    Fn Mauser

I hope you are rite. Always looking for a halfass reason to buy a new gun. Ralph
  2. Count me in. I need at least one for my 280Rem build. I might get another to just have if I do something with the FN I just got. Ralph

    Fn Mauser

I pulled it out of the stock this week. There is still cosmaline under the wood. The "paint" finish is really good. It is chipped on the exposed areas but looks new under the wood. I am going to get it to the range this weekend and see how it shoots.
  4. I really need to get this FN to the range and see how it shoots. I took it out of the stock and there is still cosmoline on it under the wood. The more I think about it the more I want to do a 1950's style sporter. I don't know if I will use this one or get a k98. I have two others that I need to be worked on a little more before I start something else. Ralph
  5. I am ready to order the Trigger, bolt shroud and scope mounts for this build. I ran into a question on scope mounts. Checking Midway and Brownells they don't list mounts for a 95 action. They do show for Sweed 96's though. Are the action contours the same? I want to use dove tail mounts like Leupold. The cock on open change is out not really needed. Ralph

    Fn Mauser

This weekend is the largest local gun show. I went looking for a Mosin Nagant for a future project. I also took a all matching 1944 #4 MK1 that I unbubbaed. I was in to this #4 for $275. A little to deep to sell to a dealer but it looked good and I was asking $375 and would take $325. My plan was to sell or trade the #, buy a Mosin and have some cash for current projects. I never really saw any Mosins at a price that made them a deal. One of the regular dealers liked the #4 and wanted to do a deal. We had done some business in the past so all the Bull was off the table. We traded even my #4 for a FN Luxembourg contract mauser in 30-06. This rifle is dated 1951. The paint finish is worn. The bore is shiny with strong rifling. I will need to get it to the range and see how it shoots. Long term this may become a 1950's style sporter. I have a vintage Weaver K4 and Redfield 3x9. Go with a model 70 style safety and a light Maple stock. I have several other projects going so I have time to think it through. Ralph
  7. Went looking for a Mosin and came home with a FN Mauser. I took a Enfield #4 MK1 that I unbubbaed earlier this year and some cash. I didn't see any Mosins that were right for my plans. One of the dealers was interested in my Enfield so we traded even. I got a all matching FN 98 in 30-06. It was made for Luxembourg in 1951. The bore is good, as is the overall condition. I will have to get it the range and see how it shoots. This would make a good candidate to turn in to a "old school" 1950's style sporter. I will update you after some range time. Ralph
  8. I am starting a build on a 1895 Chilean Mauser for my brother. He picked it up last year for around for $90. The vintage (made in El Passo) Weaver K4 on it was worth half of the price. It was sporterized a long time ago. The bolt handle was crudely bent and the safety was ground down. He wants to keep the original military barrel and sights. Our dad had a 1895 Belgian as his Deer rifle and He wants it to be similar. My brother isn't a shooter and this gun will get little use. I have shot it and it did ok with the 2 stage trigger and open sights. The one piece Redfield mount had to go. It made it very hard to load. I am working on removing the stripper clip hump. I put a screw in to the hole from inside the receiver to protect the threads. I will send it off to Clemson to have the bolt handle fixed or replaced, I haven't decided yet. I will replace the bolt shroud and trigger. What is detailed and is it worth the effort to change it to cock on open? Will the trigger be still be for a 95 or would a 98 then work?
  9. I like the way the stock turned out. I will file that idea way for a later project. Ralph
  10. I had to load some 8x57 to see how they would cycle in my 35 Whelen. The 1st. and 2nd. 8x57 rounds jam as the Whelens do. It looks like they bind on the feed ramp. Anyone have any ideas? If not I can live with only 3 rounds in the mag. Ralph
  11. There is a big gun show coming up in a few weeks. I already have a all matching, not counterbored M38 that is too nice to molest. I all way see some misguided sole dragging around a 91/30 or M44 looking to sell. The dealers want to steal it and the seller paid to much to give it away. I thought that maybe I could get one at a fair price then it could be a project. Anyone have a suggestion on re-barreling and or cartridge change that could be done? Ralph
  12. Took my 35 Whelen to the range again today. Durring my first range sesion I only loaded a max of 3 rounds at a time in the magazine. Today I tried to load 5 rounds. I could load all 5 rounds in the mag. but the first 2 rounds wouldn't get picked up by the bolt. It would push them free from the mag but the rim wouldn't get caught by extractor. Rounds 3,4 &5 would feed and extract just fine. Is this because of the differance in the body taper and/or over all length of the 35 vs 8x57? Would seating the bullet a little deeper solve this problem? I don't think that I would ever have a need for 5 rounds but would like to know the answer if anyone has it. Ralph
  13. Here is the range report. I loaded 20 rounds useing necked up 3006 brass. These rounds were breaking in the barrel and fire forming the cases. The load is Hornady 250 grain sp/rp #3520, 52.0 grains of IMR 4320 with CCI #250 mag primer. Overall I think this gun will shoot better than I could ever get out of it.
  14. I am going to order the stocks for my next 2 builds today. I am going to build a 7x57 on a 1895 Chilean sporter. The 280 Rem is going to be on a K.Kales turk Mauser action. The question I have is, can plane old "fiberglass resin" and cream hardener be used for bedding? Is this the same resin? I wonder if the sawdust could be mixed into to match the color of the stock? I have a quart can that would be cheaper to use than buy more from Brownells? Ralph
  15. If I remamber correctly didn't this happen to the female GI truck driver that was captured in the second Gulf war?
  16. The stripper clip hump was around 2 hours. The hand gaurd ring was about the same. I did the bulk of with the dremal and finetuned it by files. I did a lot of checking with a digital caliper. I had Bill (Clemson) dubble check my work when I sent it in for D&T and bolt handel. The stock had been on Richards close out page for a long time. It came with the recoil pad and sling swivels. It had a military chanel so it had to be opened up. Bill, I'll be sending you the 1895 for a new bolt handel soon. Ralph
  17. SO comforting to know that these will be the caretakers of this great land after we are gone. Ralph
  18. Thanks Guys. I will get her to the range on Saturday. I bought a set of new old stock RCBS dies on e-bay for $20 shipped. I got some bullets off gunbroker. The brass will be onced fired 3006. I'll post a range report on Saturday. My next builds are going to be a 280 rem and 7x57. The other Turk receiver I have will be the 280. I am planning on it being a montain/ feather weight style. I am also going to build a 7x57 for my brother. He got a 1895 Chilan that was bubbafied. It has been t&d but the bolt handel was crudely bent. I took it to the range and shot it. It is ugly but the bolt isn't warped. Ralph
  19. This is my first build. I only started it about a year and a half agoe. A short recap of what has happen thus far. About 2 years agoe I picked up a 1945 K Kales with a shot out barrel. I found this forum and desided to try my hand at sporterizing it. I have always wanted a 35 Whelen and now I have one. I did some of the work myself. I removed the stripper clip hump and hand gaurd retaining ring with hand files and Dremal. I had Clemson weld up the bolt handel and D&T it. He also ordered the barrel (Adam & Bennet) fitted and finshed chambered it for me. The trigger is a Bold optma. The finish is Brownells Alumahyde II. The stock is from Richards summer clearance sale. The price was too good to pass up. I am not realy happy with the gap around the trigger gaurd. I looked at my A-bolt 30-06 and 1966 vintage Rem 700 in 25-06. They seamed to have a bit of a gap also. I was conserned that the trigger gaurd would be locked in the stock so I left the gap. I did thin it to the dementions of my A-bolt. I made a big mistake with the first trigger gaurd by thinning it too much. Another leson I learned was it would be better to do all the bedding work before the metal finish. Anyway it's final done and ready for the range. Ralph P.S. I will do a post on the next two builds.
  20. I watch gold rush. It is kind of interesting, I only have one say. "What are they thinking?" To gambel on their familes safty. Uproot the wife and kids and take them to a gold camp in the wilderness. Useing water from a stream without any decontamination or purafication. DUMB! They should have been more conserned with mineing than with building cabins. Make the money then bring up the families. Better yet learn how to mine first. When it is all said and done this will be a "seamed like a good idea at the time" story. To have thought thing through would'nt have a good story. I wonder how maney other guys with their back aginst the wall are thinking they could do it better? You know that net works are looking for the next reality hit. I have been thinking of something to pitch as a new series. Maybe a blind midget that fights crime, rescues abused dogs from their bakery. Wait isn't that already on TLC (The Learning Chanel)? Ralph

  23. Always looking for good examples of Yugo 48 and M48BO varrients.

  24. As an aside and kind of on topic. Years agoe I read the bio. of the Jap. solider that did'nt surender until the 1970"s. He said that he would find/steal US 30cal ammo and shoot them in his 7.7. They were not very accurate but killed game and a few civilans. Ralph
  25. Yuo do have style and class. I would love to have such a place. Ralph
