    270-57

Tony If you want to experiment and do it somewhat more cheaply..... hows about a Remington 270 barrel on a Turk receiver? I think it would be fairly easy to shorten up the Remington barrel to where a "57" reamer would work. Heck, I think I've got a prime candidate for that in my drawer. You'd have to do the math and see where on the 270win case and the "57" case the diameters concide and then figure the length from there. Just thinking out loud, if there is a "gots ya" I'm sure someone will think of it. Tinker
  2. Hope you get this in time. The reports I've heard say possibly 2 feet of rain , that's 24" of rain. Just consider this if you are in low country. My best wishes for you and all in Rita's path Tinker
  3. Jerry I'm planing on doing exactly as MB describes. I've got all the parts all I need is the time to put it together. I got the arbor adapter, stand and buffing wheel from Harbor Freight. We get thiese great motors that have years of life left in them at work that have to be changed out for PM long before they might fail since they are in a piece of life support equipment. I could even send you one if you would pay the shipping. I don't know what your time table is. I'm certiain I'll get to it in the next few months. I could send you a pic when I get it all together, so you can visulize it . Tinker
  4. It just boggles the mind that despite having a city below sea leval and an entire lake held back by 100+ year old leevies; that no one apparently ever formulated a disaster plan for when the leevie breaks. Do you think the folks out in Los Vegas just assume that the big dam up the road will NEVER EVER break? Or do you think they have a disaster plan in place?
  5. Well I've certianly heard of ( phoneticly ) crime-a-knee. Then there is 'Geezs crime-a-knee'. Have you heard of crime-a-knitly?
  6. If you need something changed or done differently, you might try to make them feel as if it were their idea or at least had some input on it. There is far less resistance to being asked (their idea ) to do something than being told ( your idea ) to do something. Best of luck!! Tinker
  7. I've seen something similar before. I'd say that Jerry is on to something. When I've seen this before, it was with a heavier coating siting 'on top of' rather than bonding to the stained wood. Perhaps if at least the first bonding coat were thinned out as Jerry suggests, it might not have bubbled.
  8. Farmall I think we have the seed of a good idea here. I'll choose to continue the discussion and explore the possibilities. If it doesn't pan out , well so be it. So gents if we can avoid the ' it can't be done (reasonably)' comments and keep the ideas flowing; that would be great! Glad I got that off my chest!! Rebel49 & carzngunz had some great comments. I was also concerned about the force needed to cut the grooves. I was wondering if rather than actually cutting the grooves if they might be honed. In this case the pioletd broach might have the diamond dust coated material rather than carbide cutters. The 'cutters' then might have either a spring loaded mechinsm or a turn a screw to adjust mechinism for each pass. I like the idea of a pioleted reamer to cut the lands.
  9. Farmall I don't recall if I posted it on the other board last year when I had the same idea of taking an 8MM and going to .357 for a 35Wheelen. I kind of like the come along idea. I never liked the idea of push rods to drive the broach. Actually I was thinking a two broach (two step) process might work best. Broach #1 has 8MM pilot and cuts the grooves to the proper depth ( .338 / .357 ). Broach #2 has pilot of the new cal grooves and cuts the lands behind it. The two step process both cuts the cutting force in half for each pass and allows for easier handeling of half the amount of cuttings per pass. Only experimentation would necessarily prove it, I was wondering if a series of broaches steping up in caliber would work better. For instance to get to my .357, would it be better to cut your .338 first rather than going directly from 8mm to .357? Tinker PS Man If you can figure how to fabricate the broaches, I'd be glad to work with you on it.
  10. I'm 50 and don't know what it is either. Perhaps it was something regional and it never came to our part of the country.
  11. Well I payed Garry at the guide twice what I should have because he said that it was "stainless". Silly me I thought he meant 'stailess steel' but it was just in the white. If I build a gun with mine rather than sell it ( doubtfull I could break even), I was thinking that I'd taper it to look like a sporting barrel rather than a mil. barrel.
  12. "Tinkerfive" Well I loved the movie "Short Circuit" and was using the handle 'jhoniefive' as in the movie. At one point I thought it was time for a change that was more suited to me. I love to be mechanically creative ( now a bubba in training ) so I thought that "Tinker" was fitting. I tried to get a Yahoo account with "Tinker" but "Tinker" was taken. So I tried and "Tinker1, Tinker2, and Tinker3" were all taken. So by then I thought I'd try combining "Tinker" and "Jhoniefive" then "Tinkerfive" was born. But I'll still sign off..... Tinker
  13. Sorry Emalu, I got em all too. No training just an observer of life and thererfore a good judge, something in the eyes I guess.
  14. Fellas When it's slow at work I've checked in on the site. I had a bookmark for the Easy Boards site and when we switched I bookmarked this site as well. At work they have "Nanny" software called "websense" to keep folks from surfing porn, downloading music files etc. The Websense kept me from going to the dealer sites so you couldn't buy "weapons" at work. I never had a problem going to the Easy Boards site, and still can. Guess what, I clicked on my bookmark today for this site and guess what it was blocked as a "weapons" site. The name is the same as the Easy boards site so Websense isn't looking at the name. Someone had to place this site on a blacklisted "weapons" list.
  15. An Arkansas farmer got in his pickup and drove to a neighboring farm and knocked at the farmhouse door. A young boy, about 9, opened the door "Is yer Dad home?" the farmer asked. "No sir, he ain't," the boy replied. "He went into town." "Well, said the farmer, is yer Mom here?" "No, sir, she ain't here neither. She went into town with Dad." "How about your brother, Howard? Is he here?" "He went with Mom and Dad." The farmer stood there for a few minutes, shifting from one foot to the other and mumbling to himself. "Is there anything I can do fer ya?" the boy asked politely. "I knows where all the tools are, if you want to borry one. Or maybe I could take a message fer Dad." "Well," said the farmer uncomfortably, "I really wanted to talk to yer Dad. It's about your brother Howard getting my daughter, Pearly Mae, pregnant." The boy considered for a moment. "You would have to talk to Pa about that", he finally conceded. "If it helps you any, I know that Pa charges $50 for the bull and $25 for the hog, but I really don't know how much he gets fer Howard."
  16. I have a P17 Eddystone that you can see the cracks when you know what to look for. Otherwise try this.... Soak it in gasoline for a min. then pull it out and dry it off (paper towls) and look adjacent to the barrel for gasoline weeping up out of cracks running parallel with the bore ( lengthwise to the action)
