  1. Krylon is quite durable if you sand and prime well. Put on lots of coats. I beat up my predator guns pretty badly, but when I get a scrape, I just sand the area and add to the camo!

    sayak,

    That's sharp!

I'm trying to imagine what a Russian sniper would do with a Nagant M91/30.

The gun will most likely never see the woods, the camouflage is just for the looks.

Did you paint right over the bluing?

What about the scope, what did you do to prep it?

    Thanks,

    Tim

  2. My preference would be flat white enamel from rustolium.

I dont think you need to worry about barrel heat, but if you feel that will be an issue, use high temp engine paint.

    Good idea!

Like I said earlier, the Duracoat is just a little too expensive.

    Thanks for the advice Ken!

Oh, what effect, of any, will cleaning solvents have on the paint job?

Also, would you go with the same paint for the scope and rings?

  3. i always liked dad's easy spray for stripping stocks but its getting harder to find.

i used the cheap oven cleaner a couple of times in the past but i don't think it done any better than the commercial wood strippers.

if its soaked with cosmo try washing it with mineral spirits

    dirtyjim,

    That looks like good stuff!

I'm going to check the local hardware to see if they can get some for me.

    Thanks for the advice.

  4. Has anyone used oven cleaner to strip a Mosin Nagant stock.

I have a Russian 91/30 which I'm going to refinish.

I've seen YouTube videos using hot water and Krud Kutter, but I thought I remember hearing something about using oven cleaner to strip old milsurp rifle stocks.

Please let me know if this is something that you have used.

    Thank you,

    Tim

  5. I've changed my mind about sporterizing the Finnish M39.

Instead I'm going to install the Burris 3-9X40 scope w/Rock Solid mount & bent bolt handle, and Huber trigger to a Russian M91/30.

    It's a Tula arsenal-refurbished dated 1932/50, a pretty nice piece, but not a 98% Finnish M39.

Here's my question for the forum...Stock Options.

    1) Refinish the M91/30 stock, with just enough modifications to fit the bent bolt handle and Rock Solid mount.

    2) Cut the M91/30 stock off at the hand guard (upper & lower), fit for bent bold handle & Rock Solid mount, and refinish.

    3) Replace the M91/30 stock with an ATI stock.

I'm interested in opinions and experiences using the above.

    Thanks,

    Tim

  6. This sound allot like a project I am gathering parts for but I'm going full sporter. Just got a VKT M39 barreled action, still need to get stock, trigger, bent bolt and scope mount. I'm thinking the Timney trigger and the Rock Solid scope mount and bent bolt as well. The sock, I'm leaning towards Boyd's.

Found this forum and post while looking for info on removing the sights from the barrel and just had to reply. So hello every body! :D

Any tips on removing the sights would be appreciated.

Go to YouTube and lookup "Sporterizing the Mosin Nagant".

There's an eight part series, and he gets into sight removal in one of the parts.

    Pretty good series.

  7. I hope I don't get into trouble for putting this in two different forums, but I believe I should have posted it in this one, not the Mosin Nagant forum...Sorry for the double post!!!

Finally, a forum where I won't be chastised for wanting to "upgrade" a Finnish M39 Mosin Nagant.

    Here's my project parts list...

A Finnish M39 Mosin Nagant, dated 1944, hex receiver, very good stock, pristine bore

"Rock Solid" Industries hex scope mount, bolt body w/bend handle, socket action screws & aluminum bedding pillars

    Huber Concepts trigger

CR Surplus S.S. firing pin spring

Max Shepherd pull ring cocking knob

Burris Fullfield II 3X-9X-40mm scope w/Burris rings (Note-I don't really care for a "scout" scope on a long range rifle)

I plan to keep the original M39 stock, because I really like the way they look. And I'm going to keep the iron sights, even though I won't be able to see them with the Rock Solid mount installed.

I'll probably have a gunsmith do the Rock Solid mount installation because I want to be sure it's true, square and level. And I just don't have access to the proper equipment to ensure this is done right, or the experience.

Has anyone out there "Semi-Sporterized" a Finn. M39?

Is there an aftermarket Mosin Nagant firing pin available?

I'm interested in hearing thoughts, suggestions, recommendations, cautions, etc., which will help me along with my project.

My goal is to end up with a 1"MOA (or better) Finnish M39, which can easily be used with my 47 year old eyes.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post.
