack ass a vertical butt stroke with his M14. Ralph
  8. Nice buck, I wouldn't have let him walk. Ralph
  9. Congratulations and with a stick at that. Just kidding, He's a nice one. Ralph
  10. I would love to find a deal on black Friday. Being in retail management I will be held against my will from 4:00am until at least 4:00pm . I will however pass along any I hear of. Ralph
  11. Welcome Jon Be careful that kind of how I got started. As far as stocks go take a look at Richards microfit. Brownells and Midway are good source for parts. If you go to Mauser Central site there is a list (on the left side ) of different venders for different part. Your in for lots of fun. Feel free to ask question someone will have the answer. Ralph
  12. Very nice. I would say it was a month well spent. Ralph
  13. Brenden MY FN Belgian Model 24 looks exactly like it. It's a large ring, standard length action. I would have ripped the pocket off my jeans getting my wallet out for the $50. The surface rust shouldn't be a big deal. It should make for a great build. Keep us posted as you go. Ralph
  14. Karl Welcome to the free world. Many of Us have enjoyed these freedoms for many years. Ralph
  15. Some of you guys that frequent surplus rifle forum will see a thread on my new Yugo M48BO. I set a goal for my self about a 2 years ago to collect one of every model of Yugo bolt action rifle. I had a M48A that I got from Sarco. I then got a Syrian contract. Having 2 of the models. I desided that I should try to collect 1 of each model they made. Anyway here is a link to the thread on the start of my collection. http://www.surplusrifleforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=112387 I wanted to be very selective on what I bought. I would only look for all matching rifles. The condition needed to be very good to excellent. Now I have the last model I thought I needed to make my collection complete. It is a all matching, excellent condition M48BO (without markings) model. I got it for $300 shipped off gun broker. I had the $300 set aside for my 280 Remington. Sorry Clemson you may not see that Turk action for the 280 until spring. At that price shipped with all accessories I couldn't pass it up. After thinking about it I might need a Model1924 and a 24/52 and then I would have a complete collection of Yugo's. Here are a few pictures of my collection and the BO model. I do have a mix-master 24/47 that I got cheep that will become a sporter at some point.
  16. I remember the first airing of I Claudius on PBS. We had to watch it for a history of the Roman Empire class in 11th grade. It was almost soft porn by that days standards. Today it wouldn't even get a pg13 rating. It was also strange viewing for the all Male, Catholic, JROTC high school I attended. Ralph
  17. Welcome back Jim. I'm a fellow Missourian that joined in your absents. Good luck finding some Mausers. I see a few in the STL area. Ralph
  18. Care-full Milsurp Bob that's how I got started. Your Yugo 24/47 is an intermediate length action. The advantage (according to some including me) is that they are more accurate than a standard Mauser action. They are stiffer and have less flex under fire. I am very pleased with all of mine. The down side is that any cartridge longer than 57mm in length are all most impossible to make cycle in the chamber. This rules out all based on the 30-06. They will work but will take a lot effort and not worth it. If your barrel is in good shape then keep it a work up from there. If you need to replace the barrel then you could keep it in 8x57 and take almost any game in North America. From there have a new bolt handle welded on, D&T, sporter trigger and stock. You can glass bed and add a sporter bolt shroud. I just picked up a 24/47 that had a sporter bolt handle welded on it. I am going to finish the job but leave it 8x57. Read through all the posts and you will find out almost anything you need to know. Ask any question you have and someone will have the answer. There are a lot of guys here that are willing to help. Good luck and keep us updated as you progress. Ralph
  19. While at Fort Jefferson there were 2 home made Cuban "boats" these were the latest to make it ashore. The US policy is if a Cuban refugee touches dry land they can stay. Would a lib. be willing to endure this kind of danger? The 1st. boat had 22 people aboard. It is made of sheet metal and fiber glass at the seams. There are holes in the sides for ores. Nothing more than ridge plastic screwed to poles. The tiller is a wedge of flat metal welded to a pole. It was powered by a motor of Asian origin. The fuel was limited so it was only used to stay on course. The 2nd. boat had 18 people in it. It is made of plastic tarps covered in some sort of resin. The "cage" over the tarps is welded re-bar. This was powered by ores and a 25hp outboard. Again limited fuel so only used to maneuver and stay on course. There is a lot of reasons to secure the boarders. I know that with the current econometric conditions of the country we we need jobs for our citizens. But this kind of efforts is something to behold. Ralph
  20. Well we made it back and are still married. Overall a lot of fun. We discovered that Lisa doesn't do well in 10' seas. We went to Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas. The boat ride was 2 1/2 hours of 10' seas. Many of the passengers got sick. She was so sick that she had to be flown off by sea plane. I couldn't get her on the water the rest of the week. I guess if I ever want to hide from her I need to look for an island. Any how I felt bad for her so I let her spend $400 at the Coach purse store. I can use this as investment. The next time I want something I have a $400 credit. All in all we had a good time. Ralph
  21. Wow at those prices my mauser collection is worth about 4 1/2 times what I have into it. This is why I love to go to our local gun shows. I always get a good laugh. Between the over-inflated prices and the big piles of B.S. I walk slowly and hear all the stories and misinformation and smile. I look for the guy in the aisle trying to sell the surplus rifle that he can't feed and see if it's something I want. This my Yugo bolt action collection. If the cost of each is added together I am into them for less than $1000. including shipping. Ralph
  22. The wife and I are finally going to take our Honeymoon. We've been married for 25 years on Nov. 8th. I can't believe she has put up with my BS all these years. We never had the time or money to take a Honeymoon. The first week of Sept we are going to Key West FL for a week. If any of you guys are in or near Key West let me know. We'll have a cold one to the women that don't leave us for the time we spend with our other loves (guns, shooting, reloading, hunting ect...) Ralph
  23. Ya, but it's a dry heat. Could be worse, earlier this week we had 98* and 80% humidity. I went out and shot my Bow after work. Great practice for early Archery season. Our opening day is Sept 15th. Ralph
  24. Congratulations Sir. You look don't look over weight at all. Ralph
