  1. Sorry Bill Rite now I am saving for my 280 rem. on another Turk. action. You will have to do it before you get this one. Ralph
  2. The largest local gun show was this weekend. I couldn't get there until this afternoon. About 2 hours before closing. At the end of the last day is deal time so that's when I usually go. Anyway I saw a lot of waaaaay over-priced stuff. There were a few nice thing but nothing that would fit my needs. And then. A private seller was looking to sell a mix-master 24-47. It wouldn't close on a field gauge. The trigger guard and floor plate are stamped from a 48A. All bands are milled. The bore is strong and not pitted. The condition of the action is really good. Someone had a sporter bolt handle welded on. I paid $130.00 for it. The last time Clemson welded a bolt handle for me it was $120.00 and $16.75 shipping. So thinking like my wife, I got a free rifle and saved $6.75 on a bolt job. This one may end up as my "retro sporter" in-stead of my FN.
  3. Well here is what I have done so far. I pulled the follower, mag. spring and extractor out of my FN model 24. It stilled binds. I opened the rails up some and still binds. This being my 1st. build I don't know what the issue is. So before I screw something up it got shipped off to Clemson today. Ralph
  4. I did some checking on what could be causing the binding in the mag. The spring is defiantly weak so I changed it. This made matters worse. The new stronger spring made all the rounds bind. The rounds are binding on the rials. My question is how much and how far back should they be opened up? Ralph
  5. Looks great. Please explain how your "action puller" is set up. I love big bores. I had a Marlin 1895 in 45-70. I would load it hot (for 45-70) it was always a head turner at the range. I may have to look for another action for a big bore build. Ralph
  6. I have been on my job for 8 years. Three years ago they came up with "responsible social media disclosure". I refused to sign it. I told them that as soon as I got a face book page, my space, twitter, ect.. I would gladly surrender my right to free speech. I don't disclose who I work for on line so it's none of their business what I say on line. Ralph
  7. I usually hit the local Flea Market on Sunday mornings. There is a fair selection of shooting and sporting goods. I came across this in a box of outdoor related books. The seller had several by Jack O Conner but I thought this would be a good read. I got it for $10. I also passed on a Yugo model 24, not 24/47 or 24/54. The seller wanted $130 for it. The metal was untouched. It had the stock chopped the a hatchet but would have made a good project rifle. If it's there next week I'll see if I can get it for $110ish. But I needed the cash to finish the projects on my bench. Ralph

    Holiday

I worked around the house yesterday, stained the deck. Today we go to the range in the morning. Nothing says American freedom like shooting. In the afternoon we watch the movie 1776. It's a musical but gives a little insight into why we aren't Limeies. We finish the day with a BBQ and fireworks. Private position of fireworks are still legal in our county so it's a great show. "Happy Birthday America". Let's drink a cold one for those that gave all. Ralph
  9. If any one is interested a member of gun boards has a Brownell's heat sink kit for sale for $49. shipped. It lists for around $100 ($80 dealer) plus shipping. Seams like a good deal. I also just bought and received some 35 cal 250 grain bullets from another member. They were new old stock. I got 100 Hornady spire points and 194 Nosler Partitions for $100 shipped. He was asking $25 a box shipped, got the partial box as part of a package deal. I think he still has 100 Partitions and 300 ( 6 box's) Speer Grad slams left for $25 a box also. PM or e-mail me if you would like the contact info on the bullet seller. Ralph
  10. I am in favor of doing business with companies that stand behind their products. I broke the large primer feed bar on my Dillon 550. I called them on this past Saturday. I get a replacement in the mail today. No questions, No charge just sent the replacement. Ralph
  11. That's going to be real cool. I am been thinking of something to do with a Mosin Nagant if I found one at the right price. Could you post a picture of what you did with the bolt handle? Ralph
  12. Don I got the e-mail. Thanks Ralph
  13. Good Evening Everyone. I'll be getting my 1895 Mauser back from Clemson next week. I am building this one for my brother that lives in San Antonio. I am just out side of St. Louis. I may need to shorten the stock. He is 6" shorter and built rounder than I am. Is there a way for him to get his length of pull without a "gauge"? I have always heard that the length of your for-arm was a good rule. Anyone have a better way to 'guesstamate" this measurement. Thanks Ralph
  14. He, your Mom and You will be in my prayers. Ralph

    Fn Mauser

Range report. All rounds chambered fine. The 165gr. and 200gr ran 3" groups at 50 yards. The 180s' may be the bullets for this rifle. The 4 rounds are within an inch. The 1 flyer at 1 1/2 above the group that I called when I pulled the trigger. This is with issue sights and trigger. This gun may work out as my "retro" sporter build. I just have to finish the other 2 projects on my bench. Ralph

I think I figured out why some rounds wouldn't chamber. I loaded a dummy round and put Diecem on the projectile. When chambered the rifling left marks in the diecem. The chamber has a very short "free bore". The length is 2.692 from back of cartridge to start of rifling. My other three 06's run 2.696 to 2.698. I loaded up some test loads with 165gr., 180gr. and 200gr. projectiles. I pulled the firing pin and all test loads chamber fine. I'll get it to the range this week. Maybe it will like one. Range report to follow soon. Ralph
  17. Hey Karl I don't think he would ever do anything. He came over with a child and hid behind her. Cowards like this will make threats put rarely would ever get up the guts to act on them. I would be more concerned if he had come over alone and entered your yard uninvited to speak his mind. I think you did the right thing by stepping up to his challenge. Either way you will be moved soon and they will be someone else s problem. Ralph
  18. Congratulations sir. I hope that you are promoted. Ralph (former E-5 MoARNG)
  19. Congratulations!! He will be your most long term build but the most rewarding. My 23 year old Daughter and 21 year old Son are mine. Ralph
  20. Hey maybe Westboro Baptist church and Rev. Fred can go protest his burial sight. Ralph
  21. Yes on a 25-06. It is a sweet shooting cartridge. I have an early 1960's Remington 700 in 25-06. Like gun nutty said use a slow burning powder with the 120 grainers. My original loading were with H870 until it was discontinued. I now use Rutombo. My loading is 3150 fps and .65" @100 yards. Keep us informed. One of my next projects will be a 280 Remington featherweight. Ralph
  22. A similar thing happen here about a year ago. The closest hotel rooms they could get were around 60 miles away. Somehow overnight all their tires sustained a tragic loss of air pressure. It took several hours to correct the issues. It is better to take the fight to them. Our brave service men deserve better than this. In the long run they give of themselves to protect these a-holes rights to protest them. Ralph

    Fn Mauser

These are all 06. I think they are seated deeper. Thinking about it I might have done this to get the length correct to feed in picky M-1 I had. I am going to do some fresh rounds for it and get back to the range. They were all I had at the time and really wanted to shoot it. Ralph

    Fn Mauser

Range report. I finally got the FN to the range. Overall not bad shooting. The only 06 I had loaded was some 150 grain FMJ's reloads for my M-1. I would call this a 3 inch or so group at 75 yards. The only issue was not all of my rounds would chamber. The bolt would close as normal on some, stiff on some and not at all on others. Looking at and measuring the fired brass the shoulder seams off. This may be nothing at all or not reamed far enough. I could have had die not full length resizing. These were loaded from a few years back and I don't remember if it was something I was testing. I will load some fresh ammo and make sure that everything is in spec. Hopefully they will chamber as desired. The rounds in the picture would not chamber. The brass is what would. On the bright side my son and I went Turkey hunting this morning. He lost interest in hunting about 4 or 5 years ago. I called for him and He shot a Jake at 6:45. Man was pumped up over it. Hopefully I will have my hunting buddy back. I couldn't get any Toms to come in for me but I don't care today was one of the best days hunting in a long while. . Ralph
  25. This is what makes our country so great. Criminals and their supporters can protest a lawful gathering. Let them go to some 3rd world s***hole (that they came from) and try this. They would be "killed in a car crash" on the way to jail or "shot while resisting arrest". Freedom isn't free and this is part of the byproduct of it. Ralph
