  1. Since most on this board regularly work on surplus german mausers, here's a question I ran up against the other day.

I'm working on a mauser 308 that's going into a bell & carlson sythetic thumbhole. It had a rough life so it's getting the heavy sand/pitt-filling/duracoat treatment & eventually no one will ever be the wiser that:

-it started life in Nazi germany in 1938

-was surrendered or picked up off a battlefield somewhere (assuming western front - the Ruskies didn't give theirs back or sell 'em)

-went to Israel sometime in the late 40's & blasted arabs

-got rebarreled to 7.62 NATO in the 50's

It has all the stamps that mark it's lifetime of movement - waffen stamps, star of david, big "7.62" designation on top, etc. All these are getting covered in filler & duracoated over & I've usually never given proof marks a second thought.

However...here's the question - on the bottom of the receiver, right behind the recoil lug, is a big swastika. Nothing else, just a big, ugly nazi stamp. Of course when the gun gets mounted to the stock, no one would ever know it's there, even if you took it apart you'd have to turn it over & give it more than a cursary glance...but this one stopped me in my tracks. I'm not usually a big symbol guy, but I had to think about this one.

In all likelyhood, this gun was fired at british, canadian or US GI's & the symbol represents one of the most evil regimes in (well) recorded history. After a few minutes of thinking about it, I held it to the bench grinder & obliterated it for all time.

What do you guys think? same situation, what would you do?

I would of left it on so no one would ever forget what went on at one time. That`s why the Israely`s problally left it on.

  2. Hi guys, it`s me again. I was shooting the Rem JSPFN 458 dia 405g bullets over 34g of Reloder 7 out of my originable M1873 TD & it is very accreate out to 200yds with this recipe. I can`t find the Rem`s anywere so I`m going to try some Oregon Trail Laser hard cast 459 dia 405g bullets in it. My question is, can I use the same ammount of RL 7 for these as I did for the Rem bullets? Thanks in advance.

  3. OK guys, I need a little help. Does anyone know of an on line vendor who sells Rem. 45-70 GOVT. 405g jacketed bullets or same in another brand for reloading? My online supplier is out of them & I`ve been waiting over a month for them & they can`t give a time line when they will be in.

    Thanks in advance.

  4. Ok, I have an Interarms Mark X with the commersal 98 Mauser action on it in 270w. This rifle has a very fine metal & wood finish on it & it`s very accreate. The problem is, if I charge the mag with 1 round or up to 4 rounds I can recycle the bolt as fast as I can & each round will chamber & eject properly. But if I put in the 5th one the bolt will over ride it & the round will move forward from the bolt friction & start up the ramp, but the head will go down in the mag well & jam it up. I then have to release the mag door to get them out. Any thoughts on this problem, & if so is it a quick fix? Thanks in advance------------mauserman69

A critique of liberalism: CRT scholars favor a more aggressive approach to social transformation as opposed to liberalism's more cautious approach, favor a race conscious approach to transformation rather than liberalism's embrace of color blindness.

While the Whites are told to be color blind...

    Nothing works???

  6. I checked a couple of local smiths and the going rate seems to be $25 per hole to drill and tap. If I have the scope base and iron sights done that comes to $175 worth of holes. I am going to continue on with my plan to do it myself.

They also want $150 to swap a barrel. That is just taking the old one out and screwing in the new one. I am definitely going to get a barrel vice and receiver wrench.

That`s the best way. Just do a lot of research on what you want to do & do it. That`s what I do & then you like I will feel that it`s done right & it usully is. If not, you learn by your mistakes. LOL

  7. Did anyone watch the debate tonight? I noticed & was wondering if anyone else noticed that there was no American Flag displayed. Shouldn`t there have been, or do you think CNN was afraid of offending one of the counties that they are in doing there so called reporting?

  8. Hi, I have a rifle stock that I want to refinish. It has a varnish type finish on it. I used paint & varnish remover on it & it did nothing. I`m thinking it might be polyurathane. I`m told that nothing will touch it if it is. Is there anything out there that will without having to sand it off? I really don`t want to sand a lot because it`s checkered. Thanks in advance.

  9. Thank you for the quick responses.

The Mauser is marked BYF41 on the top of the receiver, and it has German markings stamped in various places. Therefore I believe it to be a German WWII mauser manufactrued in Oberndorf Germany. I think that is correct!

I am looking for a barrel and sights that I can use with this action. I thought the simplest and cheapest way to go about this was to try and get an original barrel in very good condition along with the original sights. That would make it a shooter once again. The barrel that is on the rifle is so corroded internally I could not get it clean. I do not trust shooting the rifle. The rear sights have been removed, but the front sight is still on the barrel. The steps that were on the barrel have been remove. Don't ask me how, but it has been turned or ground down.

Numrich has original military barrels with sights selling for approx. $80.00 which they list as in good condition. I'm just not sure what they consider good condition. I don't think I want to risk injury.

I guess I could get an aftermarket sporter barrel and have sights installed as an option. If I do that, I would probably make it a 30.06

Call or e-mail Numrich & ask about the barrels. They are very good to deal with & do not lie to customers. I`m very satified with things I`ve bought from them.

  10. This is well said.

Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.), a former Army lieutenant colonel, sends THE WEEKLY STANDARD an email commenting on the Marines' video, and has given us permission to publish it.

“I have sat back and assessed the incident with the video of our Marines urinating on Taliban corpses. I do not recall any self-righteous indignation when our Delta snipers Shugart and Gordon had their bodies dragged through Mogadishu. Neither do I recall media outrage and condemnation of our Blackwater security contractors being killed, their bodies burned, and hung from a bridge in Fallujah.

“All these over-emotional pundits and armchair quarterbacks need to chill. Does anyone remember the two Soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division who were beheaded and gutted in Iraq?

“The Marines were wrong. Give them a maximum punishment under field grade level Article 15 (non-judicial punishment), place a General Officer level letter of reprimand in their personnel file, and have them in full dress uniform stand before their Battalion, each personally apologize to God, Country, and Corps videotaped and conclude by singing the full US Marine Corps Hymn without a teleprompter.

“As for everyone else, unless you have been shot at by the Taliban, shut your mouth, war is hell.”

  11. Hi

I have been a mechanic for 40 years and have all the shop tools except a lathe of the right type, however a good friend of mine is a master mechinest[sp?] with a shop. If I buy him a 6 pack and sit there with him and shoot the bull he will do the work for me.

He will also tell me if I am out of my mind to try to thread a part on .09 of metal.

It is a 180 mile round trip to his shop and back and that is why I wanted to see what everyone on this forum though about the ideal before I tried it. I have 3 barrels to experiment on so if 2 don't work I will still have one good one.

    Thanks

    Greg

Hey, your lucky. My mechinest friend who also has his own shop, now lives 600mi from me since I moved. Any machine work I need has to wait until I get back to visit family (twice a year) & that`s when I get to see him. It realy sucks sometimes as some little jobs I do myself with hand tools & if I get stuck, I call him & he will walk me through.

  12. Thoroughly rub the area of the repair with 0000 steel wool until you have broken the glaze and it is dull appearing. Do your repair and then re-tung it. I've done so many times, but I use Tru-Oil.

I made the repair & used the tung oil on it. It blended in perfectly & it came out as before. Can`t tell the differanc.

  13. Hi, like the heading says. I have a sporterized 1917 & it wasn`t done by bubba either. Would like your opinion weather the barrel is original or an after market sporter one? It `s 23 1/2" L from receiver joint to end. Only marks are on underside of it 14" down from receiver which is a circle with a triangle in it with a circle in the triangle & an oval with VP inside it. At the rec-bar joint there is a witness punch mark. On the right side of the receiver under the chamber there is a long oval with CNS inside it, what does that mean? Thanks in advance.
