  1. Try lubing your case with anhydrous lanolin. I've used for years as a reloading case lube and also used it to resize 7.65 Argie's out of 30-06. Best I've found.
  2. Thanks Don for the info. I'll have to get me one.
  3. Don, what diameter bit are you using?
  4. I too rust blue and I use the brownells tanks. The 6x6x40" allows me more than enough room to blue the action, barrel, bottom metal and misc. peices at one time.
  5. AWESOME Z !!!! I can hardly type for the druel on my keyboard. Z, I don't know what you do for a living but I can certainly tell what who should be doing for a living. Beautiful Job, How about some step by step insrtuctions and photos on your lower assembly mods. rwims
  6. Very impressive, don't you feel proud when something you build performs that well.

    Retiring

This senerio is true. A elderly lady where I live, retired, sold her home, and moved into one of the local hotels and did this very thing. The lady was not destitute but frugal. She did not want to pay the price for an assisted living residence which she could afford but didn't need. She became such good friends with the staff and manager of the hotel that when the manager was transfered to a hotel in central Texas she moved to to be close to him. She has all the comforts of home with minimal costs.
  8. My apologies this post was intended for another topic.

    Sabbatical

Good luck FC, you have my sympathy in raising your girls. Do a Karl suggested, see if you can find an acredited school that offers what you need online. Some schools have programs that will give you credit towards your degree for work experience, check that out too, it could shorten your class time. Don't worry about us we'll survive. It'll be tough but take care of your family first. rwims
  11. I'm leaning toward the restoration but the guest's comments about cost compared to value is my dilemma. rwims

    What The F**k

    Swamprat, what did I miss?
  13. I purchased a Remington 03-A3 that was sporterized. It has been drilled and tapped. My dilemma is do I want to restore it to as close to original condition as possible, which would be complete less drill & tap, or continue with the sporterization and reblue replace stock and so on. What would be considered the maximun caliber and case size for this action? Last but not least, I remember reading about brittle 03-A3 actions and was wondering if that applied to the Remington manufactured actions? Thanks, rwims
  14. I recently purchased a remington 700 CDL 243 Win. barrel for my turk project. Can anyone tell me what type of finish Remington puts on these barrels? It doesn't appear to be blued, it almost feels like some kind of coating. I don't have any experience with Duracoat or any thing like that but if that is what it is I would like to do the action to match. Thanks, rwims

    Optimum Barrel Length

I agree with Fritz, go for balance. Keep in mind a ruger 10/22 has an 18-1/2" barrel and it seems short. rwims
  16. Beautiful gun Keith. You did a fine job. rwims
  17. No, it is their Pilkington(not sure of spelling) rust blue solution. I've had very good results with it. Thanks for the compliments. As I said, ya'll helped. So pat yourselves on the back too. I like to give credit where credit is due. My hands may have done the work, but ya'll's combined knowledge that allowed it. rwims
  18. Thanks Jim, I did it all. I used the rust bluing from Brownells. I did shoot it in a composite stock but have not shot it in the walnut stock. rwims
  19. Well here it is. I finally completed my 35 Whelen. It is on a 98-22 action with an A&B f34 barrel, claro walnut stock with ebony forend and grip cap, and a pachmyr recoil pad. Unknowingly ya'll have helped me build it through your questions and answers. [attachmentid=145] [attachmentid=146] [attachmentid=147] [attachmentid=148] Thanks, rwims

    Stock Finish

Thanks Z, I was hoping that is what I needed to do, it will make shaping much easier.

    Stock Finish

I have a question as to when is the proper time to install an ebony forend and grip cap on my walnut stock? Should I install them before I begin the wet sanding to seal the wood and if I do will it cause a discoloration of the walnut area? Or do I wait until after I seal the walnut and before I apply the final coats of tung oil. Open for Suggestions, rwims
