  1. Robert, I am really sorry to hear of your brothers passing. My brothers and sisters and I are not that close anymore but I know if one of them passed away I would feel as if part of me was gone. I will pray for you and your family as well. Mike
  2. Jerry is correct. Some ranchers offer what they call dayhunting where you pay a set amount to hunt by the day. Some lease by the season (deer season)(dove season) (turkey season) etc. But typically when you hear a guy down in Texas talking about his lease, he is talking about a year round lease. By far the best option. As Jerry stated not only can you hunt nearly year round down here but a year round lease becomes more than a hunting lease, it becomes a get away, a camping site, a place to get together with your hunting buddies even when there is no season in progress. Not to mention the fact that you have the chance to build stands and plant food plots and such. Also you are hunting with people that you know and trust and you know who’s hunting and where they are at. This is a distinct advantage over dayhunting or hunting on public land. There are three of us on my lease down near San Antonio. Me, my hunting buddy, and his wife. We pay $1000.00 per year each. I’ve never been on a guided hunt but I’ll bet that $1000.00 won’t get you very far with an outfitter, or on a game ranch. We have had this lease for three years now and have it sewed up for the next year as well. We have a couple of small campers down there as well as a cook shack that we have built, numerous tree stands and a small building where we process our own deer. We are very fortunate and we realize it. A good deer lease worth the money is getting really hard to find and hunting partners that you know and trust are worth their weight in gold. I relish the time that my wife and I get to spend there. If I look over the horizon I can see a day coming, a day when working guys like me and Jerry can no longer afford a hunting lease. But not today. Today I am already getting ready for next deer season !! Later, Mike
  3. Hey Fritz. Yeap the reamer co-op is alive and well and I am still the coordinator. When you need a reamer just let me know. No high fences or controlled hunts for me. I'll hang'em up before I start shooting fish in a barrel. No offense to people who enjoy this type hunt or do not have any other place to hunt. Its just not my cup off tea. The area that our lease is in is abundant in free roaming Axis deer as well as a few Blackbuck antelope and Mouflon sheep. I guess these animals have escaped from the the high fence ranches down thru the years and multiplied. If one passes thru our lease he is fair game and doesn't even require a tag. Its a nice little bonus if you have a lease down in that part of Texas. My wife and I both enjoy venison and the Axis meat is the very best venison there is. We had to buy another deep freeze to put all the meat in this year. We'll eat every scrap of it before next deer season starts. Fare thee well, Mike
  4. Well I had a very nice deer season this year. I hunt here close to my house up on the Red River and have a lease down west of San Antonio. I harvested 3 nice whitetails (spike and 2 does) 1 rio grande turkey, and two Axis bucks (one Axis buck I would guess at well over 200 lbs). Weather was too warm during bow season, but we had great weather for rifle season. My sporterized Mausers performed flawlessly. Two of the whitetails and one axis were taken with a Turkish action sporting a new M94 swede barrel. The big axis buck was taken (200 yards) with a Turk action sporting a 6mm Rem take off barrel that Sonic1 rethreaded for me, and one whitetail and a turkey with a Turk action with an A&B 257 roberts barrel. Its a nice feeling to hunt with rifles that you have built and ammo that you have worked up for that rifle. Sonic1 and I also built up a rifle for the 10 year old son of my hunting buddy and danged if the little fart didn't kill 5 deer with that thing and one was a nice 10 point that was at a dead run. You couldn't pry that rifle loose from him with a crowbar. Later, Mike
  5. Yeah Dave I also need to add a 300 Win Mag Improved reamer from TInker. Thanks, Mike
  6. Thanks Ken. I guess if I looked around a little bit every now and then I would see the stuff at the bottom of the page. Thanks again, Mike
  7. See the post below for information on the Reamer Sharing Co-op. We have 21 members as of right now and new members are always welcome. Later, Mike Case chasmike@yahoo.com
  8. Jerry, I'm glad you're finally getting to go hunting. I know that you have been chomping at the bit. I hope you have a good time and get a bigun. I've been down to the lease several times since season started, but I haven't done much good until this last weekend. I still haven't shot a whitetail but I shot two nice Axis deer this last weekend. One of them was so big that me and the land owner could hardly get it loaded in the truck. It sure is nice to hunt near one of those high fence ranches that has a few holes in the fence. My hunting buddy shot a really nice trophy Mouflon ram opening weekend. I think about you every time I go thru London. I've been going thru London at night the last couple trips down to the lease and man you gotta pay attention or you'll be wearing a deer in your grill. There were two nice whitetails ran over right there in downtown London last time I came thru. Anyway, have a good time on your hunt and good luck. Man I'm gettin about as long winded as you are. Mike
  9. Well I used to have to go 5 miles or so down the road down on the Red River to go wild hog hunting, but they have found my place now and are coming by every few days and avenging the deaths of their family members. I spotted 6 or seven here the other nite so I put out a trap in my yard. I've caught 1 so far. If that doesn't work I guess I will have to start blasting. The moral of the story I guess is, if you hunt hogs, don't do it close to home. They will hunt you down if they can!
  10. Yeap Tony it is a Mouflon sheep. They stock them on these high fence exotic hunting ranches (I use the word hunting very loosely here), and they escape on occasion. Our deer lease is in Southwest Texas and the guy next door has one of these high fence game ranches. I must say it is really cool to be setting in your deer stand in South Texas and hear the Elk bugling in the distance.
  11. Well I went down this last weekend to bowhunt at the deer lease (didn't get anything) and wound up working on stands and such most of the time and only got to hunt once. I saw one really nice buck as I was going down to check one of my stands and on the way out I saw one of these just standing staring at me. I was completely caught off guard. I didn't know what it was until I got home and fired up my computer. This sheep was huge! Had a huge set of horns. Several of the ranches near by have tall fences and exotics so we get a lot of Axis deer and an occasional Fallow deer passing thru our lease, but this was a first for me. If he passes by when I have a rifle in my hands, he is mine!
