  1. My 8 year contract with the Army ran up in October, so I'm a civilian until I can get that contract signed, just waiting on my school for paperwork. The only time I spent up at Ft. Lewis was for deployment and the occasional FTX for my reserve unit. The funny thing is that now I have a degree, but I sure don't feel smarter. So far the only thing I've done with my education is get my Dad to switch from expensive proton pump inhibitor medication (Protonix) to generic prilosec, which made his wallet and insurance company happy. Gotta love all those uses for a biochem degree. On the other side I'm in great shape to become a pharmacist if I want to go that route. But right now I'm sick of school and ready to go back to work. There are a couple jobs in the Air Force that I'm interested in, Air Commando, Chopper pilot, AF Security, AF Signal (best satellite equipment in the military), so hopefully they will have a job for me. So far the recruiters have said plenty, but I'm not going to count on it until I've signed something. Of course they can't give me a contract until I get that paperwork from school, which opens up again on the 7th....So please keep me and the wife in your prayers for getting into the AF without too much fuss, the recruiters told me that it'll go smooth, but I've been told that before.... 2. The mark for the Kokura Arsenal is a circle with three half circle "Petals" coming off of it, but the marks for Toyo Kogyo and Tokyo Juki Kogyo subcontractors were the same cicle with petals and another marking beside it. This is how one would type an Arisaka rifle, I am only assuming that the same holds true for swords. If it does hold true, this sight might help you identify the other mark. I do not know why the flowers would be "wrong" other than being fake or a repair job. http://www.radix.net/~bbrown/japanese_markings.html Jimro
  3. I agree that the Buck Vangard is a helluva knife, well designed blade and handle. Jimro
  4. Well folks, I'm living in a trailer in Tenino, Washington. Let the trailer trash jokes begin. The trailer in question is a 1995 year model 31 footer with a 14 foot tipout, so there is enough room to live, not a lot of room for gun projects. I took my wifes computer and my computer and made one dual boot computer out of them, so she has her desktop and harddrive and I have mine. All in all we have about 280 square feet of living space and it's just right for the two of us. The only problem is that I made the first mistake in buying a used trailer, and didn't know exactly what to look for. So after fixing all the leaky plumbing I find out that there is a really good chance that there is a siginificant portion of the roof that is dry rotted. How did I find out? Well there was this tinsy tiny little leak from the bathroom ceiling that made a significant puddle on the bathroom floor. If you want to see dry rot gone wild, check out this trailer restoration. http://rvforsaleguide.com/trailer-repair/r...iler-repair.htm Anyways I've sealed everything up pretty tight (Permetex RTV sealant isn't just for engines in my book), and hopefully I'll get time to pull roof apart to check and replace what needs replacing sometime next year. All my reloading gear is at a buddies house, he want's to set up his back room for reloading and I figured he could have my gear since the Air Force will probably not look kindly upon me reloading on base. I finished my BS in Chemistry and am just waiting on paperwork to get down to the recruiting office to get my butt into the Air Force's Officer Training School. I can't wait to get back to work, so please pray that the Air Force has a job for me. Most of my guns are at my older brothers place and with my Aunt, and the worst part is I now live really close to my favorit range, which may only stretch out to 200 but that is plenty for plinking. I have only gone shooting once since we moved in, I must remedy that soon. I think I'll bring my 22 rifle here for plinking and keep the 45 handy for when things go bump in the night. Anyways, now that I have steady internet access expect to see more of me, at least until I ship out for training. Happy New Year, Jimro

    Good stuff

    Amen to that. Jimro
  6. To kill, to kill, to kill without mercy. However, killing does take a toll on the mental and emotional well being of just about any well adjusted individual, whether they have been trained to kill or not. If the act of taking a human life does not affect you in some way, I would be scared. Very few people can kill without emotion. Jimro
  7. The ejector forms a lever with the extractor claw, if it hit dead center on the primer it would still have half the diameter of the case head, more than enough distance to provide movement. The backwards pull of the extractor and the forward push of the ejector are what give you the good fling. Try swapping out the bolt stop assembly (with ejector) and bolt from the working mauser and put them into the non working mauser, if that fixes the problem then you need to check out the thickness of the non working ejector. I've had ejectors bind in an unmodified mauser simply because they got gritty, or I swapped out ejectors. So try making the ejector blade thinner to fit easily through the slot on the bolt head. Try cycling the action and watching to see if the ejector blade gets pushed into it's slot quickly and on time. Also check the extractor claw for burrs. Check to make sure the the case head and the bolt face have proper fit and clearance. Jimro
  8. A Dell, HP, Compaq, Gateway, or (shudder) Emachine all make affordable computers if you shop around. I could not build you the same system for their prices. Your local geek shop can probably build you a box, operating system included, for 200-400 dollars since you aleady have a monitor, keyboard, etc, which might be a better deal if you ever need it serviced. And if you buy local, you are supporting a local business, and hopefully they will support you with a great pc and customer support. Jimro
  9. I skimmed through the manual for your mobo, I try to work on only one issue at a time, so I recommend putting your jp2 jumpers back the way it came, resetting the CMOS, and seeing if things boot up and the front USB works. If there is no monitor signal, is there a beep code? Are you using onboard video or an AGP or PCI card? Most often USB is not a problem, so once you have verified it good, move on to sound. Your JP2 connectors are explained on page 21, make sure the case cable is compatible with JP2 or you won't get anything. The only front sound I've ever had to deal with is just a remoting cable that went out a PCI slot and hooked into the normal sound jacks, rerouting the signal to the front of the case. I do not know what case you are using to try to decode wire colors. Post that and I may be able to see if things don't line up like they should. Another thing is to see if you are on the F10 bios or not. Jimro
  10. Try these bullets in the 35 Whelen, they are a little more expensive, but if you use them only for sight in and hunting the cost is minimal http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/...leitemid=166406 http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/...leitemid=707005 http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/...leitemid=568841 I personally like the Barns triple shock because it has a great reputation for accuracy. I loaded up some 308 rounds with 165 grain triple shocks for a close in elk round, and elk season starts tomorrow. Hope I have better luck than I did for open buck. Jimro
  11. The 380 is a good option for light recoil. Remember, pistols don't shock the system the way a rifle will, so having a larger diameter bullet disturbs more tissue, makes bigger holes, and bigger holes bleed more. I'd carry a 380 ACP over a .22 any day of the week. Jimro
  12. Instead of altering the ejector blade to hit the brass closer to the rim, take a little off so that the main point of contact is closwer to the primer. If you think of the ejector blade as a lever, having it impact near the rim will give you more advantage, but less movement. Having the ejector hit closer to the primer will give you more movement but less advantage. When you have a loaded cartrige there is a lot of extra mass up front that can make use of the momentum supplied by the hit near the rim, but an empty has much less mass up front and will just wiggle there. And ejector blades are cheap. Jimro
  13. The 300 Win Mag is capable of killing elk at ranges most hunters have no business shooting. Most of my buddies who hunt elk where long ranges are common swear by the 300 win mag. Of course a 30-06 with 180 grainers will kill and elk just as dead, but you might have to stalk closer. The 338-06 is a wonderful round, just expensive to buy commercial ammo. The 338 Win Mag is a great choice, but not as "flat" shooting as the 300. The 35 Whelen has nothing to prove as an elk hunting cartrige, but once again not as "flat". But if long range is a factor, best bet is the 300 Win Mag, 190-210 grain bullets and sighting in 3-4 inches high at 100. Jimro
  14. Make sure the Master/Slave setting is correct on the drives, don't use Cable Select because some mobo/drive combos do not like that. If the BIOS POST shows that the CDRom is present, then you need to change the boot sequence to select the cdrom somewhere in the boot sequence (sometimes it is IDE0,1,2,3 or just CDROM). Then you need to make sure you have a bootable CD in the drive (I'm sure you have this, but I have to be thorough). If this doesn't fix your problems then I don't know what advice to offer. Jimro
  15. I would like to clarify my previous statement, mainly that I am all for open source information, just not direct to consumer advertising. Eli Lilly was for quite a long period an "ethical" company, only advertising to doctors and pharmacists, but now who hasn't heard of strattera? I support having public library subscriptions to medical and science journals, as well as having the Public Library of Science, and Public Library of Medicine. This allows everyone access to the same raw data showing how the study was conducted, and the researchers and methods used. This means that those who are actively seeking something better will get the information that they need by looking for it. There is no way a thirty second commercial can convey all the pertinent information about a drug therapy. And while there may be doctors resistant to change, there are patients who are resistant to a doctors advice because they've seen a commercial about a pill that can cure the symptoms they are having. As far as NSAID's specifically COX-2 inhibitors, I will quote Paracelus, "The dose makes the poison". Or as my friend Dan says, "There are no toxic substances, only toxic levels." I just had blood drawn yesterday to get my g6pd tested to find out if I could recieve the antimalarial drug primaquine. Jimro
  16. Very nice rifle. I hope to find a few more old finns marked as "Russian Nagant's".... Jimro
  17. In my humble opinion, The reciever is probably safe enough for a low pressure chambering, like a 45 ACP, but I wouldn't trust it for anything hotter. That being said, get yourself a new reciever and start over. The cost of another reciever is a cheap lesson, hurting yourself because your rifle wasn't safe is expensive. Jimro
  18. Welcome aboard member 227, aka MorganBoss. Anyone ever watch the "stonecutters" episode of the Simpsons? Jimro
  19. Everything said so far is true, but it is also true that the average Pharmacuetical company spends three times the amount on advertising than it does on research. I believe that DTC, direct to consumer, advertising is unethical for prescription (aka, ask your doctor about....to see if it's right for you) drugs. Advertising to doctors through JAMA, NEJM, so that they know when new medications are available is another story all together. Jimro
  20. Well, tell him we miss him if you get the chance. Jimro
  21. Firefly was an excellent series, and "Serenity" was an excellent movie. So was "Cowboy Bebop", not for everybody, but give it a shot to see if you like it. I like stories about a group of misfits wandering the stars in a hunk of junk spaceship trying to earn a living Jimro
  22. Went down to the crossroads, tried to flag a ride, went down to the crossroads, tried to flag a ride. nobody seemed to know me, everybody passed me by. Robert Johnson, redone by everyone. Jimro
  23. I want to marry you. Isn't that what you want too? B.B. King "Riding with the King" is a great album. Jimro
  24. America is the promised land for many who want to earn a living. America is also the promised land for those who want to live off of another mans living. I have high hopes for the legal immigrants coming from the former communist countries, they cherish freedom in a way that I seldom see from natural born citizens. Nor do I have a problem with legal immigrants from hispanic countries. The ones who work hard and know that learning english is the key to success, become succesful. They live the American dream. I met a lot of these guys in the Army, from Mexico, El Salvador, Venezuala. But I am all for closing the border with Mexico. There is no place in our society for illegal immigrants. Jimro
