  1. We definitely need an Israeli type personal firearms policy. It works. DT. Maybe they wouldn't convert? Obama/Simson 2008
  2. How many inches of the end of the stock are warped? Can the stock be shortened to remove the warped area and still be functional and asthetic? lc
  3. Don't wanna hijack the thread, but hill is in a tough spot. If she cuts Obama's legs from under him she's a hippocrit. There may be riots, but the dem party just might be set to splinter. If he wins the delegate count and the supers override the regular delegates WOW. Duck!
  4. A third great awakening would be awesome! A less desirable thing would be a 3rd revolution. I don't think that people care about freedom that much. The frog is in the pot and the water is very warm............
  5. FC, All good points. I think that the answer is possibly in public awareness. You're point of where the NRA focuses is well made. No matter how many laws we make on either side and no matter how many politicians vote the right way we still have a problem. Public Perception. Public perception is the enemy because of political pandering. How many of hour trusted officials will stand by principle if it means losing the vote and losing power. Many, hopefully not most, would scuttle the 2nd amendment in a heart beat. Maybe it's time for the NRA and some of the other organizations start to educate the masses. Billboards, TV and Radio ads. It won't win them all but it might win a majority. Beyond that, I can't think of another catalyst except a total breakdown of our way of life to the point that arms are necessary for survival. lc
  6. I can see a nice turkey gun coming out of that. Can't wait to see the finished product.
  7. Thanks for sharing that AZ. I wish that we had some remote areas to get out to here in the south east. Looks like you guys had a ball. Hope all goes well with the next treatments.
  8. Thanks for the link. I remember seeing that posted but hadn't read through it. I'm at the point of needing to make a decision on forend cap also. I found one listed at .610 inches in Midway but I need something along the lines of .687. What would you suggest for sling swivels? Great info guys!
  9. Z, THanks for posting those pics. Very nice example. Great example of the wrist in that one shot. I've taken you guys advice and started deepening the inletting. It's coming around now! I'm thinking of going without a metal band on the front of the stock. Mainly due to the fact that the Barrel is so fat after being a cut down military profile. I'd probably have to fab something to get the right diameter. Can you tell me a bit more about fabbing a new banded sight that is lower profile? I really like the look of the one on your mannlicher. Dirty Jim, I get what you're saying about the line from the box forward. I think that I have enough meat left to accomplish that. If I can get the inletting finished over the next few days I'll post a few more pictures.
  10. Straight taper from mag well to muzzle? This barrel is a little fat compared to the standard mannlicher barrel. That'll limit me a bit.
  11. Well, it'll be back to inletting! It looks to only need a 1/16" or maybe 3/32". I've thought about replacing the rear sight with a more stream lined model. Also, thought about using a sight mounted on the cocking piece. I've seen this on the 98's but is there something out there for a reasonable price that will work on a 96? The blind mag was an attempt to keep weight down. Right now I can get four almost 5 in it but don't care if I can only keep 3 down since the goal is to be streamline. What about the front of the Comb?
  12. Thanks weaver77, I forgot to mention that it's a blind magazine and will hold 4 down at present. I have also tapered the tang and am afraid of taking too much away and making it look really weird.
  13. For some reason I'm messing the pics up. I'm posting from Hunt101.com. This hasn't been a problem in the past. Any ideas? Fixed the problem by using PictureTrail.com
  14. Here are some pics of some recent progress on a Mannlicker that I've been working on. The action is a Carl Gustav that was shortened to 20". This left the barrel a little stubbier and heavier than a standard Mannlicker sporter taper but should help to keep the rifle with a nice shootable feel. I will point out a few problems and how I plan on tackling them. I really am looking for insight and critique. I keep making the lines more petite and am nervous each time I do so. But so far, I'm happy with how the lines are shaping up. However, I'm not sure if it's where it needs to end up just yet. Anyhow, here goes: Side view of off side. Due to shadows you can't see the cheek rest well. Bolt Handle Side. Can see the lines of the stock and wrist. I like a more upright wrist so there won't be such a traditional line there. How about the wood beneath the blind Magazine and the lines from there to the tip of the stock? Next is a view from the Butt. Notice Cast off that is built in. I have some toe out also and it really helps in shouldering this rifle. Comes to the eye nicely. There is a weird shadow on the comb so it looks a bit off. Here is a view from the muzzle end. How does the thickness of the wood along the channel look to you? Too thick still? I've taken a good bit off by now and I'm just not sure about it. Here is a point that I messed up on. Somehow I have the rear tang too high. I don't remember now how I did it as I've been on and off at this project for a year or more. I'm thinking of inletting more if you guys don't have a good idea to correct this. Thanks for looking and I really do want some constructive feedback on form.
  15. Don, I'm thinking that this feature would be nice for those customs that I'm considering. I like the bolt locking since I've had trouble with the bolt lifting when hunting in tighter cover. Thanks for the insight fellas!
  16. (I care not a mans religon as long as it's not a violent religon.Jerry) Good point. I'm not a Romney supporter by any means. I am not Mormon's and don't agree with their doctrines. However, when I consider the "Christian" example that Bill Clinton left us after 8 years and remember all the photo op's taken at churches I realize that I'd have no problem pulling the lever for a Mormon. Election lever not Ol'Sparky's lever LOL. Doctrine aside, I like that Mormon's have strong family values and ascribe to good moral values as a whole.
  17. Are most of the aftermarket safety's in this style 2 position? Is it a fire/bolt open or safe/bolt locked setup? lc aka IZH27
  18. I just re-read the posts on this thread. It's really depressing to me to look at the choices on both sides. I'm beating the same drum but where is a "Reaganesque" man of character these days? Is this really what the Republican party has become since Newt was scuttled?
  19. I really enjoyed the story and the pics Z. Glad the hunt was successful. Been looking forward to your return write up since you found your long johns!
  20. Horsefly, Can you post a picture? Some of the old Craftsman tools like yours sounds to be were high quality. Not sure where made but likely US. My dad has worked building Early American Reproductions since I was about 3 or 4yo. I'm 41 now. He does lathe work like a machine. It's quite a skill. Without looking I'd say you have a very nice lathe if it's that older post WWII vintage or earlier. Edited: Here is a link to a site that is for woodworking and has a Lathe forum. A friend of mine is on this site a lot and likes it. You should find some useful info there and maybe some help in ID'ing your lathe. Hope it helps. Sawmill Creek
  21. Very nice! Every time I see a self made like this.....WOW. One day...............
  22. I can't tell who the adult in the background is. Can you imagine how it'd stink up the house when you started cooking that thing? Worse than Hog Jowl!! LOL
  23. The first one must be a form of population control where only the smartest get to reproduce!! lol

    Tight!

rustvyper, Don't know if you've removed the barrel yet and missed if anyone gave this hint. My first removal was a Vz24. I took some playdo and rolled it into a small ball and plugged the chamber. After that I placed the barrel muzzle down and secured the rifle in that position. Then Applied penetrating oil and let it set at least overnight. When I removed the barrel the threads were moist/damp. Still had to add a little persuasion but it wasn't all that bad.
  25. Very true. I've thought of putting the 2nd 7x57 barrel on the Columbian action if I don't get it to pan out in '06. I've also thought of a 35 Whelan barrel on it. What grain bullet did you find that your Columbian likes?
