  1. Thanks to a mention by Tombstone in another thread I went to the SOG site and saw they are selling the British Martini Henry rifles. Over the years I've seen very few at gun shows that have been sporterzied. I know collectors probably wince at the idea of cutting one but I think the single-shot action made for a rimmed cartridge opens up some real possibiltys. I assume they could be made into something utilizing a low pressure classic cartridge or something along the lines of 44 mag or 45 Colt. I've got to many in the works to take on another project but just curious, has anybody ever sporterized Martini?? I know I'm way out in left field to even consider it!! I keep thinking the new 50 cal. Smith & Wesson would be kind of cool in a single shot. I don't know for certain and just speculating that the 303 Martinis were made for Cordite and not black powder. I'm really trying to dig into my memory but I think the sporterized Martinis I saw were chambered into something along the lines of 22 Hornet or 219 Zipper. Does anybody have any idea of a Martini's pressure limits??

    Got a Penny?

Not a bad idea but a much easier way. Use a matchbook cover or fold a business card. The decapping pin goes right through the paper.
  3. $700.00 for the two is close to a steal!! The diamond grips on the Model 28 should add apx $100 to the value. You might consider running the model #'s numbers on the S&W group to find out the apx date they were made. I've been searching for the 4" S&W 41 mag without the adjustable sights for several years. 6" S&W 38's are somewhat scarce, not rare, so keep looking. www.jgsales was selling and hopefully still lowballing surplus Europe police S&W 38's, don't recall if they had a 6" but it might be worth checking out their site. I picked up two of the odball pin barrel 3" barrels. I'll look and see if I still have the pic in my file and post it. These are my S&W 38's The two on the left are the 3" barrel model 10's I got at J&G. They both have replacement wood grips I scrounged as the rubber grips that came with them were pretty chezzy. The third one I got in the late 80's and it remains unfired. The fourth a model 15 is surplus from the Navajo police dept. I have another 4" model 10 I loaned my son a few years ago.
  4. Sounds like a good idea but keep in mind anti-freeze is poisen and especially hazordous to dogs that for some strange reason are attracted to it.
  5. Thx for the advice, I've been on the stomach meds and the liquid pink manure as I call it sits on my nightstand. My problem is I can't get a Dr to write an Rx for any of the anti-inflamotory meds because of the fear of possible liability. I'm trying via a medical school to get into a clinical trial of a new and hopefully wonder drug.
  6. Right now I woud give my right nut for the ability to use NSAID's again. The alternatives have not been pleasant. The previous poster that stated NSAID's wont ruin your digestive system, I say respectfully you're wrong. At least from the standpoint of Celebrex, I didn't take Viox long enough to make a judgement. In the previous poster's and Celebrex's defence, had I followed directions, by not exceeding the recomended dose and taking with food I might not be writing this. One thing you haven't seen in the news in regards to NSAID's is the problems with gastric reguritation while sleeping. It damm near killed me but I would be willing to take the risk all over again.
  7. I had the oppurtunity about 20 years ago to particiapte in an auto loading rifle running hog target shoot. It was a real challenge just to get 2 or 3 shots off even more to hit the target. The AR-15's ruled the high power match with the light recoil and the ability to stay on target.
  8. Monte from your desciption it sounds like a thread file I used to sell to auto mechanics about 30 years ago. It was the cat's meow for cleaning a cross thread on a wheel's lug stud but for a small area only. The files I sold I don't think were hard enough to do any serious metal checkering. What you got may be different being that it came from a hardware rather than an automotive source. The thread file I sold all manufactured the same place but came in different packages and brand names such as Ken-Tool, KD Tool, Cal Van and OTC were straight. Snap-On, Mac and Bonney had one that was of much higher quality and was angled slightly on the ends. Possibly the high priced files are harder and sharper and might work.
  9. Don't be angry with yourself, I can assure you years from now you will reflect on it as a learning experience and likely laugh about it. I don't know what you have invested in it but you can recoup a portion of it selling it as individual parts on Ebay. I can share an experience I had when I was in my early 20's rebuilding automatic tramsmissions. I rebuilt two ford C-4's what I thought was perfect, sparing no expense or labor. Neither worked because I failed to pay attention to the band setting in the manuals. It never occured to me to look and see if the settings were in inch or foot pounds. I spent months responding to the moniker Heavy Duty. My third attempt went into an RV, I thought the owner was going to kiss me when I told him with all the confidence I earned the hard way, his tranny will be good for at least a hundred thousand miles.
  10. First and foremost don’t be embarrassed, one of the advantages of posting on the net is the anonymity it offers. Don’t let this one discourage you from future projects. I botched my first one years ago twisting and destroying the receiver because of a know-it-all attitude and not having the proper tools. When I did my first there was no internet, I spent some time in a public library and finally with the aid of a friend got it out but the receiver was useless. My second project I got it out without much difficulty but had to go through a lesson from the school of hard knox on installation and headspace. Once you succesfully complete your first project the satisfaction will make it worthwhile. If you post here looking for advice and recommendations on some good books I’m sure somebody can point you in the right direction. Here is a link on using an easy-out, unfortunately not for use in a barrel but for a broken bolt. It might answer your question about what is an easy out. There are some plumbing sized easy outs for the old cast iron threaded pipes that might fit, whether it will work or not I can’t say. http://www.brokentap.com/easy-outs.html
  11. In Arizona several years ago most county sheriffs and police cheifs were refusing to sign class three applications. Robert Corbin a former NRA officer and at the time the Arizona Attorney General signed the applications, claiming he was the cheif LEO for the entire state. ATF never challenged it.
  12. I have no problem with those that come seeking a better life via hard work. My problem is with those that come in search of a handout or a larger more profitable arena for a criminal enterprise. Unfortunately the numbers continue to grow of those that demand government bennys, refuse to learn english and cry racist. Worse, those that adopt multiple names and draw bennys, bleed the workers comp system 2-3 times over while working under another name and sub lease their free or subsided housing while sleeping in another paid for by the government. It is not that unusual when a non-english speaking Mexican buys a $50-60,000 Explorer, Suburban or new pick-up truck with cash. A far cry from the Mexican immigrant either legal or illegal that united under Caesar Chavez to improve wages and working conditions. Members of the United Farm Workers came here to work, earn an honest living, lived the horrors and suffered the same discrimination as the Italian, Irish or Oriental immigrants did 50-100 years prior. Could possibly be an urban legend but Chavez and his followers, the majority being Mexican but also included Central and South Americans, earned my respect and I had a total paradigm shift when I heard Chavez snubbed Jesse Jackson on national tv. Chavez when asked off camera why he gave Jackson the cold shoulder when the two were interviewed together on a network broadcast at a Democratic presidential convention. Chavez supposedly said something to the effect, no city welfare my people work in the fields.
  13. Not exactly!! How many Italians immigrated for welfare benefits in the 20's??
  14. This is a new one on me, never heard of the 8X60, is it a true wildcat or possibly a pre-WW2 standard chambering?? http://cgi.ebay.com/WILD-CAT-RCBS-FL-DIE-S...1QQcmdZViewItem
  15. It is really a no-brainer, if you really want a 765 go for it, it will be worth every extra dime you spend on it. "Because I want one" makes it the most logical choice. Don't over look the .312 Hornady round nose slug that weighs apx 170-175 grs, its the most accurate I've ever shot out of a 765 Argie, 7.7 Jap and 303 Brit. May be different though with a sporting barrel with a different twist rate than the mil-surps.
  16. If you're considering spending that kind of money check with Mcgowen. You can buy a barrel with 765 bore as a blank or spend more for contouring, short chambered etc. If your serious let me know and I'll go through my junk pile and find his catalog and get the prices. 300 seems high to me unless they are installing, chambering, test fire etc. As far as stupid deer, I only see them off season. Saw a roadkill buck this past weekend on the way to a paintball tournament. Ironic that he layed within a few feet of a "Watch for Elk" highway sign.
  17. I've had some good luck buying used lawnmowers, edgers and other lawn tools at flea markets. Avoid the seller that has a bunch he has fixed up. Look for somebody having a moving sale. Don't know about your part of the country but I see used mowers going for 25-60 bux. Don't listen to their BS about how good it runs, if they wont let you start it up look elsewhere. I've got a 30 year old Sensation mower with none of the safety bells and whistles and I wouldn't trade it for one of the brand new doofus proof and EPA approved they now sell. I crank mine up to very high rpm's, polute the air and roll through high grass like a tank.
  18. I haven't read Waters' article but Norma's published velocity can be misleading. Norma derives their numbers using test barrels of equal length to the original military barrel. Norma's 7.65 Argie figures were likely derived from a 29 inch test barrel, it's published velocity best I recall was right on the heels of US 7.62 and commercial 308 Winchester whose velocitys were tested from a much shorter barrel.

Somebody probably asked Mr Roberts the same question!! There is a newsgroup dedicated to wildcatting. If you can find it you might find somebody that has tried it. Wish I could give you a link I haven't been there in over a year. Good luck and please keep this group informed of the progress.
  20. BobVZ you might have a collector's piece!! Many of the re-lined barrels were done for the Franco govt by the Nazis. Remove the action from the wood and look on the bottom side of the action for a very tiny Nazi stamping. Unless you have excellent eyesight you will likely need a magnifying glass. I've previoiusly had two, one was spray painted presumably in the refurb operation and the tiny eagle and swastika mark was hard to find. Nazi collectors are a strange bunch and tend to trade down when horse trading non WW2 goods for anything with a swastika on it. About 25 years ago I managed to trade one for an M-1 Carbine with a damaged stock. When I first discovered nazi stamp I took it to a meeting of the Arizona Gun Collectors. They were having a stump the experts night. I didn't fool anybody as two Mauser collectors were aware of the process and nazi stamp. The following month's meeting one of the collectors showed it to me in a book. Sorry but I don't recall the name of the book.
  21. I cheated and did it twice, do I get two beers instead of one??
  22. Emul8, next time you're in Prescott go visit whiskey row. Many of those bars are often used in western movies and look basically the same as they did a hundred years ago. The original Billy Jack was filmed almost entirely in Prescott. The fight scene was filmed in the park across the street from Whiskey Row. I haven't been to Cottonwood in about 25 years. I used to go to Cottonwood's dump early in the morning for easy short range varmit hunting.
  23. Z as long as I can remember work has always been little hard to find in Prescott. To many Phoenicians want to escape the heat and large city hussle for the favorable climate and the small town lifestyle in Prescott and the surrounding areas. You can expect alot of competition on the job market. Favorably speaking Prescott like the enitre state is growing like crazy so chances are good one might land a job with a new business BUT, overall Arizona's wages rank pretty low when compared to other parts of the country especially manufacturing. Construction workers I've known used to complain of the work not being steady there but I'm speculating that has changed and likely improved since the growth boom here the past few years. Speaking for what I know in the Phx area, manufacturing job wages are low because of the influx of legal green card carrying Mexicans willing to work for peanuts. If it is a gun related business you're seeking employment Prescott is probably the best part of the state. However I do recall seeing a big sign at a gun shop a month or two ago looking for a gunsmith in the Glendale area. In the casual conversation something was said of trouble finding as real gunsmith not a parts replacer. Of all the places you went to bad you missed J&G in Prescott, maybe good though, I can't go in and out of there without spending to much money. Davidson's warehouse is also located in the area. I got a warehouse tour apx 1990 when I was in the uniform business and held a FFL. I watched them unload Browning Bars off a tractor-trailer by the pallet loads and sure enough I walked out of there with one. Anyhow good luck if I can be of any assistance let me know.
