Ken,
I already gave the gauges, Was just wondering if the reamer wouldn't work.
Bob
You'll need go/no go, headspace guages. The reamer is just used to create the chamber, the guages are used to determine the depth of the chamber.

I found a US 30-06 military reamer, 1903 Springfield. I'm building a 30-06 for my son and want to know if this reamer is OK to set head space after I install the barrel?

Spiris,
What kind of stock do you have on you Turk?

P. S. I ordered my 35 Whelen barrel from E R Shaw for my Turk build. They were upfront that would be at least 16 weeks turn around. So it is not a matter of time just poor service.
Thank You for your time.
Ralph
Ralph,
Could you keep us posted on your 35 Whelen build. I'm planning on the same build latter this years.
Thanks,

I have the aluminum heat sink, but I try to drape some wet rag on the lugs and heat sink using my old school welder.
Spiris
Spirits, are you using an arc welder? If so what rod do you use?

Tinker,
I'm rebuilding a Turk, bought a Remington 700 barrel that is rethreaded and short chambered to 30-06. I'm going to give this one to my son in Alaska and I wanted it to be chambered so that he could just buy ammo off the shelf. I have another Turk that I may must rechamber to 8mm-06.
Bobg
They should work for any 06 based case you may be using 25, 270, 30, 8MM, 338, 35W
The usual thing about military gauges is that they tend to be more generous than SAMI.
I think more so with the 'No-go' than the 'Go'. A military 'No-go' usually falls in between a
SAMI 'No-go' and 'Field'. If you cut your chamber so that there is just the slightest drag
with the 'Go' then you don't need to worry about the 'No-go'.
Just be sure to clear your chamber of chips before you check.
So tell us more about your project. What '06' based cartridge are you going with?

I found a set of U.S. Ord. Dept 30-06 headspace gauges. I'm not familar with this type of headspace gauges, but I'm going to need some when I rebarrel my Turk. Will this set of gauges work or are they something special?

You don't need a spacer/washer between the shoulder of the barrel and receiver. The barrel will seat inside the receiver on the C ring, the shoulder of the barrel is the secondary shoulder. You can by A&B short chambered threaded small shank barrels from Brownells and Midway for less than a $100. What's the diameter of the barrel threads in the receiver? Small shank barrels have a .980? diameter and large shank barrels are 1.1"

Don,
Nice looking wrench and vise. I wish I had access to a mill. We do have a big old drill press at work and I think they have bits up to 2 inches. I'll have to check.
Sent the payment for the barrel today.
Bob
Bob, here's what I build to use. Pretty simple project if you have access to a mill.

Ken,
I spent 10 days in Fairbanks in early August. I had a granddaughter born 10 weeks early, so we spend a lot of time in the NICU. My son lives in Healy, hopefully I'll make it up next summer.
Gun Nutty,
I do have access to a lathe and I may this time cut the barrel to remove it. We have a newer LeBlonde with a six foot bed and a older South Bend with a four foot bed. I like the South Bend better, it always takes me an hour to figure out all the levers on the Le Bond.
Bob
I'm in the Fairbanks area. A 30-06 will serve your son well.
Here's a link to a barrel vise problem I had several years ago. http://www.sporterizing.com/index.php?showtopic=1996&st=0
I ended up replacing the wood blocks with steel with a 1 1/2" hole. I now have a lathe so I make my own bushings from 1 1/2" aluminum round stock.

Hi Ken,
Thanks for the advise, I'd seen the internal wrenches, but don't know a lot about them. I just bought my first Turkish Mauser and I'm going to rebarrel it to 30-06. Will probably give it to my son in Alaska. Where in Alaska are you from?

I am going to be rebarreling my Turkish Mauser and don't have a barrel wrench or vise. Can you chuck the barrel in a lath chuck(lock the chuck) to remove the barrel or will it not hold it? Also I've seen receiver wrenches that fit into the receiver? The one I seen had a bar that was the same size as the lugs on the bolt and then a rod welded to it. Would these work?

Just curious if the reamer sharing coop is still active. Have a reamer I'll probably loan out in the near future.
