  1. I liked the canned Schlitz but their smooth draft was a different beer in itself. As a teeneger there was a beer called Eastside Old Tap, a case of 24 12oz bottles was only $2.40 if you had the returnable bottles, occasionally on sale for only $1.99. It was bad but I remember a few times having to walk home from the drive-in movie getting fall down stupid drunk for only $2.40.
  2. Guess I'm showing my age and haven't had it in years, Schlitz Draft. There is also another from a local brewer just outside Phoenix, the name escapes me but it is a chile flavored beer, comes with a green chile in every bottle.
  3. In a way it is good that they don't give the refugees the military clothing. The looters if they had access might dress the part and pose as National Guardsman. When my uniform business folded I had to GIVE away postal items over the possible secuity risk of a non-employee using them to gain easy entry to secure areas. The only postal items I could sell to the general public were shoes, sox and belts, the rest either went free to USPS employees or a former competitor.
  4. I have to partially disagree. I use the surplus 7.65 Argie and break it down and use the components. I don't know what is on the market today but the stuff I got several years ago have nice .312 copper jacket lead core slugs weighing apx 174grs. I dump the powder directly into 303 Brit, 7.7 Jap and the 7.65 Argie brass and discard the berdan corrosive primed brass. I can't say it enough and please take my word for it, don't fireform brass without using good shooting glasses.
  5. Tombstone Arizona, what a joke!! I have relatives visiting from back east wanting to see Az, so we jumped in my girlfriend’s SUV and hit the road. We drove down to Tombstone and I couldn’t believe what has happened to what used to be a real ghost town. It is nothing but a tourist trap now, the building restorations look like 1st class horse shoot and the residents are a bunch of greedy wanabe hippies. Guess I’m showing my age. I remember visiting Tombstone in 50's and 60's as a kid, when it still was a real ghostown. The very few residents were all hard core cowboys. No, not a lot of real cow poking cowboys but mostly retired or disabled miners and prospectors. They still rode horses and mules, wore guns and wound up living in Tombstone because property even by 1950-60's standards was dirt cheap. Back then there were a few trinket shops, the Tombstone Epitaph would print up custom headline on it’s original 1880's press, an old fashion photo studio and a couple of antique shops. One old crippled up prospector I remember had a mule trained to do some tricks and he had a basket out looking for donations. Today many of the average shop owners are an aged, liberal 1960's hippie. What irritated me more than anything were the numerous shops with “no firearms” signs, one in particular “PEACE no guns, absolutely no exceptions”. The shop in typical 1960's hippie style smelled of incense and from a distance looked like they might have had some bongs on display. Not much more than one gift shop after another and the Birdcage Theater wanted to charge a $6.00 admission fee. I didn’t bother to stop at the OK Corral, nothing but a gift shop. Boot Hill also has to be entered through another gift shop so I didn’t even bother to stop. I remember they used to ask for donations, can’t say for certain but my guess is they likely charge admission. Found it hard to believe there was a gun shop there but it took me about 60 seconds to realize the prices were beyond ridicules, aimed at wealthy tourists. Sorry for the rant, while I’m sitting at my keyboard waiting for my sleeping pill to work I’m fuming forking mad at what has happened to a place in history. I’ll never forget the first time I saw Tombstone when I was about 10 or 11 years old and just being thrilled, seeing real cowboys, abandoned buildings and the remnants of a once thriving western town. Today I put Tombstone in the same class as a pet rock, totally forking useless.
  6. I've had some (good & bad) luck breaking Locktite's hold with PB Blaster.
  7. Don't recall his name but one of the Minutemen founders here in southeren Arizona has announced his candidacy for the state senate. Certainly hope he is elected. Our lezbo governer vetos most of the anti criminal immigrant legislation and there is not enough votes to overide. Barry Goldwater's nephew has announced his running for governer and is campaigning on the criminal immigration issue, hope he wins. I'm in the process of negotiations with the City of Phoenix on a residential rental property. The city will subsidise the rent for a low income family. So far the city hasn't sent an english speaking family to inspect the house with the exception of a call for a New Orleans refugee family. I was able to decline the refugees because the offer was only for a 90 day lease. When I was contacted about the refugees I asked about their occupations I was told the parents were disabled. To me that means they were likely professional welfare recipients. When I signed up with the city's program it is supposed to be for a one year lease. It has been frustrating trying to rent in a mostly hispanic neighborhood. Prospective renters with money appear to be drug dealers, hookers or what we call coyotes. Coyotes are the people smugglers from Mexico and it is not rare to see them busted with 30-50 people in one house. The city's program is supposed to be for the working poor but from what I'm seeing it is for subsidising illegal immigrants.
  8. Don''t know about a barrel. I've always (back in my married days) would leave with five to go shooting or horse trading at a gun show and return with six. X-wife # 2 was a cop and it was a little more difficult, she knew the difference between a Mauser and Winchester, to #1 all guns looked alike.
  9. So many of the evacuees have depended on the government to feed, clothe and put a roof over their head for their entire life they just assumed the government would be there with deeper pockets. Why take a free bus ride to safety knowing they could stick around and treat themselves to a shopping spree. The only lesson many have learned is the vulnerability of the government and blame Bush for everything. Look at those that still refuse to leave, they assume the governemnt will continue to drop food and water. Sorry for the rant a gunshow this coming weekend was moved out of an air conditioned building to house the evacuees. I get really ticked off seeing them on the news complaining about Bush and the handouts. They got a free plane ride to Phoenix, new clothes, a cot with blankets and pillows and free food prepared in the sport arena's kitchens. Dr's and nurses set up a free clinic in the arena and clebritys were there to greet them. They are already hitting the streets with poor me I'm from New Orleans signs and people are stopping in traffic handing them money. The news showed only one person hitting the street on foot looking for work as an auto mechanic. Many are demanding their welfare check due on the 1st of the month.
  10. During the breif period I had an FFL I ordered two. I can't recall the distributer but everything was on the up and up. They were fully described as being altered and the rubber buttplate was a repo item. Best I recall they were priced close to, two hundred and arrived in near mint condition. I can't recall if $200 was my cost or the sale price including freight I charged. If in good shape well worth a C-note. Incidently if you're a hard core collector, be prepared to pay a bunch for an original bayonet and sheath.
  11. Good list but I would add a water filter to it. One has to be awful careful using bleach to disinfect drinking water. The bleach kills the good intestinal tract bacteria and more often than not causes diarea and stomach cramps. In order for a safe level of chlorine to disinfect the water it has to sit for hours or days. If nobody in your family is allergic to iodine and the many commercial products available I suggest an alternative disinfectant for your drinking water. Peroxide can also be used in an emergency, kills bacteria as good as bleach but not as effective against mold. If one has to flee, water with it’s weight and space is cumbersome to carry. Provided you can get gasoline to drive away you’re ok, carrying 3 days worth of water on your back with other supplies may not be possible. Bleach is still must to have on hand for bathing water, cleaning clothing and eating utensils. To save storage space you can store swimming pool chlorine, considerably stronger than bleach. I was the laughing stock of my family during the Y2K scare. I hoarded food, water, medicine, fuel etc. bought a generator. I found a lot of information on compiling a survival list from a Mormon friend. I’m not a Mormon but to give credit where credit is due, they have been preparing for long term survival for over 100 years. You wont see it on the news but Mormons are often targeted by neighbors after a disaster for their supplies. I don’t know if it still out there but found a lot of good info on LDS websites prior to Y2K.
  12. When re-finishing and Tru-Oil come up I've always knocked it as no good in the long term but others in this ng swear by it. This is another example of Tru-Oil failing for me. I started using Tru-Oil apx 20-25 years ago re-finishing several long guns and all my wood handgun grips. On the handguns, although it took a few years the finish dulled then later powdered off. It could be attributed to my hand persperation be acidic. The long guns for the most part did what is shown in the picture below but this is the worse I've seen. I had a significant event occur about the same time I finished this stock and I can recall the date being Sept 1988. This gun has been virtually untouched, buried in the back of my vault for years. This is the first time I've used this shotgun in at least 10 years. The stock is a replacement I purchased unfinished in 1988 from SARCO. I didn't notice the problem untill this morning when I took it as a back-up on a dove hunt this morning. The finish had bubbled and looked similiar to a window tint job gone bad. When I rubbed my thumb on the bubbles the finish just peeled off. I can't recall how many coats of Tru-Oil I applied but suspect 2 or 3, steel wooling down between coats. These bubbles peeled all the way down to the wood. With so many swearing by Tru-Oil I suspect I must doing something wrong. I would suspect oil on the wood under the finish but taking so many years to bubble up, I can only assume if it was oil it would have bubbled up sooner. I would appreciate you sharing your opinion, don't worry about being polite, if you think I'm some how totally screwing up please let me know. All the guns I've re-finished using spray or hand-run polyurethane seem to be holding up just fine.
  13. You might try J&G, I recently got one dated 1941. Call during the week when they are not busy and you night get somebody willing to look for your date.
  14. My X father-in-law had a K98 Mauser he bought back from WW2. He had it converted by a friend to 8MM/06 and it WAS NOT stamped. I imagine there are alot of others in the same condition.
  15. I saw a Mauser sporter in a pawn shop about a year ago. It was caliber stamped on the left and the right said something like "To My Son (initials) Xmas 1979". The personalised writing looked to have been etched rather than stamped. Kind of unique but depressing to see it in a pawnshop.

    375 Whelen AI

Speaking second hand, a freind had some problems with his full length resizing die for his 375 Whelen. I'm assuming it was the Ackley Improved version because Ackley did the re-barrel for him in the early 70's. I do recall RCBS having him send three emptys fired from his rifle and they sent him another sizing die and an extra expander ball and stem no charge. The extra expanding ball I'm guessing was 35 caliber. RCBS recomended the extra step when expanding a 30/06 neck to 375. To the best of my knowledge there wasn't any factory 35 Whelen brass to work with in the 70's. Been alot of years, don't remember how much but I do vividly recall him pissing and moaning about the initial cost of the die set from RCBS's custom shop. I imagine the reloading situation is better today, reloading dies are probably available at a reasonable cost and with the parent case 35 Whelen brass readily available, expanding the neck to 375 without splitting necks is simply done. Some good suggestions so far as a possible alternative, my only suggestion is checking on the availabilty of ammo, reloading componenets and tools. The only 375 Whelen headspace problems I ever heard of (heard, never experienced) was on the initial fireforming. Once the brass has been formed to your chamber you shouldn't have any headspace problems.
  17. Z you are absolutley amazing, thx for the advice!! BEFORE AFTER
  18. I chose the Redneck moniker for two reasons. When I first started surfing the net I spent alot of time in political newsgroups. The bleeding heart, winer, crybaby liberals more often than not when challenged for facts would resort to name calling. For some strange reason replying to thank you when being called a redneck used to really irritate them. I am viewed by some of my wealthy yuppy relatives as a redneck. One limosine liberal realtive in paticular used to talk down to me, calling me red for short. Never been to my house, assumed I lived in a trailer park and used to make remarks about me living in Redneck Manor. A good example, at a family gathering I was bragging about a hunting-camping trip and his wife got elbowed by another realtive for saying "ohhh how barrrbarrric why didn't you rent a Winnabego" when I told them of trying to set up a tent in a rainstorm and sleeping in the cab of my pickup. "Ohhh how cruel is that how rednecks hunt" when I described varmit calling. Their attitude changed when they needed somebody to drag their daughter out of a biker bar. They sent me a check for $500 with an apolegetic letter vowing to never call me a redneck again. I returned the check with a note saying I take being called a redneck as a compliment.
  19. ATT CLARK, do you know which Macfarland book it is?? If I remember right he had about 4 or 5 editions. Thx in advance
  20. THX, I looked at Brownells site, the tool will cost me about 70 bux A gunsmith over the phone quoted me about $50 to install one, maybe more or less when he sees it. I'll try it on a cheapie stock this time. The last one I half-assed by eye-balling it without a jig was on a nice piece of finished and checkered wood.
  21. Dr Scott, where can you order a stock with cross bolts? Thx in advance.
  22. Any tips, tricks or suggestions on installing a recoil lug cross bolt. I did one, more precisely screwed one up about 20 years ago and got it off center and wound up with about 1/4 inch layer of glass between the lug and cross bolt.
  23. Most likley from Spain or one of several South American countiries that adopted it.
  24. Karl it sounds the same as most my 8MM's shooting surplus Turk ammo. If you haven't done so already try some mild mannered reloads with heavy slugs and see if that doesn't help with the group size.
  25. Long story short I have recently acquired two sportorized 1917 Enfields. After my last completed project and spending way to much I planned on doing the rest on the economy plan. With what I currently have in my vault I can certainly hunt anything in Arizona and pretty well anywhere in North America and not be under gunned with the exception of maybe dangerous game. Like many of you, you build them even though you don’t need it but simply said you just want it. I’ve decided to be generous building one of the Enfields, nice stock, leaf rear sights, high polish blue, jeweled bolt etc and the other will be a cheapie.. The cheapie will be more of a utility grade. I’ll spend enough to make it reliable and reasonably accurate for hunting purposes. I don’t want to have to worry about a stock ding or a scratch but would want to be able to get one in the kill zone without much difficulty out to about 250 yds. Not really having the need for a cannon but a desire to have bragging/showing off rights on something unique I can’t decide what calibers. Being an Enfield I would like something that will utilize the long action, something I can’t stuff in a standard length Mauser. First caliber that comes to mind is 375 H&H a good all-around choice where I wouldn’t be ridiculously over gunned deer sized and up. If I’m going to spend the bucks though to make one unique, desirable and taking advantage of the long action. I’m considering anything based on the 460 Weatherby 30/378 or the granddaddy itself, if possible maybe a Lazoroni caliber of some sort or one of the new RUM’s. Having something like a 416 Rigby would be kind of cool although the chances of my ever hunting dangerous game or even stepping foot on the African continent are somewhere between slim and none. On the other hand I have a yearning to build a 1950's type classic and if I follow that theme a 300 H&H would be in order... but ..... so would the Rigby. I’ve pretty well decided one will be in 375 H&H but can’t decide if I will chamber it in the cheapie or the showing off project. I have plenty of time to decide, I currently have two Mauser projects in the works I’m determined to finish before I start another. I’ve recovered fairly well from my surgery and am back to fitting a stock on one of the projects without feeling any pain. So what do you guys think, which calibers would you choose and if you don’t mind taking a few minutes at the keyboard, why?? Any other creative or classic suggestions on what to do with the P-17's will be sincerely appreciated.
