    Turk Reworked Gew98

Hmm...if 3 threads bear 75% of the load then the remaining 2 threads would only have to bear 12.5% each...not an unreasonable amount. If we assume that the 3 main loadbearing threads evenly distribute the 75% then 25% is the maximum load for any thread, then 12.5% on the remaining two (or even 25% on one) is still within the margin of safety for 5 threads. 100% over 5 threads means that you still have strength left over. If each thread is capable of 25% of the load and you have five threads then you should be capable of 125% of capacity, a pretty significant safety margin. However if you had 7.5 threads then the safety margin would be 187.5%, 62.5% greater than the modified turk with 5 threads. This is assuming that the torque load on the threads has a significant impact on "safety". I think that when this baby gets rebarreled she'll end up with a rather sedate round such as the 6.5x55 or 7x57. Maybe even a 9x57... Either way I am happy with the purchase, now I just need to check the headspace since I'm pretty sure the bolt is a mismatch. Jimro
  2. So there I was looking for an AR lower and I see a Turk mauser just begging to come home with me... and so I now have an ATF 1954 marked turk with a fairly nice bore and silky smooth action. Now the internet says that these rifles "may not be safe" to shoot since the receiver ring lip cut removes 1 to 1 1/2 threads. Now the threads are 12 per inch, and the shank should be 0.625 inches in length. 12x0.625 = 7.5 threads. 7.5-1.5= 6 threads remaining. I think that 6 threads is plenty. Am I way off base in thinking that this rifle is just fine to shoot even with full power 8x57 loads? And to open a can of worms, what is the "most powerful" cartridge that this action could be chambered for? Jimro
  3. Polish the chamber with some fine grit wet sandpaper and progressively work finer and see if that fixes the problem. A dowel with a vertical cut through it makes a handy tool to hold the sandpaper, and an electric drill will spin it just fine It's what I would do. Jimro

    Hat's

It's funny, my wife has been temping at a Hat company for the last few months... I didn't start wearing hats until I joined the Army, and I dislike the beenie because it doesn't have a bill. I guess it looks cool or something.... My favorite hats are both "Stitch" hats from Disneyworld, the little blue alien experiment from "Lilo and Stitch". The rest of my hats are all "gimme" hats, most of them military oriented. Jimro
  5. a quick check is to lubricate the camming surface on the rear of the bolt body, if it fixes your problem then it's "galling". Jimro
  6. It's good to here from you first hand emmy. Stop by every once in a while cause this place sometimes needs a womans touch Jimro
  7. Risking money in the stock market for short term gain is a difficult task to master. Much easier to buy and hold on to stocks for long term growth. Jimro
  8. Bannerman was a guy who bought surplus firearm parts and made "frankensporters" out of them. Think Mauser with 1917 Enfield barrel fitted to attach a dutch bayonet. Did crazy things cobbling together firearms from cheap parts. Jimro
  9. Instead of starting Ranger school on the 6th I will hopefully be fully functional and healthy for the class starting on May 26th. I pulled an intercostal muscle on my right side, and cannot do pushups or chinups without blinding pain. I am confident that I will be all healed up in time. After all the physical events in the first four days of Ranger school you really don't need too much upper body strength, but those first four days are really important. Thank you for your prayers. Pre-Ranger is run by Ranger Instructors certified by 4th Ranger Training Brigade, and the events and periods of instruction cover everything in Ranger Assessment Phase and Darby Phase (which make up Benning phase). I don't want to get overconfident, but I am much more confident now than before. Pray I heal quickly. I need to knock out Ranger school before I can finish up the rest of my "professional development" and take charge of a platoon. Jimro
  10. For those of you who haven't yet prepared for a Zombie outbreak, I recommend "The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead" http://www.amazon.com/Zombie-Survival-Guid...5459&sr=8-2 I find it an indispensable planning guide. Jimro
  11. First time I ever got drunk was on homemade red wine, concord grapes I think. Couldn't tell, it tasted like a really rough burgundy and for years afterward the smell of red wine made me gag... We were young and dumb, I was 14, mixed it with "gatorade" to make it go down. Jimro
  12. Prayers sent, I really hope that God blesses you and yours with peace and prosperity. Jimro

Funny how when this happens in Germany they don't make such a big deal about it. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/1952869.stm http://www.spiegel.de/international/0,1518,449492,00.html Of course Germany is very progressive, and therefore any failings of it's system should be ignored. Jimro
  14. On friday I report for Pre Ranger, which is two weeks in the field patrolling. Then I get a one day break and then report to Ranger school. Prayers are greatly appreciated. I know that God never puts anything on my plate that he can't handle. If all goes well in ten weeks I'll be posting again. If things don't go well it'll be sooner than that, or later than that. Jimro

While I went to community college from 16 to 18, then I was in the army until I was 22. Didn't step foot onto a four year institution until after I'd earned the GI Bill. There are a lot of other "older" college students who took different routes to earning their bachelors degree. We were the minority, but a very present minority. But I fully agree employees should have the right to carry, it could have saved Rebecca Griego's life http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/310031_uwshooting03.html Jimro

If 1 student or employee in 100 choose to carry concealed, that would have been at least 250 armed citizens on the VATech campus. That's better odds than 0 in 100. Jimro
  17. Believe it or not the "anniversary wine" my wife and I enjoy was 4.95 at the class six.... But it's not Gallo.... I dunno, but there is just something shady about wine sold in gallon jugs... Jimro
  18. Drinking E&J Gallo is it's own punishment. Jimro
  19. There is also a huge difference in the number of care providers for animal verses human surgery. Most small vet clinics have all the equipment they need on sight for diagnosis and even surgery. Xray, operating suite, even a pharmacy. Most doctors offices will have some medications on hand, usually samples given out by drug reps, but they lack the complete package that makes single visit treatment possible. This is why patients have to go to a hospital for a treatment, then go all over the place, lab, xray, etc, in order to get treatment. Jimro
  20. The problem with antibiotics is their misuse, patients need to follow the prescription all the way to the end instead of stopping when the symptoms go away. I'm not surprised about gonorrhea is now resistant, pretty much the only STD that hasn't shown adaptation to antibiotics is syphilis, which can still be treated by plain old penicillin. The problem with relying on research to create new drugs is that it's like any other investment, uncertain return. The good news is that there are still alternate medications available for treatment. 21. True, but the hunting is good and the growth management act (passed by Seattle, after all, the liberals know best) has kept a lot of the rural areas economically depressed, like Pe Ell, Raymond, heck pretty much anything in Lewis and Pacific counties. Simple economics means that retirement income going into an area helps out at least three other people/businesses. And I don't worry about the rain, as a native washingtonian I have webbed feet and a genetic dislike for California democrats... Jimro
  22. Don't know if you've already seen a nutritionist about your diet, cancer treatment can really take a toll on the body. Make sure you have a well balanced diet isn't a guarantee, but it will help increase your chances. Fresh fruits, vegetables, lean meats, whole grains. Best of luck, and you will be in my prayers. Jimro
  23. hmmm... good thing my preferences are Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Texas. Jimro

Check the bore, the crown, and how difficult or easy it is to work the action. If all of those areas are good then you probably have a nice shooter. There are exceptions to every rule, but that is how I buy my Mosins. All of the Mosins I've handled, and bought, at Big5 have been decent if not pristine examples. Good luck. Jimro
  25. A liberal is someone who will give away everything he doesn't own. Can't remember who said that. Jimro
