  1. Great responses. Thanks! I've really been thinking Mannlicher on this one. I really don't mind the steps on this short barrel especially when compared to a 96 that I bought that had been sportered. The steps on the shorter barrel giver a nicer proportion. BobVZ, Did you ever get the Columbian in 30-06 to shoot well. I have one in a sportered military stock that will do 3-4 inches at 100yds. I floated the barrel and am thinking that I need to add some pressure points to give it another try.
  2. I've been leery of recontouring the steps. Does this in some way influence the metalurgy or harmonics of the barrel in a negative way? I don't have a good reason for feeling this way.
  3. Should a fella really worry about AI on a vz24 action or even reaming to 280? Or would the physics of the barrel support the lengthened case of a 280?
  4. Sounds like the 175grainers I bought on Ebay before they got PC will work in the deeper throat. How much do you reckon you gained with AI?
  5. I have a couple of the 7x57 mil barrels that have never been used. They look to be in excellent shape and I'm ready to use one. I was planning a rifle on a vz24 action and scoping it. I'm now considering aperture sights in a nice light weight mannlicher style stock with a drop comb. Have any of you used these barrels and if so, how were they for fouling, accuracy etc? Were you satisfied with them? Any idea on the History/Origin of these barrels? Were they German built for German rifles?
  6. Good to have you back. You are bounds ahead of me at the game and I get lost with what you are doing sometimes but I still like reading the posts. I'm still planning on getting some pics up of inletting for a metal grip cap and butt plate. It'll be slim but should get the idea out there.
  7. Nothing gun related but the wife did buy some bug armour for me after I got eaten alive by turkey mites back in late summer! We closed on a 57 acre farm a couple months ago so I didn't want a lot for Christmas this year. It was a good day just watching the kids and enjoying their fun. I have a 3yo son who got a set of "real" hand tools. He cut a dowel in half at the work bench and you'd think he'd won 10K from the look on his face!! It doesn't get much better.............
  8. I'm trying to figure out the concern over hurtful words. These are usually in "Fighting Words" where you would expect them unless something takes a tangent in "Chewing the Cud". We all get grumped every once in a while. Hopefully swamp was just having a bad day.
  9. I haven't seen his posts for quite a while. Always liked reading his stuff. I know that he was getting into some competitive pistol stuff in the summer but can't imagine him leaving sporterizing altogether. Has anyone heard anything from DT Lately? LC
  10. Please express our condolences to your family. Very saddening news.
  11. Don, That's looking good. You're making me rethink a couple of the older Fajens that I bought off E-bay. I've been afraid to remove the roll over b/c I wasn't sure that I had enough wood. That stock looks nice and sleek now! lc
  12. Kenny, I'll pass that on. I'd like him to focus on skills and maybe start to reload and shoot the '06 that he has a bunch. Once there he could look at some premo bullets once he develops good skill and make the old girl even more potential. Steve
  13. Thanks for all the input fella's! We had lunch today and talked about it a bit. We are talking about planning an elk hunt out west over the next few years. Well, we are now anyway! We've both been thinking of this separately and now are thinking of a joint hunt or linking up with some local guys that go out every year. As we talked it over he did say that he is a bit recoil sensitive. Another friend of his will be bringing a 300 Win Mag by for him to try out. I'm thinking that he won't like the recoil. I threw out the 338-06 and the 35 Whelen and the 338 Win Mag. He's going to research them a bit. From the conversation, I do believe that he's been influenced by someone who has magnumitis. He referred to a friend who bought a 300 Win mag (for whitetail) after a 270 didn't kill one and it ran off. (We're all thinking shot placement at this point). 724wd guessed another thing that's fueling the new gun idea. He has a fairly substantial bonus coming his way. He's got some play money and is thinking down the road a bit. I ended up suggesting that he consider a complete reloading setup and start working up loads and doing a lot of shooting to get really familiar with his gun. He has a perfect area to set up a 400+ yard range in a creek bottom. I hope that he starts there so that he can really develop a feel for different ranges with the guns that he now has. Then he'll see their potential.
  14. A friend wants me to help him think through what caliber a fella might need for a western elk hunt. He has an '06 which I'm sure is more than adequate in most situations. We'll talk it over at lunch on Wed. I think that he is being swayed by the magnum crowd, not that there is anything wrong with magnums, but I want to give him some good info on a cartridge that will have reasonable recoil and suggest that he focus on shot placement and knowing his rifle. Maybe I should ask it in the following way: WHat would be your non-magnum choice? What would be your magnum choice? Thanks, lc
  15. I sent an e-mail to e-bay and got much the same answer as posted above with a different name on it. I responded asking them to define "a safer marketplace" and how their decision will make a "virtual" marketplace safer. I can't wait for that response. I'm sure that they will really clear that on up for me. I'm not familiar with all the national 2nd amendment org's but would like to join something to help make a point. I'm a little sour on the NRA. What other orgs out there have Strong honest representation? lc
  16. Karl, Thanks for the heads up. I did call my Representatives office, Ed Whitfield, and was told that by the staffer that he is for control of immigration and has had resounding support to stop the illegal flow. Through a set of circumstances I wasn't able to contact my senator, Mitch McConnell, but was told that he had backed down from his earlier enthusiasm concerning the bill. I'll still be calling him and will check out his record on this vote. I'm fairly confident that he was receiving negative feedback on his stance. Viva La America! for now............. lc
  17. Congratulations! 724wd!! We have a 9 month old so the feelings are still fresh to the memory! A truly amazing thing. She's a beauty. lc
  18. Somewhere, I believe on the net, I saw the caption attached to a sewage sucker truck "We're #1 at #2".
  19. Looks like I have some "foot work" to do. I've used Thorlo socks before. They are expensive but I've noticed that they wear very comfortably and are durable. That nominal difference in cost means a lot in comfort. lc
  20. Tancredo from CO? has some nice conservative things to say also. With the failed "legalize the criminals" bill Bush appears to be splitting the Rep party a bit. It may be a good opportunity for a straight talking sincere conservative to step to the plate. lc
  21. Thanks again! Is there a particular model of the Red Wings that you'd recommend? lc
  22. The Wolverines have come up in a few conversations. I'll check them out and see if my dad finds them comfy. Thanks for the heads up on the gel inserts to. lc
  23. Hello guys, I'm looking for recommendations for work boots for my dad. He's getting a bit arthritic and will be 69 in October. I'm trying to find a quality boot that will absorb bit of the shock of standing around on concrete. What are ya'll seeing used and using? $ amount really isn't an issue (within reason) if they do the job. thanks, lc
