  1. Tinker, nice catch. You are correct, I meant 1888. Thanx. Now the bad news. You are henceforth designated as my official proofreader.
  2. The 8x57J was the original round for the 1988 comission rifles by Mauser. They had a nominal bore of .318. The later 8x57JS has a bore of .323 and is loaded to much higher pressure. Unless you have an original unmodified bore pre 1904 mauser you can use the 8x57JS. The 8x57JS as sold here in the US is commonly known as the 8mm Mauser round. No you are not stupid or you wouldn't have asked. The only stupid question is the one that went unasked.
  3. $450.............for a parts gun. RUN,RUN FAST. Second thought, laugh in his face, then RUN. JM2C
  4. More specifics? How much? Which TYPE Arisaka? The lower the TYPE # the more value, generally speaking. A general idea of what parts will be required to make it fly? Sorry but your request is very vague. A few pics would be very helpfull in evaluating value and condition.
  5. The mount type you are describing is called a "Scout Mount" which uses a LER scope mounted on original mil-surp sight base. Been around a long time. The late Col. Cooper was a big advocate for them. There are many different makers out there for the more common mil-surps but I doubt any are made for sale for a Carcano. GO FOR IT.
  6. If you are going to go to all that work to create a truly unique one-off. Why not do same for caliber. How bout a 7mmx54 russian. Lee will make a set of dies for bout $60 and 7mm bullets abound in the reloading world. Just a thought.
  7. In experienced hands MIG would be my first choice. As stated it is easy for inexperienced user to contaminate weld with tungsten. TIG or stick would be a tossup for 2nd place. Again experience of operator being paramount. O/A would be my last on the list because of overheating concerns. JM2C
  8. Well I tried to get screwed but they were sold out. Contacted seller, he is restocking and will relist. Am ordering 2 sets so with second item shipping for free, that'd only $17 shipping included.
  9. You're a good guy Mr Semi. You do your parents proud.
  10. 742, I picked up several hundred 7.62 nato blanks in a trade in the 70's. I asked the same questions. Got the same answers. Some pro some con. After firing bout 1 out of 10 split at the neck. From my point of view that gave credence to the (rejects) votes and I just used em for 4th July and New Yrs Eve. but never tried to reload em. Just smashed em with a hammer and scrapped em after firing. Just wasn't worth the risk. JMO
  11. One more point on the not a lawyer thing. Supposedly the ATFE measures all barrel lenghts from the breech face to the muzzle. So if you have a revolver with what is known as say a 4" barrel ATFE would add the cylinder and cylinder gap to that calling it a approx 6 1/2" barrel. If someone screws a 16" barrel on a revolver they have broken the law by ATFE standards. Or something like that
  12. Not a Lawyer, nor have I ever played one on TV. Seem to remember it is illegal to exceed 16" barrel on a pistol just as it is illegal to have less than 16" on a rifle. If a pistol is fitted with more than 16" barrel it must also have a buttstock and meet 26" overall criteria making it legally a rifle. Or something like that.
  13. World is choc full of weird, viscious, nasty little microbes just waiting to attack an unsuspecting victim. Knew a fella that got (tuleremia) not sure of spelling. Common name "rabbit fever" from a cut on his hand while cleaning rabbits. He was screwed up for the rest of his life nerve wise.
  14. Gotta Love It. Kids, Guns, Big Grins, Meat in Freezer, And Memories that last a Lifetime. Good Going Gramps, and Thanx for sharing.
  15. TIME FOR OSAMA BIN BAMA AND HIS H.L.S. PUPPET JANET TO GET OFF THE PC BANDWAGON AND GET TO PROFILING. I JUST DON'T GIVE A CRAP ABOUT THE FEELINGS OF HIS MUSLIM BROTHERS.
  16. Oh Damn, Now Ya Got Me Skeeeert
  17. WE ARE SAVED! Since our ILLUSTRIOUS Messiah from Kenya vowed early on not to sign any Healthcare Debacle that increased the DEFICIT even one penny. ........................................................................................................... "Douglas Elmendorf, Congressional Budget Office As director of the Congressional Budget Office, the non-partisan budget scorekeeper for Congress, Elmendorf is in charge of the analysts who'll figure out whether the numbers in the health insurance blueprint add up. "Without meaningful reforms, the substantial costs of many current proposals ... would be much more likely to worsen the long-run budget outlook than to improve it," he said." ........................................................................................................... OH YEA VERILY, I SAY UNTO THE MASSES THAT WE ARE SAVED BY THE MESSIAH. FOR HE WILL SURELY NEVER SIGN A BILL THAT COSTS THE TAXPAYERS TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS. Yeah Right This is the Democraptic Controlled Senate's X-mas present to their subjects. BEND OVER AND COUGH
  18. Barnes and Nosler make solid copper boolits. Also called E-bullets. Bullets need to be heavy metal that is soft enough to imprint rifling and seal bore. Aluminun is way to light for anything but point blank range shooting. JMO
  19. LR threads are 1.100 major dia. all are 12 TPI SR threads are .980 " " 91 threads are .985 " " Could possibly lap 91 barrel into SR reciever using Clover Compound but don't know for sure. Starting out 5 thou to small in major dia. would be a No No. A LR barrel shank could be turned down for a 91 or a SR depending on minor thread dia. I would check with Mike/zlr, Clemson, Don Markey or another actual gunsmith before attempting either.
  20. Quality hunting time with your boys, a one shot kill, and meat in the freezer. WHAT COULD BE BETTER?...............NUTTIN
  21. Your problem is perfectly obvious. Next time don't buy a bolt unless it has lugs attached.
  22. OK, getting old and short term memory is crumbling. While skulking and reading old posts a few weeks ago. I read a signature line that I found quite profound. Here's what I remember: "Something about an honest mistake and not rectifying it makes it not a mistake or the person honest." Something to that effect anyway. Can anybody help me find it? Thanx
  23. 500 million cut from Medicare and an old lady thinks he is the Messiah from Kenya. That's one Stupid Old Lady. Because she is definitely SOL. I like the new POOP bumperstickers. PRISONER OF OBAMA'S POLICITICS..........SAD BUT TRUE, SO TRUE
  24. OK spotted this one while browsing old dead threads. This action is actually a 1893 Mauser Made by Loewe, Berlin in 1894 for Brasil. As such, you should have had to do no paperwork or pay any transfer fees on it. It is not legally a gun of any type. It is classified simply as an Antique. Mfg. prior to Jan 1, 1899. It was made 14 yr before the first 1908. Give away is the Flat bottom bolt face and the integral guide rib in the left reciever rail. IMO the 93 is the very slickest of the slick actions because of the FL guide rib. Definitely keep it in a lower pressure range cartridge. 6.5's are Schweeet and would be a perfect match for this action. Good Catch just my 2 cents worth, ya get what ya pay for.
