  1. Buying a milsurp doesn't keep a factory worker employed. And the import companies know they can reach more of their target audience by advertising in the Shotgunnews or gunsandammo instead of American Rifleman. A few years ago a friend was cleaning out and found her fathers old copies of American Rifleman. I really enjoyed the articles by Askins and being introduced to the writings of Capstick. Jimro
  2. One of the rules of the world is that old weapons end up in Africa. Jimro

    Soft Argies

Got it, by re-using the carbon donor material it slowed the rate of transfer leaving the steel soft. Makes me wonder why they were pinching pennies to need to re-use pack material. Jimro
  4. The only "singles" that I own are: A 1911 and Savage 10. The rest; Mosins, Mausers, and AK's are all redundant. The Wife's Glock is also a single, but it's hers. Jimro

    Soft Argies

Hmmm... pack hardening shouldn't cause a soft surface unless it is done wrong and causes carbon emission from the steel instead of carbon uptake... Makes me wonder what went wrong. Also makes me wonder if the 1906 Obendorf I bought from my brother is going to be soft.... And don't worry about "sounding" harsh, everybody sounds curt through text. Jimro
  6. As a complete aside.... When adjusting indirect fire; "short" means nearside impact, this is corrected by an "add" adjustment "long" means far side impact, corrected by a "drop" adjustment "Left" means the round impacted right "Right" means the round impacted left If the rounds need a vertical adjustment the corrections "up" and "down" are used. The observer calls the adjustments, and the Fire Direction Center translates those adjustments into elevation/deflection numbers that the gun crews can use to put steel on target. The preferred method of delivery is perpendicular to the axis of friendly advance. This means that the adjustments "short" or "long" can really be "left" or "right" adjustments for the gun crew. The reason for not having overhead fires is that if there is a "short" round it won't cause spontaneous bowel evacuation, if the fires are perpendicular the "short" round will appear as a "Left" or "Right" adjustment to the observer. However, Marine Infantry Platoons have organic 60mm mortar teams that have a hard time displacing to 90 degrees of the target, so it is much more likely that Marines will have overhead fires during offensive operations. The smallest Army unit to have organic mortars is a Company. But in the Indiana Jones movie I think "Short Round" applies as an affectionate nickname, kinda like the 9mm Browning Short isn't really "grownup" like the 9x21 Largo (meaning Long). Kinda like we call children "half pint" but not adults "full pint". Jimro

    Soft Argies

Argentine made receivers are the ones that tend to be soft according to most sources. Jimro
  9. At this point in my life it is just not worth the time and effort to do some of the metalwork. But I still like to play around with old rifles. So it makes sense to pay someone to bend the bolt or install a barrel. It isn't that I can't do it, I have in the past, just that my free time is pulled a dozen different directions and I'm ok with paying for professional help on a project. It used to be that I'd take a rifle or two down to my Dad and we would use his machine shop to do the work, but with the overtime going on where he works (hydroelectric dam) and we could just have fun working a project. Now my sister and her daughter moved back in so when I visit normally it's a lot more visiting than working on projects. Maybe when I retire in 2020 (or thereabouts) I'll get back to doing it all by myself, but until then I'm ok with slowing down the pace of a project and farming out some of the work. Jimro
  10. Federal match primers are known to be soft, you might try CCI BR-2's. They came recommended to me by a guy who used them in his SR-25 after he had a slam fire using Federal. Jimro
  11. The 7x57 would be my first choice, followed by the 6.5x55 because it would require fewer resources to make per round than any of the other choices. A 9 grain difference in bullet weight doesn't sound like much per unit, but it is 6.5% advantage in lead that is your biggest non recoverable resource from training expenditures. Brass is 100% recyclable, powder use will be similar between all the cartridges mentioned, primer cost is the same. Jimro
  12. I've got some milsurp 30-06 that I necked up to 9.3 mm (I necked up to 8mm first, wished I'd had a 35 caliber expander for a second step but I didn't crack any necks going from 8 to 9.3 mm). Next step is to trim back to 62mm then fireform the brass to move the shoulder forward. Since Karl has had such great success with "The Load", 13 grains of Red Dot, I'm thinking that I do something similar to that for a fireforming load. Since .366 caliber bullets are expensive, and .365 caliber Makarov pistol bulles are cheap, but reloading data is non-existent for pushing a 95 grain pill from such a bit case I'm wondering if 13 grains of pistol powder will be enough to form the brass. I don't have any Red Dot on hand, but I keep Unique on the bench which has a slower burn rate than Red Dot. I guesstimate that the large case volume, low projectile weight, and slower powder will let me get away with the substitution without pressure. I also think that it would be loads of fun to have a load for "explosive" results on water filled targets, and a 95 grain hollowpoint at 1,800+ fps would do just that. Let me know what you think, any experience doing similar stuff with other cartridges. Jimro

  14. flaco, That's called a sideways insult. Next time insult me by name, and do it proper you commie. Allow me to point out the stupidity of your sideways insult, your "if/then" statement is based on the premise that every newspaper prints the same letters to the editor as the NYT. This is demonstrably not the case. The moment that letter was published it was commented upon and referenced by no less than two blogs that I read regularly. So even though I do not read fish wrappers I still benefit from what little "news" comes through that stale media. Jimro
  15. Those WMD's the inspectors couldn't find still haven't been found. But possession of WMD's isn't justification for war. Jimro
  16. Powell has always felt that diplomacy must truly be exhausted before military action can even be discussed. As such he has more in line with Obama's stated policies of diplomacy than McCain's. Powell also advised against Iraq. After the way Powell was treated by the GWBush administration I can't blame him for throwing in with the other party. Jimro
  17. McCain. A man who has bled for his country, sacrificed for her, has more love for her than the man who said: “You know, the truth is that right after 9/11, I had a (flag) pin. Shortly after 9/11, particularly because as we’re talking about the Iraq war, that became a substitute for, I think, true patriotism, which is speaking out on issues that are of importance to our national security, I decided I won’t wear that pin on my chest.” “And it's not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.” “I don't understand when people are going around worrying about, ‘We need to have English only.’ They want to pass a law, ‘We want just, uh, we want English only.’ Now, I agree that immigrants should learn English. I agree with that. But, but, understand this. Instead of worrying about whether, uh, immigrants can learn English - they'll learn English -- you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish. You should be thinking about how can your child become bilingual.” “We can't drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times ... and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK. That's not leadership. That's not going to happen.” bHo clearly wants the US to change based upon the whims of the world. America is not his love. Jimro
  18. Politicians aren't saints. Palin isn't Dubya II. Calling someone ignorant isn't a sign of ignorance on their part, only ignorance on your part to understand their view. I went to Evergreen, I know all about ignorance. Jimro
  19. And nine out of ten journalists are registered Democrats. Gotta love the attempt of trial by public opinion, especially when you can spoon feed the public an opinion. You know maybe it makes sense to appoint an engineer the head of the department of transportation. Then again I could be wrong and an artist with a degree in Russian Literature is really the right person for that job. "Under Investigation" = innocent until proven guilty (unless the press don't like you) and "unresolved" often means "unsubstantiated". It doesn't take much to make an accusation these days. There are a lot of quotes by folks no longer associated with Palin. Guess getting fired left a bitter taste in their mouth. This is why I don't buy newspapers, nothing more than liberal propaganda printed on a fish wrapper. Jimro
  20. When I finished my first 8 years in the Army I had a break in service while I finished up my BS. I grew a beard. My wife went to her parents for a weekend and I shaved. I was doing the dishes when she came home and walked up behind me. I twirled around really fast and said, "different isn't it?" She started crying. I felt bad. Jimro
  21. If you can close the bolt on an empty chamber you probably don't have a problem with the extractor claw hitting the chamber. If you do have a problem, the better option is cut a relief for the extractor in the barrel. Z1R posted directions on how to do that a while back, but it boils down to marking the area you need to cut, removing the barrel, making the cut, and reinstalling the barrel. Jimro
  22. It happened before, and history has a way of repeating itself, especially in Europe. Europe usually ends up as a Russian hegemony or a German hegemony if America doesn't step up to the plate for the little guys. Although I don't know how that will play out with the current political sentiment in Germany. Ever since the Third Reich rampage across Europe the Germans have been very sensitive about military action. Jimro
  23. On average the most dangerous thing a soldier will do in a year is go on a 4 day weekend. However there were a whole lot of UN peacekeeping deployments in the Clinton years which had a lot of accidental deaths. The numbers do look differently when you consider the 30,000 plus who have received permanent injury under W. Jimro
  24. Tony, if we were in a position to affect the outcome of the spat in Georgia the spat in Georgia wouldn't have happened. Georgia was stupid to anger the Bear when it couldn't call upon the support of the West. I truly wish it weren't so, but it is what it is. Jimro
  25. Georgia angered the bear by requesting membership in NATO when NATO couldn't protect it from the bear. Jimro
