  1. fritz, sounds like you are going to have a great day tomorrow and I wish you and yours the best of Thanksgivings. I know how great it is to enjoy the things that one has to be thankful for, especially the grandchildren. I have a grand daughter that I am having the joys of watching grow up and there is nothing else like it. You are right on about us having so much to be thankful for and one only needs to look around a bit to realize this. Well spoken words my friend. Have a great holiday. swamp_thing
  2. The site is indeed slow as have been a few others the last week or so. I am not convinced it is an invision problem in itself, but whatever the cause it is there. When you get to be my age it is hard to remember what you are thinking long enough to get it said!!LOL Oh well, to some that may be a blessing in itself. swamp_thing
  3. The well debated post about "How many guns are legal" has led to some interesting thoughts and debate in that post. I thought it might be worthwhile to consider a few things about this without stealing the thread so I decided to start this one. There are questions that have came up in my mind, which I would like to get your thoughts, to which I am taking directly from the other post. 1. Is there a definitive answer to this question or is it one of those things that is left intentionally vague so that it can be used in a manner that would suite the needs of a prosecutor in a particular case? Seems that there are some well hidden guidelines that constitute what is an arsonel. Do we have any hard and fast answers to this? 2. This statement by itself is in fact probably meaninless, but played into the hands of politicians and special interest groups could in fact have a very detrimental effect I would think. Take a society that is already being led peacefully down a path that gun ownership/rights are eccentually bad and feed the fuel with little thoughts like this and the desease begins to fester. In light of this event as well as the recent mall shootings one does not need to think that the politicians and anti's won't take full advantage here. 3. There should be no importance as to the number of other guns in one's household, unless of course that you are trying to build a case that people who would do bad things with a gun would be likely to have many of them. Seems to be leaning in a bad way to me here. 4. Here is another harmless statement to those of us that either own guns, or see them for what they are and see the owners for what they are. Problem arises when people who are already strickly against guns decide that gun owners are in fact actually nuts. Suddenly a seemingly innocent statement becomes dangerously biased as to meaning that only folks of twisted mentalities would own 30 guns. 5. Well, maybe the simple fact that the number of other guns in the house is irrelevent should have meant that the statement itself had no relevance, therefore was not news worthy. Am I suggesting censorship or political correctness by thinking that this was either just simple filler or was somehow intended to dress up a bad situation for a bit more media spotlighting? 6. Suppose people did decide to sue over this. They sure do for anything else. If the subject had been something other than guns or let's say drugs or some other "Bad" thing would it even had been mentioned. How about, the house contained over fifty barbie dolls? Now, if a seperate crime evolves at a later date due to this statement might the reporter not have added to the potential? 7. Finally, the sad truth is that due to the way things were worded, this statement and the words that followed are what will be burned into the mind of much of our population. Too many people today are willing to simply be led to believe what others want them to believe apparently because it is easier for them than to simply look for the truth. Folks, the news does report what they want us to hear and avoids what they do not. I have no intentions of starting any arguments here and hope that it does not do so. I"m betting in about six months when the political battlefield heats up with midterm elections this will come back to haunt us. Sorry I have rambled so long, but it seems in my simple mind to be of relative importance that we look at the path we are heading down. Simple news reporting, sticking only to the facts that are of relevance is what news should be, but of course that would be too boring and serve no other agendas. swamp_thing
  4. This is a well thought out list of tool descriptions that can only have come from someone that has hands on experience. Much more accurate than those engineer based descriptions found on the packages they originally came in. It is refreshing to find such a detailed listing of tool uses and descriptions. Good job. swamp_thing
  5. While it is true that the article did not say the guns were illegal it also made no hint as to whether or not they were legal, thus leaving the whole thing open to the minds of anti's running amuck. Actually, what difference did it make if the house contained one gun or one thousand guns? Sadly, every time something like this makes the news it is used as fuel to the argument that guns are indeed bad. As has been said many times before, the guns have no ability to do bad, only the hands of the one holding them. Those same people would tend to do evil with whatever means they had at hand, whether it be a gun, knife, car, poison dart or whatever. Sensationalizing anything only leads to negative results. swamp_thing
  6. Just think about this fritz, had you done this maybe sixty to eighty years ago and in the russian homeland it may have been such a successful design that the rifles would have been renamed Mosin Nagant Fritz, and been official adopted as the official sniper model for the soviet empire. Don't fret about those that didn't like it, they are only jealous that the soviets did not do it. They can't bring themselves to change and so cannot except that others can. Funny to me is that the original militaries could drill the receivers for their mounts, but no one else should. Oh well, to each his own. There are indeed plenty to go around. swamp_thing
  7. MorgansBoss, In light of recent events I too have decided that the best course of action on my part is to not post or comment on these type of things. Sadly what you say is very true in many respects and in the interest of not causing ill feelings and angers to flare I shall in the future try to stick by this decision. Hopefully by doing so I can avoid contraversies on the boards. swamp_thing
  8. Sounds like it was a great hunt for the Nobles. I have never hunted any kind of terrain that comes close to the area described here. It would certainly take someone with real dedication to spend the time and effort these guys put into this hunt. When I was much younger, I hunted the ozark mtns in Arkansas and thought that area could be real taxing after a day or two of walking/stalking. Definately proves trophy bucks are smart enough to stay off the beaten path. Great article flaco. swamp_thing
  9. Doble, you are quiet correct about not having to have a mill to do this. It would be a great saver of work, but as you stated can be worked around. On the two piece stocks I have done, I have done all cutting with a table saw, circular saw and then rasps chisels and files. Have used my drill press for the holes. It can be done albeit with a bit more work. I guess when it comes down to it, health issues are the biggest deterent to me starting a project like that. Each successive stock has gotten to be more difficult and therefore the fun is going away. Funny how when something we love becomes work the desire dwindles. LOL swamp_thing
  10. While that is true, I have also heard that walnut smoke is not good to breath. Besides all my friends know the true on that line. I will probably attempt it one day, but it will be with low value wood. swamp_thing
  11. sonic1, for me it would be real scary to start out with a blank that was 250.00 and know that it only takes one wrong move to make match stick material out of it. I have spent close to 175.00 on semi inlet stocks and that scares me enough. Of course, for the guys that do this for a living that is probably pocket change prices. I have heard of blanks that got into the thousands range. I would never have that kind of cash or confidence. swamp_thing
  12. Definately a lot of hard labor in that project. It amazes me the amount of skills that some people possess. He did a beautiful job on the project. I have made two piece stocks from a block of wood, but I have not been able to bring myself to try it with a one piece stock. If I did I would have to do all inletting and shaping by hand, as I don't have the mills etc that it would otherwise require. Maybe someday I will try it, who knows. swamp_thing
  13. A young cowboy walks into a seedy cafe in Texas. He sits at the counter and notices an old cowboy with his arms folded staring blankly at a full bowl of chili. After fifteen minutes of just sitting there staring at it, the young cowboy bravely asks the old cowpoke, "If you ain't gonna eat that, mind if I do?" The older cowboy slowly turns his head toward the young wrangler and in his best cowboy manner says, "Nah, go ahead." Eagerly, the young cowboy reaches over and slides the bowl over to his place and starts spooning it in with delight. He gets nearly down to the bottom and notices a dead mouse in the chili. The sight was shocking and he immediately pukes up the chili into the bowl. The old cowboy quietly says, "Yup, that's as far as I got, too."
  14. Very nice project collection there724wd. The Chilean 1912s are very nice actions. I have one in orig barrel and the receivers are amoung the nicest in my opinion. I must say though that I am even more impressed with the carving. Great work. swamp_thing
  15. I did not know what it would take. I guess I was thinking of the sites that had links headings like ours, or libraries like the one on The High Road. It was just something that came to mind as a possibility. swamp_thing
  16. FC, I have wondered but don't know, what would it take to get sites such as TFL and Gunboards to let us link off their sites? Have you checked these possibilities? I would guess you have and may even already be doing so. I just know they get a lot of traffic and it might be a shot. Of course, a certain one site would be a no I am sure. Can't picture our site advertised on Bills place. That would be a hoot. swamp_thing
  17. Funny how many times I had seen them logged onto the site viewing the contents. I would have figured otherwise, but we live and learn. It seems to be a trend with more and more places to go this way. My guess is the big money interests control their contents and little folks mean nothing to them as with so many others. As of this posting my home page will now change and I will cease to use them. I know, what will they care, but I will feel better. swamp_thing
  18. Up until now i have refrained from posting on this subject because I do not consider myself to be anywhere close to an expert on stock finishing. More like fumbling amature would be my choice of description. I have turned out fine looking stocks using almost this same technique however. Like z1r stated in his post, I do not go any finer than 600 grit. Also, I don't use the rottenstone and my finish is mineral spirits with formby's tung oil. I dilute the first few coats of tung oil about 50/50 with the mineral spirits to get better penetration. Then I wet sand it into the wood to fill the pores as stated. After which I continue to add coats, sanding between each coat as above. The One Thing that I have learned the hard way is to not get impatient on drying time. On my first one I did this and after about five or six coats, prematurely applied the whole thing became a gummy mess. After it finally dried I had to resand and basically start from scratch. This was a valuable lesson which I won't soon forget. Patience is a virtue when finishing a stock and should be strictly adhered to. Hope this saves someone else a lot of heartache and grief. swamp_thing
  19. Here's one from an elderly nfighbor whom has since passed on. From the time you are born till you ride in the hearse no matter what happens it can always get worse
  20. Gentleman, whats wrong with that picture. For a mauser I have some questions. First off, whats with the spring in front of the trigger. Secondly, notice the straight down bolt handle which would have extended to the bottom of the stock? Thirdly, I see what appears to be a magazine retaining clip at the bottom front of the floorplate area. Anyone besides me see these things, and if so, what does that make this fine speciman. I bet is shoots great groups. swamp_thing
  21. That would be great if you had some kind of plans and info. I think it would be a real neat project to do. Thought I might like to try making one up of some kind just for the fun of it. I have never had the chance to shoot one, but can see where they would have some real advantages at times. No recoil, quiet, short range and just plain fun. I hope you can find the old plans. swamp_thing
  22. I am not sure where or even if to ask this, but was wondering if anyone here has ever build or thought of building a crossbow? I have been tossing around the idea of making some sort of crossbow, using the remains of an old stock from one of my old projects. I don't really have a set plan in mind at this time, and was looking to see if any of you have ever tried this out. Any suggestions along these lines would be appreciated. swamp_thing FC, If this is not appropriate here please feel free to move or delete.
  23. SAN FRANCISCO, November 3, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Palmdale school district in California wanted children in the first, third and fifth grades to think about sex as part of a study on “barriers to learning.” The court ruled that, “There is no fundamental right of parents to be the exclusive provider of information regarding sexual matters to their children... http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2005/nov/05110305.html This is one more example of where values are headed these days. I thought it was worth posting for those of us with young children. The link will take you to the complete story. swamp_thing
  24. Have been working on the bore some just today, first time I have got to get to it since I acquired it and did a preliminary cleaning. If I did not know better, I would say the inside of this rifle had been blued. It is not rust and there seems to be no pitting. May be just what you said. At any rate, after much cleaning it is almost to the point of shining in the grooves and the lands are shining. The lands are very sharp edged, no signs of wear. Not rounded edges at all, just nice and square. I do believe that with more work it will shine both lands and grooves. I look forward to giving the old gal a test firing in the near future. swamp_thing
  25. OK FLACO, I'll bite. Maybe it is a bunch of bull and maybe it is not. Are you so narrow minded as to think that there are not many things that go on daily that are pulled from the news? I suppose that it very well would make front page news all over the nation, especially if it served a purpose for those that control the media to begin with. I only posted what I read and voiced an opinion as to the fact that I am not fond of the news covering only what they want us to hear. Example, how many news stories do you see about how well things are progressing in Irag? Damn few would be the answer. Now how many do you see about how terrible it is and how we need to pull our troops out? Many on a daily basis. And why do you suppose that is. It's called politics and the media being pretty much Democratically controlled uses it to it's advantage each and every day. Is the story real? Your guess is as good as mine. You go on believing as you wish and I will do the same. One last thought, maybe it might be that if this was reported the immediate screams of racial predjudice would be enormous. If the end of your post was intended as name calling then so be it. Having had a moment to reconsider my response I have chosen to remove that from my response. swamp_thing
