  1. Well!!! That explains a few tings about what I prefer to do, my great grandmother was Seneca. Tinker
  2. I had contacted ATI inquiring if they had any " seconds " that would only affect mounting their scope rail, explaining that I preferred a traditional scope mount. Hey I didn't want to pay for something that I was going to throw away anyway. Their response was that they don't have " seconds ". Well a short time later I got one off of Gunbroker for a good price. I like the look & ergonomics but the things are heavy. I haven't weighed it against another but, it wouldn't surprise me if it went as much as a pound more than another stock. Tinke
  3. There is a wood working tool for copying profiles that may be helpful. You've probably seen it but haven't thought of it for this application. It has a row of pins right next to each other. You press it against the profile (receiver) you wish to copy then you can trace the profile now expressed in the row of pins on to the piece that is to mate with the original. Good luck Tinker
  4. Thanks, I may take you up on that. I have some fairly thick aluminum that I was thinking of using to fab a fixture. I would appreciate it if you could post some photos of your fixtures maybe against a ruler for scale and / or on the action, so that I could get a good idea of what I need to fab. Tinker
  5. I've got a drill doctor. Sometimes it seems to be hit and miss. Some bits just don't seem to get the right bevel. When that happens, I just go over to the bench grinder and finish it by hand. Tinker
  6. It got here Friday. Kind of dirty, a little rusty on the butt plate, barrel shot out, two mystery holes drilled through the stock into the mag well. I'm kind of wishing that I'd have poped for the extra $20 hand picked. Southern Ohio Gun 1 800 944 4867 Stock # SLG-M1GA Tinker
  7. It arrived Friday an H&R. The stock is almost black, it seems very dirty. Can I wipe it down with Kero or something to clean? Can I load in my No-go gauge to see if the bolt closes or are the mil specs wider than SAMI? Tinker
  8. Check these out. Do they look like they should fit? http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=165384625 Tinker
  9. check this out http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=164135790 Tinker
  10. Post a pic so we can see shade, etc. I may have one around here that might be a close match. Tinker
  11. Got my Spring SOG flier the other day and ordered one of the Garands. I've wanted one for some time but at prices of $500+ I've passed up until now. They must have gotten a deal to sell them at $429 or I'm in for an unpleasant surprise when it arrives. I'm looking for Garand specific care / maintenance / trouble shooting info. If y-all can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it. Tinker
  12. I've seen someone on Gunbroker that makes intermediate F-pins from std. pins. My guess is that one additional cocking piece groove is machined toward the front then the rear most lug is removed. I presume that this work is being done on a lathe. Hope this helps Tinker
  13. I think that Gunparts has the same barrel for less. T
  14. I've got most of a 1886 Hopkins and Allan shotgun. Any similarity? Can you post any photos or links? Tinker
  15. I suggest that you check back through the posts under the Mosin Naget forum. What you have stated above I believe to be incorrect as a result of the story being repeated from one person to the next. To my knowledge there is no question of the Mosin action strength. The 7.62X54R is near equal to 30-06. The unsafe conversion had to do with the barrel not the action when converted to 30-06 not .308. The barrel was first shortened removing the portion of the original chamber that was larger than the 30-06 then the chamber was cut for the longer 30-06 which extended the chamber out to where the barrel tapered down too thin and some barrels had failed. If a converted Mosin were re-barreled with a proper barrel I'd think it to be as safe as any properly barreled Mauser. The interesting point to the story as you tell it is that if the conversion were to .308 instead of 30-06, it would have been safer because the .308 is so much shorter. Don't take my word for it, check it out for your self. The discussion on this wasn't that long ago. It shouldn't be too hard to find. Tinker
  16. unless it is causing the moderators issues, I'd say if it ain't broke don't fix it. Tinker
  17. RE: my PM I must have screwed up because it's late, the PM with the address etc. disappeared. Please PM me again. Tinker
  18. Welcome Bob! Glad you found us. If you make a post under the 'for sale' heading, you might find that someone has an extra in their stash that they may be willing to part with. Tinker
  19. FYI There are windage adjustable Weaver style rings out there. If I remember correctly the ones I saw were by Millet. Tinker
  20. Hey all, I don't have anything against Brownells in fact I may end up going with them. I've got 2 receivers with the front guard screws broken off. I didn't do it! I drilled through them at just about the minor thread diameter and tried EZ-outs without success. I was thinking that if I could get the tap started in the original thread that I could tap out the remains of the screws. So I was wondering if there was another source out there. Surprisingly Midway doesn't seem to have them, at least not that I could find on line. I found some less expensive alternatives around $14 but not both tap and die from the same supplier so if I want both there is S&H X2. That kind of negates getting both from Brownell with 1 S&H. One die was around $7. If you guys know of another alternative supplier, please let me know. If you want to know what I've found, I'll get my notes together and post them. If you can think of another way to get out the remnants of the screws, please let me know. Tinker
  21. Welcome Bill! I have a Mauser 98 in .308 that came by way of Israel. It has no mag block and feeds fine. Between my one son and I, it has taken 4 deer. Right now it is in pieces in my shop for a remodel job while my son is in college he can't get off for hunting. I'm sure yours will come out fine. Now if you want a bit more challenge (feeding wise) try a 7.62X39 on a 98 action. I built 2 of those on 03 Turk intermediate actions. I've used the shorter barreled one with a .308 bore for the last 2 years and took a deer both years. The other one has a .311 barrel. The ammo I have is loaded up with .308 bullets, so the .308 bullets go with the .308 bore. If I run into ammo with .311 bullets,I'll give the other one a try. Tinker
  22. Last that I ordered from Midway the discount was 20%, that takes the Midway price to around $72 if I did the math in my head right.
  23. Oh! a "RINO" just like Arlen Spector. Oh Lord! we got one on each coast. At least Eddie Rendell ran on the Dem. ticket.
