  1. Tony, think in angles, not straight lines. By removing matl. from bottom of sizer you make the remainder of contact area inside the die correspndingly smaller in diameter for the entire depth of the die. Judicious use of a bench grinder for rough cut. Then a small machinist square or a dial caliper and a smooth cut file to square end with body is good enough. Don't remove more than the existing slight taper or radius at bottom of die. Of course facing on a lathe would be preferable and quicker but not the only way to skin this cat. JM2c
  2. As a very slightly necked straight taper case, removing matl from base of sizer will squeeze em a little tighter. And likely solve problem. Easier to adjust ammo to cylinder if possible than vice versa. 4-D rents 44-40 reamers. http://www.4-dproducts.com/displayitem.php?rowid=451&tname=rental
  3. Tony, This advice from the last link you posted sounds awfully familiar.
  4. Back in the day, scopes weren't purged or nitrogen filled. Originals were assembled by disassembling scope and soft soldering the rings in position on the scope body.
  5. Tony have you diagnosed why cartridges won't chamber completely? Always best to know what actual problem is before you try guessing at a fix. Rimmed cases headspace off the rim. So if the rim recess is cut deep enough the chamber should be deep enough. But if the chambers were cut with a worn reamer they could be to small in dia. Do a chamber cast. Or at least use dicum or marking pen on a few rounds and shove them in to show where binding is occuring. Digging around in a finished chamber with a drill bit is far from kosher. Also problem could be tolerance stacking. If chamber is tight but within spec. and your dies are loose but within spec. that could be the problem. Try dropping factory ammo in and see how it fits. Maybe your die isn't sizing down close enough to the rim and leaving a slight bulge ahead of base. Many pistol dies have a taper going into mouth. In which case, easy fix would be to remove material from bottom of sizer to make cases size farther down. I once had a Colt Officers Model Match .38 spl that I had to not only shorten the sizer body for but also had to run cases back through the sizer for the top 1/2 after seating bullets. JM2c
  6. That's what I did. PM Tony aka the Flatulant Fowl for his E-mail and Paypal it. http://www.sporterizing.com/index.php?showtopic=9708
  7. Cybersecurity Act of 2012 is DOA as of last week. IMO didn't stand a chance even before the Mag Ban was tagged on.
  8. Amen, Do the math. With a major thread dia [minor spec not at hand at moment] of .980 and a 300 WinMag case being .513 just ahead of the belt. Leaves .467 / 2 = less than .233 chamber wall because of minor thread dia. I'd pass and find a LRLS action to build on.
  9. From here. http://www.turkmauser.com/models.aspx Yes, SR diameter shank but fitted to an inner torgue ring like the LR. Because it is a GEW-98 made to Turk specs. Turks of the day were the ultimate military rifle scroungers and their plethora of model #'s and modifications in an effort to standardize is a real pain to keep track of. JM2c
  10. Misunderstood question, sorry bout that.
  11. I have no personal experience with a K-Kale. If I was going to the time and expense to build a sporter around a magnum cartridge, I would go with a LRLS reciever such as a FN or as Spiris said a VZ24.
  12. Sorry Dude, ya gotta measure your reciever/bolt and cut/thread the shank to fit. No telling how much was removed to true front ring when hand guard ridge was removed. JM2c
  13. gitano said, Nor would I. Nor do I consider myself an egg-spurt by any means. I'm 63 yr old and built my first sporter in 1967. A m1917 Eddystone, {one bear of an action}. That said, I also have opinions. One of which is that I know I'm not as smart as Parker Ackley, Townsen Whelen, or any number of other firearms reworking predecessors who pushed the limits back in the day. I most assuredly don't think I'm as smart as Paul Mauser was. And it was him that designed the 1893 a long time before WWII and WWI both, actually it was put into production 5 yr before the Spanish American War. It was he that realized that as good as the 93, 94, 95, 96's were they still needed improving and designed the 98 to address all the pre-98's shortcomings. Which was primarily [gas handling] capabilities. Because I know how dumb I am compared to Paul I never advise exceeding the 46,000cup pressure level of the 7x57 that he designed the 93 to handle. And realistically why should I. After all there is nothing I wouldn't consider hunting on the N American continent with a 7x57 exception for the Brown bear and only then out of respect for the Bear. There are 98 actions aplenty for building hot rods on. So in summary not because I'm an egg-spurt or think I'm so smart but because I know how dumb I am. That is the truth I've discovered for myself after 45 yrs of sporterizing mil-surps. JM2c
  14. 22 LR super 14 and a 10" 7mm TCU on a Contender frame. Dude that 375 JDJ is a powerhouse.
  15. Looks pretty good. How did you remove old bluing? Toilet bown cleaner?
  16. Main gripe I've hear about the A&B's isn't that they are inaccurate but that they foul easily. I've only had one, but lapped it before installing and it was fine. BTW it was also a 280 Rem. Lapping a barrel isn't hard to do and only takes about 1/2 hr once you make the lap. JM2c
  17. Operation Enduring Freedom began in 2001. 10 1/2 yrs, billions of dollars, the best in the world Special Forces as trainers, and O-hole and Napolitano think throwing more money and US Border Patrol Agents into the fray is going to make any difference? Yeah right! They've after all done such a stellar job along the Mexican Border haven't they. Sorry, I just can't believe that flushing more Tax Dollars and American lives down the toilet in Afgoonistan is going to make any difference. Bring them all home, task them with securing OUR borders, save billions in wasted tax dollars, and save American lives. It matters not what we do then, now, or another ten yrs down the road where Afgoonistan, Iraq, or any other Muslim controlled country is concerned. They will still hate us while taking our money. And plot to kill us at every chance. Look at a topo map of the Afgoony/Pakistani border. A machine gun implacement every 1/4 mi across the ridge tops would be the only way to secure it. Who is going to build, man, and supply such an arrangement for hundreds of miles. The Afgoonies would just steal the weapons and sell/give them to our enemies just as they have done for the last 10 1/2 yrs. As we speak Karzai is holding talks with the tribal leaders, Taliban, and Al Queda just waiting for us to leave but continue to pour US Tax dollars into their toilet.
  18. Napolitano in Afgoonistan, Qatar, Israel, and Belgium???? Dec. 2010 http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing- ... fghanistan WHY???? Her and SIX ADDITIONAL AGENTS OF DHS????? If these SIX are ADDITIONAL, How many are already there??? Isn't that the State Dept's Job ????? Flying contingents of A-hole around the world to KISS ASSES on O-holes behalf??? I guess she is so stupid that she thinks it is now her job to protect these other countries while our borders go unprotected to the INVASION of illegals. She has done such a shitty job here, now she feels qualified to teach others how to do a shitty job of protecting their borders. How many millions of TAX DOLLARS did this little jaunt to the middle east cost???? THEN THIS, http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/ ... story.html Not that I have anything against BAD GUYS getting shot but WTF is a BUNCH of DHS Agents doing in Afgoonistan??? That's a long damn ways from any US Border!!! Haven't we given the Afgoonies BILLIONS OF TAX DOLLARS in cash and equipment support so they can shoot their own BAD GUYS???? Our own border is a Sieve for ILLEGALS to the tune of thousands daily and O-holes HEAD of DHS is half way around the world with a contingent of agents that are being paid to protect our US BORDERS. Not only are our US Military Services wasting billions of dollars and untold US Soldier's lives playing WORLD COPS. But now the A-HOLES in DC under the guidance of O-HOLE are sending our COPS to be somebody elses BORDER PROTECTION. Where does this CRAP END???
  19. Again I applaud your DIY spirit. Even when the majority of your posts contain "How Not to Do" content. Again I say "skinny barrels heat walk" that is why they are suitable for hunters who want that first shot to go exactly where they intend. But unsuitable for primarily bench target shooters who don't want to wait 5 minutes between shots. Being a hunter, I'm willing to wait at the range between shots so as not to carry another 2 pounds of barrel around in the field. I utilize the wait time to watch and visit with other shooters. There is a lot to be learned from picking brains. 5 shots from any barrel in fairly quick succession and you get a lot of heat. You might want to check out Steve Wagners pages. IIRC he has a [how to make a barrel lap] that will smooth out the bore on your A&B. Carry on Dude, have fun but be carefull.
  20. Oh Dude, Now you tell me. Is that why all the stinky black smoke????
  21. What exactly are your goals with this particular rifle? Because your posts, questions, and actions are all quite perplexing. You had an original barrel that was capable of 1" groups. You pulled it off rather than striving to replicate the conditions that consistantly created the 1" groups. Rather than trying to stabilize original. You replaced it with another skinny barrel that only shoots 3" groups. Perfect example of cause and effect. You never ascertained initial cause so all your efforts are just creating unsatisfactory results. IMO, the place to start is at the beginning. JM2c
  22. There is a lot more to OA welding than just tip size and puddle. You have to have proper regulated pressure of both gases. Proper tip size for matl. thickness. Proper adjustment of handle valves for correct flame type at tip for welding to be done. Proper fill rod type for matl.being welded. Coat hanger is OK for a gate hinge but not worth spit on a rifle bolt. Then and only then do you get many hours of practice before assaulting another poor unsuspecting rifle bolt. I applaud your enthusiasm and DIY spirit but it is best to learn to walk before you attemtp running.
  23. Especially the public rope stretching exercise part.
  24. That's why I was thinking a question that is easy for Shooters yet vague in composition without clues as to the answer. Such as the non SAAMI example.
