  1. OK, this is a point of curiosity. I'm certainly not familiar with every bolt action out there but how many have 2 torque shoulders in stead of one? I know that he P14/P17 Enfield didn't and they are very desirable for magnum actions. I was wondering when Remington started making the 798 if they might thread them at 16 tpi and eliminate the C/H ring to use the same barrels as the 700. All they would have to do is adjust the shank length, eliminate the 'tits' on the bolt like a Yugo and make an extractor cut. Could the barrel shank be lengthened and the C/H ring eliminated or, does it really serve a vital purpose? Now I know from pulling plenty of military barrels that the shank was only 1.1 and left nothing to torque up to the "secondary" shoulder. I'm asking in regard to if you had a barrel shank configured like a Remington or the P14/P17 Enfield. Tinker
  2. In my other post Teresa Heinz was brought up. This reminded me of what a great Republican John Heinz was. This led me to wonder how men like him and Arnold who are such staunch Republican figures could choose mates that are ideologically so diametrically opposite. I've heard the saying 'opposites attract' but how many guys could have a mate that thinks the world should work so differently from the way they believe it should? Lets not turn this into a Repub. Vs. Dem. thing; it's just about mates being like minded Vs. opposite minded. Tinker P.S. Politically speaking, my wife and I are on the same page.
  3. You guys can go back to buying the Heinz products because you aren't going to hurt Teresa any. The company was sold to Delmonte a few years ago. They only owned it two or three years and sold it to someone else. I don't know who owns the H.J. Heinz company now. With John Heinz gone, she had no interest in the company, she took the money and probably gave it to Kerry. Tinker
  4. I went to the second hand store ( Goodwill ) and got a few old lace table cloths. You can throw the table cloth over the stock in different directions and spray through the table cloth. I got cloths with different patterns. I was thinking of using a different pattern for different colors ( brown, gray, light / dark green, black ). Tinker
  5. Hey guys the other night the wife was surfing Overstock dot com and pointed out to me that they have a 'hunting' section. I checked it out and there were about 7 pages worth. About 4 of the pages were scopes. I had just gotten a J&G flier the day before and noted that they both seemed to have the same handgun safe. J&G wanted $99+ shipping and overstock wanted $109 including shipping. That seemed to be pretty much equal. I was wondering if anyone else has used Overstock and what you guys thought about their pricing. Tinker

  7. Is it that folks on that side of the Atlantic Ocean refer to land diameter and we refer to groove diameter? Speaking of 7.92MM..... That is how the '8MM Mauser' (.323 groove) is referred to sometimes and as it works out the land diameter is .311. I always thought that 7.62X54R was a .311 bullet ( groove diameter). I haven't measured it but I'd guess that the land diameter is just about .308. Tinker
  8. OOPS!! Just noticed, he typed 1988 but meant 1888.
  9. You will also sometimes see this referred to a 7.92X57
  10. Jim I've been following your other posts in "sporterizing'. Do you have any other references for you conversions aside from you Bannerman? If there is something that you could post a link to, I for one would like to see those references. Thanks Much! I've got an M44 that I'd like to do something with. Tinker
  11. Are you planning on spinning each barrel on or something like an interrupted thread? If you check the archives you may find a few years ago one fellow went into the interrupted thread idea at some length. I lost interest when it was realized what would be involved in correcting for the the various points of impact with one scope. I didn't want to refer to some chart / table of correction factors for each barrel. I guess that you might have a scope mounted to each barrel in scout configuration. What aiming method have you come up with to deal with the different points of impact of different barrels? Best of luck with you project, by the way. We love to see creativity here. And also a hearty WELCOME!!! to the board! Tinker
  12. Jerry My sincere condolences! My parents both were the youngest children of their families and I am the youngest child, so I had very little time to know my grandparents. All four were still alive but quite elderly when I was young. They were all gone by the time I graduated from high school. My last uncle died a few weeks ago. My parents are the last of their generation. Still living at home at 86 and 87 and won't have it any other way ( for now ). Enjoy your parents while you have them. Craig
  13. Clark's name sticks out because he is the boards resident master of destructive testing. I don't think that he is the one. Well I was curious so I had to do the math to see how it would work out. Using a 1" 16tpi bolt reference, my son ( the engineer ) looked up and found that the minor diameter spec was .924. As the 12tpi threads went around and crisscrossed the 16tpi threads the OD of the barrel would vary from .98 down to .924 when the 12tpi crest met the 16tpi valley. At those points rather than a .05 tall/thick thread, the thread would only be .022 tall. I imagine that this would follow a spiral pattern. I think that you'd have to see one done to evaluate for yourself. I hope my math is correct Tinker
  14. This question came up several years ago and one member said that he'd done it several times. First off you'd want to turn 1.0 down to .98 so you'd loose the top of the 'V' on the major diameter of the 1X16. I wish that I knew what that minor diameter would be. Rest assured that it doesn't run close to the .88 for the .98X12 of the Mauser. So when you are done your OD on your barrel is kind of choppy where the 16 TPI and 12 TPI cross but the minor diameter should be a nice clean 12 TPI. The load bearing surface is somewhere between the major and minor diameters anyway because the major diameters of the male and minor diameter of the female threads are the thinnest parts of the thread. I'll try to put it another way. If the 'choppy' part of the male barrel thread doesn't exceed more than 1/4 of the thread height it probably makes little difference. You do the math and decide for yourself. It's something that I've considered doing but haven't done yet. I wish that I could remember who the member was that had done several. Truth be told I'd play it safe and set the shoulder back as much as possible to cut into virgin barrel. If half or more ofthe length of the thread shank length could be into virgin barrel that would be better. You have to weigh that against how deep you can extend the chamber safely. Tinker
  15. I'd be interested in one. This should get posted up in sporterizing where it will get seen better. Tinker
  16. I know that the VZ is Brno made. I guess I'm confused as to where Zastava is and where in Czechoslovakia is the Brno factory? What does the circled Z proof mark stand for? Obviously still learning Tinker it is cz's trademark
  17. Brian Turn your VZ action over and check the bottom for a Z inside a circle. That is for the Zastava factory proof mark. Whomever is just referring to the bolt by where it was made. VZ 24 is just the short rifle version of the 98-22. You can't tell by looking at the bolt which gun it was made for. They were all products of the Checho. Zastava plant at different times. Now as to the barrel, I never heard of a 300 win mag. coming out of Zastava Although I've been wrong before, I think that it was likely made by someone else. As far as fitting is concerned, if the barrel is cut for a large ring Mauser 1.1 X 12tpi it should likely fit. If you are lucky it will be a tight fit. Tell dad that you need some father son bonding time. Surely you could talk him into staying late some evenings or going in on Sunday with you. It's not a 24X7 shop is it?
  18. Who's crest? South American are rather prone to pitting, European less prone.
  19. Well since I'm STILL trying to finish my porch project, let me say this. Under no circumstances enter into something like this UNLESS you have AT LEAST 3 other people that you can count on to help. Preferably they will already have skills and tools. I don't just mean a hammer. I'm talking compound miter saw, back-hoe, nail gun, scaffolding, ladders, etc. Almost always you will want at least 1 other person working with you and all 3 of them at times. Two people are not enough to raise a framed wall. If you have 1 friend who is a plumber, 1 friend who is an electrician and, 1 friend who is a carpenter; then you might be good to go. The voice of experience. Tinker
  20. Thanks for the replies!! Sounds like I can take the 18" barrel and cut it in half at 9" and be just about optimum and still have another 9" section for a second project. Thanks again!!! Tinker
  21. There is a thread over in 'Sporterizing' that got me thinking about hanging a new barrel on my .357. At present it is a 2" snub nose. I'm interested in getting the most muzzle velocity and accuracy practical. Apparently there is an inexpensive .357 barrel available that is 18" long. I don't know about hanging an 18" barrel on a hand gun. At what barrel length do you reach a point of diminishing returns? For instance what length of barrel would it take to burn 80%,90%, 100% of the powder? Thanks in advance!! Tinker
  22. Is this a 35cal barrel? that you are talking about? If so would you mind telling how much and where, if there are more to get. I got a 357 with a 2" snub nose that is crying for a re-barrel to something significantly longer. So there is one suggestion. Hang it on a six shooter 357 hand cannon.
  23. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380193730345&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT I already got mine Tinker
  24. I assume that you mean re-chambering to 8mm-06. You shouldn't need to do anything with the follower. As to the magazine the answer is 'it depends'. It depends on what type of bullet you reload with. Most round nose varieties won't give you an over all length that would necessitate lengthening the magazine. Now if you want to use spire points that is another story. I have the reamer and gauges and intend to make one of mine into an 8mm-06. I figure to leave the mag alone and use round nose bullets until something motivates me to try spire points. Then I'll deal with the magazine length issue. Tinker
