I believe that the are called "Grinners" too. That 1st pic really shows that off. A friend tells a very funny story about killing one. Not long after he and his wife were married he had to borrow a car from his new F-I-L. It just happened to be a fairly new Cadillac. Their garbage can was being robbed at night so he was determined to stop the messing. Late one evening he hears a noise, peeks out the front door and sees a grinner on the garbage can. He got his wife to hand him the shotgun, eased it through the front door and BAM! Problem solved and trash can robber dispatched. The next morning when he got up to go to work, he noticed some greasy stuff splattered down the side of the Cadillac. OH! Memory light came on above his head. He had splattered Mr. Grinner down the side of his FIL's Caddy! I guess the grinner got the last laugh so to speak. It seems that the greasy fat from a possum is hard to get off the paint on a new Cadillac.

Looks good. Now you have an excuse....Err......Reason......to buy new tools. The way a lot of the furniture that is shipped in from china is being made, you'll justify buying the tools and taking time to make good furniture. It will last a lot longer. It's surprising how much of the imported stuff is particle board with a laminate that is not always wood over the top. Hat's off to you for tackling this project. Wood is GREAT! Love it.

I was looking through a picture album tonight and came across this photo. Hope you won't mind a proud father posting a pic It was made in early July of 06. The little stockmaker was 21 months old at the time. He's going on 4years now. This was the inletting of the top metal. As you can see, the blank was Gynormus!

Thanks dj, I'm thinking of your double-set triggers for this one, down the road. Don, I've since trimmed a little more on the grip. I'll try to post a few more pics in a few days to show all the refinements better. I'll open the grip up a bit on the next one.

This is the most exciting thing that has happened in the GOP in a few years. From the sounds of it she is a female Ronald Regan. I don't know that much about her yet, but the things that I see I like. Even at her worst, she still gotta be quite a few steps above Biden. NObama can't even be on the same ladder.

Well, Somebody hand me my sign!!!! DUH!! After I thought about things a bit, I remembered that I have a wire that is adapted to plug into the fuse box underneath the dash. "Did somebody accidentally pull that out?" I thought. Yep! After I plugged it back up my little brake light on the controller comes on every time that I hit the brakes. I tested it today and I have trailer brakes! I didn't hook the ground on the trailer back up. I decided to leave it off since everything is working so well. I am grounded at the Female plug by the hitch and the controller box is grounded. Does this part make any sense?? that the trailer then doesn't need a ground also? I'm assuming that it is grounded through the rest of the system. Thanks for all the help and suggestions. It's really nice to have you guys to come to when something like this comes up.....a lot of experience out there. lc

I was inspired to have at it again a few days ago and made some nice progress on the forearm and transition area. The wrist is still a bit fat and I'll have to work it over. I worked the nose cap down to fit the barrel, which is a bit large for a Mannlicher style. However, it turned out better than I thought it would. The schnabble may be a bit large, I haven't made up my mind about it yet. I just wanted to say thanks for the encouragement that you guys gave to keep on whittling. Making this stock has really taught me a lot. Here is a quick update pic:

This question isn't a statement, more of a curiosity. I haven't seen the session that you guys did. Having seen McCain speak, does it make you wish that he had already been president?

Forgot to add that the lights all work normally. I'm still reading all the posts.......................LOL Edited to add: The wiring all checks out. As you guessed Jerry, it's an older one and didn't come with the plug and go set-up. I've run the wiring a few times. I test out getting 11ish volts on the appropriate tab on the female connector on the bumper. 2nd edit: Monte, I had the weird reverse trailer brake lock up going on too! This controller is a Hayes Lemmerz. It's basic with just the power reostat to set brake power and the "Oh NO!" lever. Should all grounds be hooked up? The box, the female bumper connector and the brake lines to the trailer?

Last fall I bought a 16 foot utility trailer. It has 2 axles with each axle being set up with brakes. It has the break-away switch on the front that locks the brakes if the trailer gets loose. I've set my 99 slowburban up with a brake controller. My b-i-l has a brake controller on his 2001 1500. We both get the same symptoms when we hook this trailer up to our trucks. The brakes lock up sometimes but it's hit or miss. The manual lever on the box won't even lock them up with any consistency. Everyone that I've talked to so far has said that it sounds like a ground issue. I'm not sharp when it comes to electrical circuits. I've just never learned that much about it. I've grounded the controller box. After that, I grounded the plug box to the chassy. This still didn't work and made wonder if there was to many points grounded. Last night, I went to pull the trailer back to town and decided to check the ground on the trailer. I removed the bolt that was holding it to the trailer frame. I cleaned the metal under the washer and connection. After I hooked everything back up, I drove about 2 miles and the symptoms were the same. I pulled off at a country store and decided to unattach the trailer ground that I had just worked on. After that, the brakes on the trailer locked beautifully when I hit the manual brake lever. The light on the control box came on strong and the brakes locked harder and harder as I increased the pull on the lever. When I hit the brake pedal I don't have a light coming on and the box doesn't seem to be enguaging the trailer brakes. Any ideas on what I've got going on here or if I need to change the ground connections? lc

Karl, I found these to vids on Youtube and thought of your 200yd shooting with the .22. Interestingly, number 2 of this vid show up in the scroll window while I was watching a video of a taurus 357Mag barrel blow off while being shot. That was pretty interesting. Anyway, this fella is shooting a .22, CZ, and hits a sillouette (sp?) a few times. Pretty neat Looks like a bunch of fun. lc

This fella and 2 of his brothers do a lot of construction together. They were out roofing on Monday, which was a very hot day here. After eating lunch, since they were close to the lake, they decided to go down and swim to cool off. The boat ramp that they went to is remote and not always that busy. It faces an old road bed that ends where an old bridge was taken down. They decided to swim across to the old road bed which is probably 150yds away. On the way back, Josh yelled out and his brothers looked back to see him going under. They tried to find him but couldn't. I don't know if they were racing or not but from the sounds of everything, Josh got cramped up.

Well, the body was found around 1 CST today. He was about 50 feet from where he went down. Please continue to lift this family up. lc

It's been a heavy, heavy evening. We just got back from the search site. They are running a sonar equipped boat and trying to pinpoint where he is. It's pretty murky and the divers were fatigued and will have to come back in the AM to dive after some rest. If you only knew this young man. He's the kinda guy you'd look at and say "If I have a son, I'd like him to be like Josh". Not a mean bone in his body, always courteous, always smiling and a nice mischievous twinkle in his eye. Just a really good kid. These things just make you look at your own and thank God that, at this moment, they are here with you and healthy. Beyond that, the numbness that you feel keep words at bay. Thanks for your prayers. This family is the kind of family that makes America, or for that matter, any other place, a better place to live. They are Mayberry through and through.

Anyone remember the "Mr. Fusion" that was on the back of the Delorian in "Back to the Future". Just throw in a banana peel and voila! Energy. Wouldn't that be great.

I have a little Savage 22 with target barrel and accutrigger. It likes Wolf Target and Remington SubSonic about equally well. Both will group 5-10 shots in a dime size ragged hole at 50 yds off a bag. The Wolf groups on the small side of the time the Remington on the large side of the dime. Both are great in that little rifle. I can't really attest to the 100yd or greater range as I haven't played around with that yet. I would think, though, that if I did my part they would hold up. I believe that either is worth a try as they are both subsonic. The Remington's were a good bit cheaper. I think about half of what I paid for the Wolf. That may not hold true now though. I don't remember the bullet weight on them but think that it was in the 40 gr range.

Monte, I sealed the end grain with paint. Then I air dried for a short time and then Kiln dried slowly. I cut the blank to a more generous 3 inch thickness. I should have air dried longer to avoid some warping that occurred in the blank. As the blank was thick I was able to use table saw, joiner and planer (My dad is a furniture builder and has large wood working equipment). This straightened the blank nicely and I've not had any further warp issues since making the stock. I'd recommend the standard 1 year per inch to dry the blanks and then do a slow kiln dry of some sort. You have to be picky there because different species of wood need to be dried at different rates. Sometimes trees will suffer from wind shake. This is where the tree is exposed to a lot of wind and there is separation of the grain vertically. This usually seems to happen between growth rings. This will sometimes only show up after drying as some serious checking of the grain. The problem that I have is having the patience to let the stuff dry! Edited: Forgot to add. When air drying it's best to make sure that the wood is in a dark place away from the sun. This allows it to dry at a slower rate.

How true. I've become aware of the same thing lately after posting on a couple non-gun related boards. Little to no response. It made me think that those boards might be populated with people who don't know or just don't care as much about Mayberry. Gun owners may just have a deeper Mayberry bond. Then again, we all may have a big bunch of redneck country-boy running through us. lc
