  1. I have a K98 mauser brought home after WWII. It has been worked on, and many original parts taken off. I want to replace the barrel with another step barrel. I need the complete rear and front sight assemblies. I saw a new in the white barrel on Numrich site for $107.00. But, I cannot fine the sights. Will the sight assemblies slide onto the new barrel?

I want to use the rifle with open sights! I need all the help I can get to try and salvage this fine rifle.

Since you want to replace an existing barrel and you are looking for

a frontsight and rearsight assembly, may I suggest to use same of

the removed barrel. If its the same standard model, you would be

    all set. Greetings, Gunny.

  2. Well, I got my first parer weight today. While removing the rest of the crest from a VZ24 I found a crack in the receiver ring. The crack runs perpendicular to the axis of the bore and is located directly above the primary torque shoulder. It looks like whoever installed the barrel torqued the hell out of it. It took us a lot of torque to get the barrel off. We had to use a long cheater bar along with the barrel vise to get the receiver off. The face of the barrel had an imprint of the primary torque shoulder on it that you could see and feel. If you guys have a real hard time getting the barrel off be sure to check the receiver ring for any cracks. I think there is a chemical that welders use to check for cracks. It's a two part spray that migrates through cracks to make them visible. I don't remember the name but I'm sure someone here does. I'll try and use it on the receivers when I find it.

The product used for that method is called Dye-Check. It's a 3part check with a red dye, a remover and a

developer. The developer is srayed on and leaves a white powdery coat on which you can see the red dye as it creeps

out of the crack. Magnaflux is a different thing all together where you a apply an electrical current and spay on

an iron powder.the magnetic field will collect the powder and indicate any cracks

I hope this will answer your question.

  3. Here is a mount that I made to fit my desires, it was already bubba"d when I started.

    Hi MR1

A terriffic looking mount you have made. It's the lowest I've seen.

You barely clear the scope. It tempts me, to make one like it.

Do you have a millingmachine, or all made by hand?

  4. Is there a Weaver side mount that will work on a #4? They dont list any in their chart, but with the selection of detach side mounts they have, I would think there is one that will adapt to a flat sided #4.

No, Weaver does not make a sidemount for either the no.1 or the 4 or 5.

But Williams makes a neat one the SM-70 for the No 1 Mk3 and the

SM-71 for the flatsiders. They are available fro Brownell's and retails

for under $50 with the rings, I think. I haven't installed one yet,

but by the looks, it should be pretty straight forward. But again,

you have to drill & tap, which should be easy.

  5. Fellas,

Here are the pictures Brad has referenced:

Here is a picture of two possibilities for bolt handles on Enfields:

Here is what you can do with the ejector boxes:

    Here is a straightened triggerguard:

(Note the 8x68s cartridge propping the TG up ;) )

Sorry for not getting them up sooner, but I've been busier than a one-armed paperhanger on a deadline the last couple weeks.

    Thanks!

I am somewhat new to this forum.

Some 15 years ago, long before digital photography, I reworked a P14 to .300 win mag.

I used a good barrel from a Model 1917 (30-06). Cut the Threads longer to fit the P14 receiver.

Recut the chamber (checking headspace al the time).

Left bolthandle as is, same with the safety. Used a magazine box from "Numrich", same as for .375 H&H.

Opened the cartrigdewell a little bit and lengthend the follower somewhat to fit the cartrigdes.

Shaped the rearbridge like a Remington and installed a Redfield one piece base with a 6X All American scope

and put it in a cheap hardwood stock from century arms, when they were still here in Montreal.

I wish, I hadn't gotten rid of it. But that how the cookie crumbles sometimes.

    It shot like a varminter.

  6. I recenlty bought one of the norwegian made 98k target barrels in .308 Win. from sportsmans guide and would like to build a sporter rifle out of it. Nothing fancy, and nothing expensive. What type of action would you recommend? Where is a good place to buy an inexpensive action to mate with this barrel. I plan on taking barrel and action to my gunsmith and have him rebarrel and true up action. Would like a bent bolt and am thinking of putting on an FN style bolt shroud and a Timney Trigger with safety to ease scope mounting. This is my first mauser, I have built a similar rifle out of an old 1903 springfield receiver I bought form the CMP and a heavy barrel I bought online. Turned out very nice. Am hoping to do the same with this.

Check out " Samco". They have 24/47 barreld actions for $ 109.00 for sale.

Naturally, they also have complete rifles (excellent) for $159.00.
