  1. I've been thinking about this from the view of the coordination needed between the spotter and the shooter. The only comparison that comes to me is the delay in combustion in a flintlock. I haven't fired on myself but from what I've seen and heard said there is a flash delay bang. I have experienced a slight delay at times shooting traditional BP rifle. Instead of just giving a license to the blind shooter, wouldn't you have to test the "team" shooter and spotter to see if their coordinated effort was sufficient for clean kills? I'd hate nothing more than to start seeing 3 legged deer hopping around the woods. Seems to me that there is a deeper ethical question here. I'm not against people doing what they can but some limitations flat rule out some activities. Just MHO LC
  2. Karl, Can you compare the perfect powder measure to a more expensive type ie the type that you use instead? I'd like to know as I haven't been satisfied with mine and don't know which way to go. It could help a new fella narrow down choices in used equip also. Thanks LC
  3. DT, Great report and Great work! That walnut is going to be beautiful!! I can't wait to see the finished product. I know what you mean about the chip outs. I'm at ths stage of doing some of the final shaping on my cherry mannlicher stock. I've had to rein myself in and go slow. That's the hard part, cause I want to go FAST when I see the shape taking form! Hang in there and Please post pics along the way. LC
  4. HF, Enjoy the hunt! Wish you a bunch of success. I wish that we had the quail here in the upper south like it was when my dad was my age. MM MM Good eatin! Remember the pics!! LC
  5. Fritz said: Well, I have had my share of the crooks involved with this fiasco. I am ready for ONE single elected politician to stand up for what this country wants, and not just what they want. I may have to wait awhile. And I am not getting any younger. I turned 40 this year. I'm very disappointed. Your statement really cuts to the quick. I believe that the parties have gone the way of the soundbite and Polling. Neither party has a core belief beyond reelection. Until someone in A party, be it Dem, Rep, Constitution, Independent (exlcuding Nader) steps up to the plate with a vision of America we will probably stay in this rut. littlecanoe (spinning in the current)
  6. AZ, It's nice to finally see someone who is easy to buy Christmas presents for ;-) LC
  7. A large Trans-Modal park is being talked about for the Bowling Green, KY area. I'm wondering if this is part of the bigger picture too. Let Canada and Mejico STAY where they are and let America be America! Seems like W is maybe like Dad was. Not conservative but a Moderate!
  8. I know that this subject has been discussed here in the past. I ran across this and thought that it made very interesting reading. My Webpage LC
  9. Thanks Sonic1, I've read that the Pilkingtons is harder to get even for the first 2 coats. Is this consistent with your findings? LC
  10. Would the Brownells method be superior to Pilkingtons? Would it be easier or harder to apply and would it give a better or worse finish? Or differ in color of bluing? I ask because I have a few projects and don't know which direction to take. LC
  11. I have made progress on the Mannlicher but will be slowed down due to deer season and making the butt plate and pistol grip. I've decided to put a walnut tip on the end and on the grip cap. I may back out on the grip cap though. I've set the pitch and cast off for the stock from the grip back. I have a good line on the toe out also. LC
  12. Dr. Hess, you said it well sir! I turned 18 in time for the 1984 election and was proud to pull the lever for Ronald Reagan. I remember thinking that the "becoming more and more liberal" Democratic party was so entrenched in the House and Senate that they would never lose power; the best we could hope for was to keep the Presidency. The chain of events that followed and lead to the 12 years of power that the Republicans enjoyed gave me hope. The House, the Senate and the Presidency. There was hope that things would change. There was hope that we would see the vision that Newt Gingrich had laid out i.e., shrink government and governments influence in our lives, begin to take meaningful form in our lives Look where we are now. The Republocrats have moved away from any true conservative stance and are now feeding us PR fluff. Why? To keep the masses of the party convinced that they must vote for the party because they have to consider the option. The democrats. Their purpose? To stay in power so that the "Bad" guys won't be able to ruin our lives. It's laughable. It reminds me of the saying that hate will cause you to become the very thing that you throw your energy at. Hence, the republicans have truely become republocrats. What's the answer and when will the country say enough? If it's not time now when will the time be right? I wonder how our founding fathers felt when they made these tough decisions. Does anyone in present day America have the willingness to change this mess? I have been registered as a Republican ever since 1984. That will change. But again. I'm from the middle of the country. I'm a hick and can't know what right and wrong are. I'm not on either coast! LC
  13. As a follow-up post I have a few questions about traditional Mannlicher style and am hoping that you guys can bail me out. I have saved pics of other rifles to review for stock style and features but that leaves me a bit short. This rifle will be top feed with only a trigger guard below. The grip cap and butt plate will be skeletonized. I'm not yet sure about all of the hardware but it will likely have traditional sling attachments. My questions concern how thick the wood should be left in a few places. 1. How thick is a traditional stock below the tip of the muzzle? 2. In a blind magazine is it traditional to make it 3 or 5 deep (Carl Gustav action 6.5x55)? 3. How much wood is left in the bottom of the Mag well in a blind magazine? 4. Does the follower and spring just float off the wood at the bottom of the Mag Well? I'll stop the Q's there. I'll likely need to ask more later. LC
  14. I just wanted to post pics of progress that I am making on a Mannlicher project. I had posted back in the summer asking about inletting tools for the barrel channel and was stressing over what to do. I ended up ordering the Jerry Fischer scrapers and have used those, 4 straight chisels and some small wood carving chisels that I modified. I initially had the barrel channel a bit too far to the left which required deeper inletting to correct. This however turned out to be a very good thing as it forced me to think the process through based on all that I've read the mistakes that I made on other projects. I wasn't sure but thought that the deeper inletting would allow me to erase my mistakes that had left gaps along the way, worst on the left side of the barrel. This evening I went to my dad's shop to use his Joiner. The inletting was too wide in a few places and I wasn't sure how clean it would be when I removed the excess height of wood. I was amazed to say the least as my expectations were way too low. The pics say most of it. I'm happy! Here are two pics of the action. The black that shows is the inletting black and not a gap. This is a shot of the blank with the metal in place.
  15. Monte, Thanks for the info. I am getting over my fear of doing projects like this and in good time. I have one in progress where I plan on the skeleton grip cap and skeleton butt plate. It's helps to see your photo's and do's and don't's. It takes some of the questioning away.
  16. Very nice. What piece of advice would you give to someone who plans to do such a grip but has never done one? LC
  17. Racepres, I've looked at this site and gotten some ideas from it. Not sure if it's just what you are looking for but hope it helps. Scroll to the bottom and you'll find a lot of topics. LC http://riflestocks.tripod.com/
  18. Tommyboy, Great shooter! With results like that you obviously like ER Shaw. Is this your first Shaw Barrel? Any problem with quick fouling or does the barrel stay pretty clean?
  19. Well gentlemen, I am hard headed, but not enough so that I won't take the advice of people who have been there and done that!! The guy countered my 50$ with 60$ but I could buy a bit of powder and bullets for that and work on my marksmanship. A big thanks for the information!!! LC
  20. I drove by the shop today and the guy was open. I was wrong about the rifle? It says "La Caruna??" and 1946. The bolt has 3 lugs and the guy says that it is 8mm. I don't know what it is.
  21. HF, I checked the serial # on Ruger's site. Mine is a '92 build. I hope to run a lot of round through this thing. I was out with my youngest daughter before dark popping 12 ga hulls. It would be nice to have the $$ to slick one of these up with a scope or red dot! and all the aftermarket trigger stuff and springs......... Too many centerfire projects going though. LC
  22. Gentlemen, Thanks for the replies. I'll have to look it over a little more carefully after labor day. I do believe that it is a 1916. I'll have to check lugs and the date on the crest. It does look to still have the original military barrel which was cut down. The only reason that this one crossed my mind is that it is still there and the price might be very negotiable. LC BTW. Very handy carbine Fritz!! Looking good!
  23. I know that the Spanish Mauser is a controversial subject. However, I have had one tempting me for about a year. Everytime I go by a certain pawn shop it's still there. It's been "customized" in a poor manner. Mannlicher with a rough butterknife type handle with a poor job on the military stock. However, I keep asking myself if it's worth bargaining for. I'm thinking that the action and bolt could be slicked up and re-heat-treated if the price was right for the rifle. Would this cure the ills of a Spanish mauser or would it still be a big ?? ? What do you guys say?
  24. RR, I can sure understand why you would be a little leary after an experience like that. Hope it didn't do damage to you. Makes you wonder how many Japanese were killed or maimed by their own sidearm. I've always been reminded of the German Luger when I look at the Mark II's. Especially if it has a tapered barrel. It is a fun little pistol. It's a natural pointer for me. LC
  25. z1r I'm just starting to think more about the whole process. Where I want to go with these rifles. I'm not into the 2000$ top of the line everything builds but would consider a few more $ invested if the results were a little better than what I've done up to now. I don't like to get rid of things so any rifle that I build will likely stay in the safe and be passed on. Hasn't there been a group re-treating before?
